1 Studio DMX Decoders West Bernardo Court, Suite 102 San Diego, CA Fax: EnvironmentalLights.com Part numbers: DMX , DMX , DMX Environmental Lights introduces the new and improved 4-channel decoder to replace the 3- channel DMX The DMX has all of the same capabilities as the 3-channel decoder, but now with the bonus feature of an additional fourth channel. The fourth channel gives you the added capability to control 4-channel RGB+ LED lighting. (Currently, we offer RGB+warm white, RGB+daylight white and RGB+amber. In addition, the DMX is now available in two easy-to-install options, for your convenience: DMX and DMX The last digit in the product name indicates the number of pins in the XLR plug used to connect to the DMX controller. I.e. the DMX is compatible with a 3-pin XLR cable and the DMX is compatible with a 5-pin XLR. Functionality of both products is identical, the only difference being the type of XLR (3 or 5-pin) provided with the decoder. 2 compatibility feature of 3 or 5-pins mainly for the sake of convenience. The DMX simply ignores the audio data from the 2 extra pins and functions using the same data as the DMX The DMX is a reliable way to run RGB and RGB+ LED lighting and can be connected in a daisy chain to suit any size installation, compatible with either a 3 or 5-pin DMX output of your choice. The compact 24 channel DMX is perfect for running more lights with less wiring, but does not support as much current per channel without amplifiers. 3 The DMX ships with the 3-pin XLR cable shown above in Figure 1 and mates with standard 3-pin DMX outputs. The DMX ships with the 5-pin XLR cable shown above in Figure 2 and mates with standard 5-pin DMX outputs. Each will also include an RJ45 jumper to connect to the next decoder, if any. Features Improved performance: the studio version has an output frequency of 5,000 Hertz, which is high enough to avoid the appearance of flickering that can occur with high speed iris cameras increasingly used by state-of-the-art studios. We developed this product in response to requests from our customers in the television and film industry. Converts standard DMX signal to analog signal suitable for driving 12 VDC or 24 VDC LED lighting, such as our LED strips. Output is 4 channels, typically Red, Green, Blue, and White or Amber. Outputs are pulse width modulation (PWM) signals and dim Red, Green, Blue, and White or Amber independently under direction of the DMX input signal. DIP switches on the side allow you to set the decoder s lowest address so it uses the address you desire from your DMX program. Each decoder has a DMX device address you can set. Internal termination provided by a resistor that may be activated by flipping switch amps per channel maximum sustained power; 6.67 amps per channel maximum peak power (3-channel only); 4 channels; 12 or 24 VDC output. Recommended maximum worst-case is 7 amps per channel, or 20 amps total max., whichever is less amps x 12 volts x 3 channels = 240 watts at 12 VDC or 480 watts at 24 VDC. 5 amps x 12 volts x 4 channels = 240 watts at 12 VDC or 480 watts at 24 VDC. Use amplifiers for additional power, if necessary. 0 to 110 F recommended operating range. Power dissipation is < 1 watt. 2 year warranty. 4 Applications Any application requiring conversion of DMX to PWM signals for driving LEDs. Provides 4 channels of output, suitable for 1 Red-Green-Blue-White device or 4 different white channels, for example. Connections The DMX512 In and Out ports at the left in the diagram below are interchangeable. Circuit Diagram Showing a 3-Channel Version of this Decoder RJ45 DMX Port Pin-Outs DIP switches to set address **Please note: An address bit is set ON and has a value = 1 in the down position Controlling 4 Channels: RGB and other (WW, DW, or Amber) The blue DIP switches are used to set the DMX address of the decoder and terminate the DMX system at the last decoder in the chain. DIP switch 1 is the least significant address bit, and 9 is the most significant. DIP switch 10 engages the termination resistor, and should be set on for the last decoder in the chain and off for all other decoders. Typically for 4 channels, zone 1 uses DMX addresses 1, 2, 3, and 4 for