GIA Alumni Association Identity Program Logo and Graphic Usage Guidelines
GIA Alumni Association Identity Program GIA provides logos and graphics for use by its alumni chapters, chapter officers, and members. Given that each chapter has its own locale, personality, and culture, we want you to have the flexibility to manage your chapter in a way that reflects your membership. Even so, there are guidelines that all chapters should follow to protect its members and GIA. GIA s Identity Program is a precise set of standards by which the value of our identity is promoted, protected, and maintained. By following these guidelines, we can build on the Institute s existing equity and preserve the power of our identity and our mission for many years to come. GIA Alumni Association World Headquarters The Robert Mouawad Campus 5345 Armada Drive Carlsbad, California , ext alumni@gia.edu Use of GIA Alumni trademarks, as well as any other reference to GIA or its marks, must comply with terms of use and copyrights and trademarks usage described on the GIA website, in addition to the guidelines herein. GIA reserves the right to change or amend the guidelines as needed Gemological Institute of America, Inc. All rights reserved.

GIA Alumni Association General Logo Who may use the GIA Alumni Association gener al logo? The GIA Alumni Association general logo is available for use by any individual who is a current member of the GIA Alumni Association. A current member must have taken a GIA course and received a passing grade on the final exam. The logo is not available for use by individuals who do not meet this qualification. How do I obtain the GIA Alumni Association gener al logo? The GIA Alumni Association general logo is available to download through the My Alumni community on My GIA at my.gia.edu (username and password is required). Where can the GIA Alumni Association gener al logo be used? Current members may use the GIA Alumni Association general logo on newsletters, print materials, web pages, websites, and other communications. For usage in any other medium, approval must be obtained from the GIA Alumni Relations manager and GIA Marketing department. Depending on usage, special file types may need to be provided by GIA for best results GIA
GIA Alumni Association Chapter-Specific Logos Who may use a GIA Alumni Association chapter-specific logo? Chapter officers will use the appropriate chapter logo for business and activities that support the identity, development, and growth of the chapter. The chapter-specific logo is the preferred identity for each alumni chapter. How do I obtain my chapter-specific logo? GIA will provide an official logo to chapter officers for each chapter as it forms. Below is the preferred logo that identifies an official chapter of the GIA Alumni Association. The chapter logo uses the general logo and adds chapter identity to it. A horizontal line and chapter name are added underneath. Where can the GIA Alumni association chapter-specific logos be used? Chapter officers may use the GIA Alumni Association chapter-specific logo only on items officially associated to that chapter and created by chapter officers, including: stationery, newsletters, print materials, web materials, web pages, and other communications. For usage in any other medium, approval must be obtained from the GIA Alumni Relations manager and GIA Marketing department. Depending on usage, special file types may need to be provided by GIA for best results GIA
Gr aphic files 1. All elements in each logo are locked up into one graphic file. Monogram GIA Registration mark Alumni sub-brand Alumni Association (chapter-specific logo only) Horizontal line and chapter name (chapter-specific logo only) 2. Elements in the file will resize proportionately. 3. Individual elements are not to be used separately. 4. Logo designs are not to be altered. Logos are available in four- and two-color versions in JPG, PNG, and EPS formats. JPG file formats are most often for on-screen and web use when the logo is already on a white or opaque background. This is a flattened file that cannot be changed. PNG file formats are used for web where a color (e.g. gold) is placed against another background. PNG files allow users to change their own background for on-screen and web use. EPS file formats are most often used for print. EPS files can also be placed into Word documents. For stationery, an EPS file will maintain its resolution. Depending on your usage, you may need to request a specific file type GIA
Business Cards for Chapter Officers Chapter officers may have GIA Alumni Association business cards to promote their chapter and the Alumni Association. Note that only the GIA Alumni Association general logo may be used on the business card. Below is an example of the suggested layout and recommended wording. PMS 873 Robert Jeweler, G.G. Mumbai Chapter President Any Street Anytown, USA PMS 404 To protect both the officer using the cards and GIA, the disclaimer must be included. GIA appreciates the considerable time and effort devoted to the Alumni Association by chapter representatives. The Institute, however is not a sponsor, promoter, or affiliate of the party represented on this business card, other than the school/alumnus relationship. Required Disclaimer GIA Alumni Association official colors are PMS 873 and PMS 404. The 4-color mixes for these colors are: PMS 873= C:10 M:40 Y:70 K:25 PMS 404= C:0 M:8.5 Y:23.5 K:56 Approved typeface and fonts are Helvetica, Univers, Arial, and Futura. Your printer and designer will want to know this information. The business card graphic template can be obtained by contacting an Alumni Association staff member GIA
COLOR There are three variations for each of the general and chapter-specific Alumni Association logos, each differentiated by use of color. Full color signature Black and PMS 873 metallic gold (for print) 4-color process gold equivalent: C:10, M:40, Y:70, K:25 RGB equivalent: R:178, G:128, B:78 GIA gold for web: (A browser-safe choice that best represents GIA gold online.) one-color logo Logo used in all black. When colors available fall outside of the GIA palette, the entire logo may be in one color of your choice. Logo can be printed over a photo or a non-solid background. reverse/white signature Logo is white, used on a solid, contrasting background GIA
Consistency Electronic art is provided and may not be adjusted. The following are consistency don ts: Do not reposition the elements of the logo in any way. Do not reproportion, take apart or otherwise alter the logo. Do not rotate the logo in any way. Do not box reverse any part of the logo and keep other elements as designed GIA
Consistency (continued) The following are consistency don ts: Do not imply that GIA and/or its subsidiaries directly or indirectly certify, sponsor, or approve any individual or private business including its employees, products, services, or prices. supports ABC Jewelry Do not suggest that GIA participates in, or endorses, private business. GIA must also avoid the appearance of doing so, or its standing as an educational and research institution with regulating and accrediting authorities could be jeopardized. ABC Jewelry in partnership with Do not create the false appearance that you or any non-gia entity or any non-gia product or service is associated with, or endorsed, or sponsored by GIA through the appearance, position and other aspects of the logo. ABC Jewelry sponsored by Do not misrepresent your relationship with GIA, or present false or misleading impressions about GIA or its services through the appearance, position, and other aspects of the logo. Robert Jeweler, President and member GIA
Clarity For GIA Alumni Association logos to be recognized and retain their strength, they need to be clearly visible and set apart from competing imagery. Clear zones A clear zone is the amount of space required to surround the edge of a logo. This separates the logo from other design elements and allows the logo to breathe. It is always relative to the size of the logo and is equal to half the height of the monogram. Using the logo on a photograph or over A non-solid background Using a logo on a photograph or other image requires an area within which the logo has room to breathe and maintains sufficient contrast from the image. It is difficult to place a logo on a high-contrast image. Maintain legibility by choosing the area of least complexity. For maximum recognition, there must be at least 50% contrast GIA
Clarity (continued) The following are clarity don ts: Do not crop the logo in any way. Do not stretch or distort the logo in any manner. Do not screen all or part of the logo or apply a low-contrasting background. Do not create patterns from all or part of the logo. Patterns dilute the logo s importance and decrease readability GIA
The time is now. The place is all over the world. There s never been a better time to connect with gem and jewelry professionals across the globe. The GIA Alumni staff is available to answer any questions regarding the implementation of your chapter identity outlined in this brochure. Alumni logos may only be reproduced from master digital artwork available through GIA Alumni staff or My Alumni on the GIA portal. Sign on with your user name and password at my.gia.edu to download.
