17 Overview NI-101 NI-101 The NI-101 monitoring card reads the signal present/absent status of the cards in the 15 slots of a Nimbra 143 3RU or the 6 slots of a Nimbra 141 1RU. It also indicates the power fail status from the dual power supplies. It makes these statuses available via the RJ45 Ethernet 10-baseT port to an SNMP environment. It also has a built-in web page to show the statuses. In a Nimbra 143 frame, the NI-101 goes into Slot 16. In a Nimbra 141 frame, the NI-101 goes into its dedicated slot in the front of the frame. Card setup and programming of the non-volatile memory is achieved via a serial port. Ethernet signal status indication is provided on the RJ45 connector by LED indicators. The green left LED indicates a valid connection and the amber right LED shows data flow. The red LED marked STATUS on the front panel flashes when the main program is running collecting status information and providing Ethernet access. The NI-101 is integrated to Nimbra Vision to provide comprehensive network management tools over the entire Nimbra network. Product photos NI-101 NI-101.docx Page - 2

19 Operations NI-101 Network Port This RJ45 connector on the front panel is for an Ethernet cable. This would normally be a straight (non-crossover) cable connecting to an Ethernet hub or router. Please note that if connecting the NI-101 directly to a PC s Ethernet port, a crossover type cable is required. The Net Insight MAC address for the card can be found on the on-card label e.g. MAC address C2-7C Each MAC address is unique to each card, is set at the factory, and should not be changed. The default IP address and configuration information are as shown in the configuration page below. Customers should consult their IT specialist to get the appropriate IP addresses for their network. Serial port The default settings of the NI-101 can be changed using its serial port (J2) to connect to a Personal Computer. This serial port uses standard uart signalling but at +3.3V levels. Connecting to the RS232 port of a computer would require level changing. Another option is to use the Net Insight USB to RS232 converter that uses the reduced levels, NI-Cable-USB-232. Connection of Serial Cable to connector J2 on the NI-101 Pin V (not normally used on cable) Pin 2 - Transmit Data output from the card Pin 3 - Receive Data input to the card Pin 4 - Ground If the NI-Cable-USB-232 converter cable (USB) is used, it should be wired as follows:- J2 Pin 2 TX Data output from NI-101 J2 Pin 3 RX Data input to NI-101 J2 Pin 4 Ground to NI-Cable-USB-232 RXD (yellow wire). to NI-Cable-UBB-232 TXD (orange wire). to NI-Cable-USB-232 Gnd (black wire). Note J2 Pin V should not be connected to NI-Cable-USB-232 Vcc (red wire) unless the USB power has been dropped to 3.3V in the converter cable. If using a USB cable for the first time the system may prompt you to install the driver for the converter. When this has been installed a virtual com port will be available for your preferred terminal program. On the PC you need to run a simple terminal program such as HyperTerminal. Running a Terminal Emulator on the PC On the PC you need to run a simple terminal emulation program such as HyperTerminal. There are a number of public domain terminal programs available, such as Tera Term, PuTTY, Terminal, FoxTerm. These programs can be used for accessing most functions of the NI-101 configuration menu, but one function (downloading updates to the webpage) requires XMODEM file transfers. Many public domain terminal emulators either do not support XMODEM, or work unreliably with the NI-101 (perhaps because the NI-101 has to write each block to eeprom memory before receiving the next one and some terminal emulators can t cope with this reduced speed). The only program we have found (so far) to download these files reliably is HyperTerminal. We will continue to search for a public domain alternative. The appropriate comms port should be set to: bps, 8 data bits, 1 STOP bit, and no parity no flow control XMODEM file transfer (to download image files) NI-101.docx Page - 4

