13 Getting Started 1: Installing the speakers This receiver allows you to use a 5.1 channel speaker system. To fully enjoy theater-like multi channel surround sound, be sure to connect all the speakers (two front speakers, a center speaker, and two surround speakers) and a subwoofer (5.1 channel). You can place your speakers as shown below. AFront speaker (left) BFront speaker (right) CCenter speaker DSurround speaker (left) ESurround speaker (right) FSubwoofer Installing the speakers on a flat surface Before you install the speaker and subwoofer, be sure to attach the supplied foot pads to prevent vibration or movement as shown in the illustration below. Example of front speaker Getting Started Installing the speakers on the speaker stand For greater flexibility in positioning the speakers, use the optional WS-FV11 or WS-FV10D speaker stand (available only in certain countries). For details, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the speaker stand. Tip Since the subwoofer does not emit highly directional signals, you can place it wherever you want. 13 US

14 Installing the speakers on the wall You can install your speakers on the wall. 1 Prepare screws (not supplied) that are suitable for the hook on the back of each speaker. See the illustrations below. 3 Hang the speakers on the screws. 4.6 mm (3/16 inch) 10 mm (13/32 inch) 4 mm (3/16 inch) more than 25 mm (more than 1 inch) 4.6 mm (3/16 inch) 10 mm (13/32 inch) Hook on the back of the speaker 2 Fasten the screws to the wall. The screws should protrude 7/32 to 9/32 inch. For the center speaker 160 mm (6 5/16 inches) Rear of speaker Notes Use screws that are suitable for the wall material and strength. As a plaster board wall is especially fragile, attach the screws securely to a beam and fasten them to the wall. Install the speakers on a vertical and flat wall where reinforcement is applied. Contact a screw shop or installer regarding the wall material or screws to be used. Sony is not responsible for accident or damage caused by improper installation, insufficient wall strength or improper screw installation, natural calamity, etc. 5 mm to 7 mm (7/32 to 9/32 inch) For the front speakers and surround speakers 5 mm to 7 mm (7/32 to 9/32 inch) 14 US

To detach the DIGITAL MEDIA PORT adapter, press and holed both sided of the connector and then pull out the connector. 2 1 DC5V 700mA MAX DMPORT 1 Connecting components with HDMI jacks HDMI is the abbreviated name for High- Definition Multimedia Interface. It is an interface which transmits video and audio signals in digital format. Sony recommends that you connect components to the receiver using an HDMI cable. With HDMI, you can easily enjoy both high quality sound and high quality images. However, it is necessary to connect the audio output of the TV to the audio input of the receiver using an optical cord to listen to the TV multi channel surround sound broadcasting from the receiver. By connecting Sony BRAVIA Sync compatible components using HDMI cables, BRAVIA Sync Features makes operations simpler (page 41). HDMI features A digital audio signals transmitted by HDMI can be output from the speakers connected to the receiver. This signal supports Dolby Digital, DTS and Linear PCM. This receiver supports xvycc transmission. This receiver supports the Control for HDMI function. For details, see Using BRAVIA Sync features (page 41). 18 US

It is not output from any other audio jacks. Video signals input to the HDMI IN jack can only be output from the HDMI OUT jack. The multi/stereo area audio signals of a Super Audio CD are not output. Audio signals (sampling frequency, bit length, etc.) transmitted from an HDMI jack may be suppressed by the connected component. Check the setup of the connected component if the image is poor or the sound does not come out of a component connected via the HDMI cable. Sound may be interrupted when the sampling frequency, the number of channels or the audio format of the audio output signals from the playback component is switched. When the connected component is not compatible with copyright protection technology (HDCP), the image and/or the sound from the HDMI OUT jack may be distorted or may not be output. In this case, check the specification of the connected component. You can enjoy multi channel Linear PCM only with an HDMI connection. Set the image resolution of the playback component to 720p, 1080i or 1080p when you output 96 khz multi channel sound over an HDMI connection. You may need to make certain settings on the image resolution of the player before you can enjoy multi channel Linear PCM. Refer to the operating instructions of the player. Refer to the operating instructions of each component connected for details. We do not recommend using an HDMI-DVI conversion cable. When you connect an HDMI-DVI conversion cable to a DVI-D component, the sound and/or the image may not be output. Getting Started 19 US

22 Inserting batteries into the remote Insert two R6 (size-aa) batteries in the RM-AAU057 Remote Commander. Observe the correct polarity when installing batteries. Notes Do not leave the remote in an extremely hot or humid place. Do not use a new battery with old ones. Do not mix manganese batteries and other kinds of batteries. Do not expose the remote sensor to direct sunlight or lighting apparatuses. Doing so may cause a malfunction. If you do not intend to use the remote for an extended period of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage and corrosion. When you replace the batteries, the remote buttons may be reset to their factory settings. If this happens, reassign the buttons again (page 48). When the remote no longer operates the receiver, replace all the batteries with new ones. 7: Calibrating the appropriate settings automatically (AUTO CALIBRATION) This receiver is equipped with DCAC (Digital Cinema Auto Calibration) Technology which allows you to perform automatic calibration as follows: Check the connection between each speaker and the receiver. Adjust the speaker level. Measure the distance of each speaker from your listening position. Measure the frequency characteristics.* * The measurement result is not utilized for signals with a sampling frequency of more than 96 khz. The DCAC is designed to obtain proper sound balance in your room. However, you can adjust the speaker levels manually according to your preference. For details, see 8: Adjusting the speaker levels (TEST TONE) (page 26). 22 US

During the calibration, the sound that comes out of the speakers is very loud. The volume of the sound cannot be adjusted. Pay attention to the presence of children or to the effect on your neighborhood. Perform the Auto Calibration in a quiet environment to avoid the effect of noise and to get a more accurate measurement. If there are any obstacles in the path between the optimizer microphone and the speakers, the calibration cannot be performed correctly. Remove any obstacles from the measurement area to avoid measurement error.
