2 Trademark Information ADC is a registered trademark of ADC Telecommunications, Inc. Related Publications Listed below are related manuals and their publication numbers. Copies of these publications can be ordered by contacting the ADC Technical Assistance Center at (in U.S.A. or Canada) or , extension 7347 (outside U.S.A. and Canada). Title/Description ADC ptical Return Loss (RL) Testing ADCP Number ADCP Admonishments Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings, and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or damage and likelihood of occurrence. Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided. Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided. General Safety Precautions Caution: Fiber optic cables may be damaged if bent or curved to a radius that is less than the recommended minimum bend radius. Always observe the recommended bend radius limit when installing fiber optic cables and patch cords. Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end. Caution: Improper handling can damage fiber optic cables. Do not bend fiber optic cable more sharply than the minimum recommended bend radius specified by the cable manufacturer. Do not apply more pulling force to the cable than specified. Do not compress the fiber or allow it to kink. Page
3 Warning: Invisible infrared radiation can seriously damage the retina of your eye. Do not look into the launching (output) end of an active fiber. A clean, protective cap or hood MUST be immediately placed over any radiating bulkhead receptacle or optical connector to avoid exposure to potentially dangerous amounts of radiation. This practice also helps to prevent contamination of connectors and adapters. LIST F ACRNYMS AND ABBREVIINS The acronyms and abbreviations used in this manual are detailed in the following list: C FDF DN LT NT SP TDR PN RX SMFC SMLC SMSC SRC TX Access Terminal Central ffice Fiber Distribution Frame Fiber Distribution Hub/Terminal ptical Distribution Network ptical Line Termination ptical Network Termination utside Plant ptical Time Domain Reflectometer Passive ptical Network Radio Frequency Receive SingleMode FC SingleMode LC SingleMode SC Source Transmit Value Added Module Wave Division Multiplexer Page 3
4 GENERAL INFRMIN Failure to adequately test to an acceptable level at the time of installation will result in customer dissatisfaction. To achieve adequate testing requires careful consideration and planning. It is possible to achieve adequate testing at a reasonable price, however poor planning will result in inadequate testing with a higher initial cost. A PN network is a Point to Multipoint architecture servicing a number of customers. Testing is more complex than in traditional Point to Point because a given customer s circuit is composed of both shared and dedicated fiber. Indeed, the increased test complexity, combined with increased cost constraints, means that testing needs to be very carefully evaluated and implemented. PN networks use passive splitters to distribute fiber to individual homes or businesses. ne fiber is optically split into 6, 3, 64, or more fibers, which are then distributed to residential or business subscribers. The switching and routing is done at the carrier's central office. nce on the customer's premises, the fiber connects to a Network Interface Device (NID), called variously an ptical Network Termination (NT) or an ptical Network Unit (NU). This device converts the optical signal into a format that can be used directly by the customer.. 5 This document provides general guidelines for the Test and Turn Up Procedures for a PN Network. It is assumed that the correct placement and construction of all cabinets and terminals has been completed and verified. A typical network is shown in Figure. Danger: Exposure to laser radiation can seriously damage the retina of the eye. Do not look into the ends of any optical fiber. Do not assume the laser power is turned-off or that the fiber is disconnected at the other end.