20 Accessing the configuration screen Link LK1 pins 2 to 3 and press the reset button. On coming out of reset HyperTerminal displays the following menu options:- TCP/IP Config (v4.02, Oct :17:26) 1: Change serial number: : Change host name: NI-101 3: Change static IP address: : Change static gateway address: : Change static subnet mask: : Change static primary DNS server: : Change static secondary DNS server: : Disable DHCP & IP Gleaning: DHCP is currently not enabled 9: Download MPFS image. Enter a menu choice: The MPFS image holds binary versions of the card's SNMP MIB file and HTML web page which can be downloaded into serial EEPROM using option 9. After making any changes select option 0: Save & Quit. The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a method of assigning IP and gateway addresses and subnet masks automatically, but it is not implemented on this card. Similarly, IP Gleaning is a method of changing the IP address which is also not implemented on this card and so enabling or disabling this option will not have any effect. Return link LK1 to pins 1 to 2, the status LED should begin flashing again to indicate that the main program is running gathering the frame status information. The card can now be connected to your network. After any changes have been made the software reloads the changes from the serial EEPROM on power up or after a reset. View the frame status information using an SNMP agent program or the default HTTP web page. Accessing the internal web page Each NI-101 has a built-in web server - type the IP address of the card into a standard web browser and a simple status display will be accessible. Maximum data rate approx 1Mbaud GPI control / tally Ethernet Auto negotiation of full or half duplex 10/100 BaseT signal (Ethernet not available on NI-710 models) Principle of operation The NI-700 utilises two 3G optical signals on twin fibres to interconnect HD-SDI/SDI, genlock, GPI and data control signals between camera and base station. The NI-700B base unit combines the composite genlock signal, GPI and all the control data (RS232/422/Ethernet/GPI) onto a 3G optical carrier. This 3G carrier is either locked to the incoming genlock signal or in its absence to an internally generated black. This 3G optical signal is sent through fibre to the NI-700C camera end unit where it provides the genlock and control data for feeding the camera. In a similar fashion the NI-700C takes the SDI/HD-SDI output fed in from the camera, together with control data and encodes them onto a 3G optical carrier feeding the base station. 37 Product Info NI-700 The rear panel connections are as the following diagrams. Power to the cards is provided by the Nimbra frame or the NI-120 stand alone enclosure. All signals operate independently of each other and so for example are not reliant on a valid HD- SDI signal being present. NI-700.docx Page - 3

44 Fault finding guide NI-700 Below are listed some of the more common issues encountered made when first connecting the NI- 700 Are the Base and Camera ends correctly installed and not reversed? This is very easy to do particularly if the boards are not fitted with panels. The Base PCB is marked NI-700B on the reverse side and has less components than the Camera module near the switches. The camera module is similarly marked NI-700C. There are no output signals. Check that there is an optical link between the modules, and that they are crossed. The SFP transceivers are the same at each end and contain a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter of one should be connected to the receiver of the other and vice versa, so the upper section of one SFP should connect to the lower section of the other SFP. There is no reference output. Check that there is a reference signal on the TOP BNC on the BASE module, and that you are monitoring the TOP BNC on the Camera module. Check the optical link. There is no SDI output on the Base module. If there is no signal at all then you are probably connected to the wrong BNC or module. There is only an HD Black from the Base module. This is the default signal when there is no SDI input to the Camera module. In this situation the camera module synthesises a digital black so that the data channels can still be carried. The RS232/422 LEDs do not come on. They both should come on briefly after power up. After that they depend on data being present. The upper of the two reflects input side data, and the lower one output data. If the I/P data LED is on at one end and not the corresponding O/P data at the other end then check the optical link. If the I/P data LED does not work check the data wiring. NI-700.docx Page - 10

76 Description NI-800 The NI-800 is a copper twisted pair to fibre optic media converter for 10/100Mbps Ethernet data. It provides two channels (full duplex) of 100Base-FX data transmission with 10/100Mbps half/full duplex auto-negotiation on singlemode fibre. Data isolation transformers are provided for the twisted pair input and output. An RJ45 type connector is provided for electrical input and output. Two SC type fibre optic connectors are provided for the fibre optic connection. The NI-800 occupies a single slot in the Nimbra " rack-mounting frame which can hold up to 15 single slot cards. The compact Nimbra 141 1RU is available for up to six cards. Signal and card monitoring is achieved through SNMP monitoring in the NI-101 network card. For stand-alone applications the NI-800 can be housed in an individual enclosure, NI-120. Panel Layout NI-800 The NI-800 units are used in pairs over CWDM wavelengths and can be used to provide remote monitoring of the Nimbra system. The NI-800A transmits on one port at a CWDM wavelength of 1310nm with a wideband receiver on the other optical port. NI-800.doc Page - 2

