1 General Mini Gear Indicator Manual SW024 This Gear Indicator is designed to work on motorbikes with digital rev and speed signals. The current gear is displayed on a 7 segment LED display. The Gear Indicator determines the gear by measuring and calculating the frequency ratio between rev and speed signal and by checking the status of the neutral switch. No indication is possible if one of these signals is missing. Luminosity of the display is changeable in 10 steps. Gear recognition has to be teached according to the individual bike type. A few bike types are already pre-saved for easy retrieval. Manual or automatic setting is also possible. The device is controlled by a single button, placed on the backside. To find your given software version use menu item 8, it has to fit to the version in the title of this document. Older manuals are still valid as long as no newer version is released. Normal Operation The Gear Indicator starts working with ignition switch-on. During normal operation the following readouts are possible: Readout Function Neutral Gear 1 Gear 2 Gear 3 Gear 4 Gear 5 Gear 6 No valid signals, gear can not be determined (standstill, clutch slipping, etc.) Brightness Brightness of the display can be changed in 10 steps (menu #1). cvieth@arcor.de 1/5 Version 24, April 2012

2 Settings menu Mini Gear Indicator Manual SW024 A simple menu structure is implemented to alter settings. The button is used for navigation: - Keep button pressed until appears, release button. Menu mode is now engaged. - Display shows 0 and counts up with each subsequent click to the button. After two seconds of inactivity the number of clicks is taken as jump position into the menu according to the following list. All clicks are counted but only the least digit is displayed: # of clicks / item Display Description 1 Flashing value Change brightness. Values Keep button pressed until desired value is reached. 2 4,5 or 6 Number of gears. Keep button pressed until desired values is reached. 3 Flashing digit, current gear to be teached Teaching the gears: - Ride in the given gear and press button, wait until next digit appears - Repeat for all gears 4 Save Neutral recognition, high or low signal logic. Toggle function. 5 Save Neutral Sign, 0 or N. Toggle function. 6 7 Single segment running in a circle Single segment running in a circle Check for correct speed signal. Only display, no setting. Each tick of the moves the segment one position. Rotate the wheel slowly by hand. Check for correct rev signal. Only display, no setting. Each 40 th tick of the engine moves the segment one position. Let the engine run at idle Version number of the Software. 3 F1 flashing Recognition Error high (gear above 6), quotient with 4 decimals. 10 F2 flashing Recognition Error low (gear below 1 and not neutral), quotient with 4 decimals. d flashing Delaytime before a new gear is accepted, 2 decimals, range = immediate response 11 Save Weak/Change Signal Indicator. If set to ON the decimal point becomes active while the actual gear does not match to the electronic signals. The electronics calculates for the new gear and waits for the given delaytime until displayed. Toggle function on/off. 14 Save Reset all setting to factory default. 15 Save Slow Clocked Signals. Option for better signal handling on bikes with only a single speed click per rotation. 16 Delay Factor flashing 17 Averaging Factor flashing Gear Delay Time. Delaytime for gear change recognition Averaging Factor. Minimum number of consecutive identical values before a new gear is recognized. 1 = minimum, instantly any other Save Quick preset to optimal parameters for selected bikes. 20 = FZS1000 (= FZ1 gen 1) 21 = FZ1 (gen 2) 22 = FZS = MZ SM = FZ6 25 = Honda CBR1100XX 26 = FZ8 Back to normal operation Only one item can be selected at a time. Mode changes back to normal at the end of each item. Re-enter the menu for further changes. General behaviour for editing: A short click leads to the next entry (or sub-item if present) without any change. A long keypress changes the actual displayed value. 4 Menu 1, toggling brightness - Switch on ignition. - Press 1 time to jump to menu 1, display counts up. - Keep button pressed until desired brightnes is reached. Loop continuous to run from 0 to 9 until released. - Brightness changes and display reads SAVE. - Automatic return to normal operation Menu 3, teaching new gears A manual teaching has to be applied if no preset (menu 20 to 26) fits. This might also become necessary in case of an installed speedohealer. - Switch on ignition. Start engine. - Press 3 times to call menu #3, display counts up. - Display flashes constanly with the gear to be teached. Ride the bike constantly at about 3000rpm. - Press the button, the display shows for some seconds. At this point the electronic tries to determines the gear. On success it reads. (On failure it reads, restart from the beginning) - Repeat the procedure for all gears. At the end the display shows SAVE and jumps back to normal operation. Menu 9, changing / viewing gear recognition values manually This procedure is a bit difficult, menu 3 should be used preferably. - Switch on ignition. - Press 9 times to call menu 9, display counts up. - Display flashes with actual changeable gear 1. There are 3 possible actions: display only, changing manually, automatic detection during test run: Display only: o Short click, all 4 decimals will be shown one after another, most significant coming first. o At the end the next gear is flashing. o Repeat for all gears. o Automatic jump back to normal operation. cvieth@arcor.de 4/5 Version 24, April 2012

5 Manual change: o Short click, all 4 decimals will be shown one after another, most significant coming first. o If the desired decimal comes along press and keep the button. The value will now be altered slowly in an endless loop. Release button if the desired value is reached. o Repeat for remaining decimals if required. Otherwise proceed as described in Display only. o Changes will be stored automatically. Automatic detection by test run (only for gear 1 to 6 ): o Keep button pressed until 3 horizontal bars appear, release. Now the electronic waits for teaching to be started. o Ride with the bike with the respective gear at moderate and constant revs. o Press button shortly to start teaching. Several segments start flashing while teaching is in progress. Ready after a few seconds. o Afterwards all 4 decimals will be shown sequently. o Repeat for further gears or skip with as with Display only. Specialities: Item d (Delaytime) only got 2 decimals. Values for F1 and F2 will be calculated automatically (suggested), unless they are edited intentionally. All modified values will be saved instantaneously, the display reads S-A-V-E. During teaching the signals should be centered by means of rev and speed, 4000 rpm is a good choice. Presets: Speed/Revs-quotient and delays.