red, green, blue, and other respectively. Zone 2 uses addresses 5, 6, 7, and 8 for red, green, blue, and other, and so on. The DIP switch setting should be the lowest of the 4 addresses (red) for each zone. Therefore, the zone 1 decoder should be set to address 1. Zone 2 should be 5. Zone 3 should be 9, etc. You may mix these decoders with other DMX devices, such as wall washers or tiles. This allows you to control many dissimilar RGB, or RGB + other color-changing devices, including these decoders, with one DMX controller. Zone DIP Switch Settings Comment binary = address 1" binary = address 5" binary = address 9" Last zone-termination (DIP 10)= "on" Zone 1 Settings The terminator (a resistor) shown at right is inside the decoder and you do not need to add an external one. To activate the termination resistor, set DIP switch 10 on. To de-activate the termination resistor, set DIP switch 10 to off. Keep signal lines away from power lines to avoid inductive coupling and signal corruption. Allow proper ventilation and mount on metal (heat sink,) if possible. Leave space around the decoder to allow the heat to escape. Controlling 3 Channels: RGB Similar to controlling 4 channels, for 3 channels the blue DIP switches are used to set the DMX address of the decoder and terminate the DMX system at the last decoder in the chain. DIP switch 1 is the least significant address bit, and 9 is the most significant. DIP switch 10 engages the termination resistor, and should be set on for the last decoder in the chain and off for all other decoders. Typically for 3 channels, zone 1 uses DMX addresses 1, 2, and 3 for red, green, and blue. The data from the 4 th channel is repeated and used in zone 2. Zone 2 uses addresses 4, 5, and 6 for red, green, and blue, and the 7 th channel is repeated and used in zone 3 and so on. The DIP switch setting should be the lowest of the 3 addresses (red) for each zone. Therefore, the zone 1 decoder should be set to address 1. Zone 2 should be 4. Zone 3 should be 7, etc. You may mix these decoders with other DMX devices, such as wall washers or tiles. 6 Zone 1 Settings **For a more comprehensive chart of DIP Switch Settings, please refer to Ref Table #2 on the last page Controlling 3 AND 4 Channels: RGB & RGB+ When combining the DMX to control both 3 and 4 channels, the blue DIP switches give flexibility to set the DMX address of the decoder as needed. DIP switch 1 is the least significant address bit, and 9 is the most significant. DIP switch 10 engages the termination resistor, and should be set on for the last decoder in the chain and off for all other decoders. Your zone 1 decoder uses DMX addresses 1, 2, 3, and 4 for red, green, blue, and other. The DIP switch setting for zone 2 will depend on how many channels were actually utilized in zone 1. If you were only controlling 3 channels in zone 1, then the 4 th channel is repeated and used as the first address in zone 2. In other words zone 2 will use addresses 4, 5, 6, and 7 for red, green, blue, and other, if zone 1 was controlling 3 channels. (Simply do not connect anything to output X of the first decoder.) However, if you were controlling 4 channels in zone 1, then zone 2 will use addresses 5, 6, 7, and 8 for red, green, blue, and other. The DIP switch setting for zone 3 will depend on how many channels were used in zone 2, etc. Below is an example of controlling 3 channels in zone 1, 4 channels in zone 2, and 3 channels in zone 3. We developed this product in response to requests from our customers in the television and film industry. Converts standard DMX signal to analog signal suitable for driving 12 VDC or 24 VDC LED lighting, such as our LED strips. Analog output is 24 channels, typically 8 sets of Red, Green and Blue. Outputs are pulse width modulation (PWM) signals and dim Red, Green and Blue independently under direction of the DMX input signal. DIP switches allow you to set the decoder s lowest address so it uses the address you desire from your DMX program. Each decoder has a DMX device address you can set. See page 4 for details on how to set the DIP switches to set the DMX address of the decoder and terminate the DMX system at the last decoder in the chain.