77 The NI-800B transmits on one port at a CWDM wavelength of 1330nm with a wideband receiver on the other optical port. A CWDM link using two separate wavelengths to provide the bidirectional communication can be made when feed into the NI-CW4 and NI-CW8 cards. Circuit Description NI-800 The electrical data input and output from RJ45 type connector J1 is fed to switch SW1 allowing transmit and receive pairs to be interchanged eliminating the need for a crossover patch cord when units are connected directly to a computer network port. The NI-800 is configured in a transparent mode of operation, it does not interfere with or force any condition upon either end-link partner, and it merely translates the electrical/optical signals shared between end-link partners. Both end-link partners must adhere to IEEE802.3 standards regarding auto-negotiation and parallel detection. When a valid link between end-link partners is established the twisted pair link indicator TP10 will go low for 10Mbps or high 100Mbps. and the fibre link indicator TP9 will go low for 10Mbps or high 100Mbps. If there is activity on the network, the two green LED s LD1a and LD1b will also light up, blinking on when valid data packets are present on their respective link. Links LK1 and LK101 can be configured to disable the data packet indication output to the system status monitoring, link pins 1 to 2 to enable and link pins 2 to 3 to disable. Local on card indication via LD1a and LD1b can be similarly be enabled or disabled via links LK2 and LK102. 87 Description NI-CW2, CW4, CW8 The NI-CW2, CW4 and CW8 units are completely passive optical devices requiring no power supplies, configuration or control. All units can be used to maximise the number of wavelengths that can be accommodated in a single fibre. Any wavelength transported down an optical link can be bi-directional. The NI-CW2 uses Wave Division Multiplexing, (WDM), for the multiplexing or demultiplexing of two optical wavelengths onto or from a single fibre optic cable. The NI-CW2 operates with 1310 and 1550 nm wavelengths on singlemode fibres. One WDM module is used to combine the two separate wavelengths while a second at the receive end separates the two signals again. The NI-CW4 and CW8 devices use Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing, (CWDM) for the multiplexing or demultiplexing of different and independent optical wavelengths onto or from a singlemode fibre optic cable. Each device complies with the ITU G grid specifications. An NI-CW4 allows up to 4 channels to be combined or separated with 20 nm wavelength spacings. The NI-CW8 combines upto 8 independent wavelengths to be transported onto a single fibre. Adding additional NI-CW4 or NI-CW8 cards allows the system to transmit a total of 16 independent wavelengths on a single fibre. Each card occupies a single slot in the Nimbra 140 Series frames and enclosures. Time Division Multiplexing used prior to optical conversion also increases the number of signals that can be carried on each optical wavelength. NI-CW2_4_8.docx Page - 2

96 Description NI-2x1SW The NI-2x1SW is a two input, one output single mode fibre optic switch designed to offer system designers increased flexibility in their fibre installations. Two separate optical inputs A and B are fed into the single slot Nimbra 140 card. Internal logic on the card senses the light levels of the inputs and will switch from a main to a reserve path in the event of signal loss. By routing two separate diverse fibres to the A and B inputs automatic switchover will occur in the event of a failure in the transmission path caused by a faulty fibre or connector. The sensitivities at which the changeover occurs can be user defined to suit the installation and increasing user confidence. An NI-SPLIT can be used upstream to provide a 50:50 optical feed to the separate optical fibre inputs. One of the two input channels is selected to the single output if the light level on the other channel falls below a preset threshold level. The threshold level can be preset over an input signal range of -30 to -15 db in 1dB steps for each input channel. The level is set via rotary hex switches on the rear panel. If both signal levels are either above or below the preset threshold level then the switch defaults to select the main channel input, A. Each card occupies a single slot in the Nimbra 140 Series frames and enclosures. Panel Layout NI-2x1SW NI-2x1SW.docx Page - 2
