1 Introduction The ViLite RF Links re fmily of fibre opticlly coupled link systems designed for the trnsmission of RF nlogue signls over long distnces for the stellite communictions mrket. This hndbook covers the following ViLite RF Link prt numbers: Trnsmitter units with prt numbers strting o LRT-B-, (10-200MHz), o LRT-L-, ( MHz) Receiver units with prt numbers strting o LRR-B-, (10-200MHz), o LRR-L-, ( MHz) Opticl fibre interconnects with prt numbers strting o F6- (FC/APC) o F7- (E2000/APC) For complete informtion nd product fmiliristion, this hndbook should be red in conjunction with the generl hndbook for ll ViLite systems (document Lxx-HB). A typicl system opertes s follows. The user s RF electricl signl is input to the Trnsmitter Module, which contins RF signl conditioning nd lser control circuitry. The module modultes the intensity of bem of light with the RF signl. The light trvels through n opticl fibre to the Receiver Module. The distnce between trnsmitter nd receiver cn rnge from 1m to 50km depending on the system specified. The Receiver Module converts the modulted light bck into n electricl signl, which is vilble t the output of the unit. Cre of fibre optic connectors NB : When the fibre optic cbles re not connected, it is essentil tht the cble nd equipment connectors re protected by the Dust Cps provided with the system. Filure to do so my result in dmge to the fibre ends, which re criticl to the system performnce. Plese refer to section 2.2 for fibre optic cble hndling detils. 5

2 Setting up nd Understnding the Link This section describes the connections between your RF Fibre Optic Trnsmitter nd Receiver Modules, nd the opertion of both units in system. Plese red fully document Lxx-HB for informtion on instlling your ViLite equipment before commissioning your RF link system. 2.1 Module Opertion Plug-in Modules The Plug-In modules re designed for use in PPM s ViLite 19 rck cse. The module is powered from the rck cse bckplne nd ll connections re on the rer pnel. To fit the module, slide it into the desired rck cse position until the bckplne connector mtes with the connector on the bck of the unit. Push fully home nd tighten the two fixing screws Shielded Remote Modules The shielded remote modules re designed for use in electriclly hrsh environments nd cn withstnd high electromgnetic fields. Modules re powered using PPM mins power supplies, of which screened nd low-cost versions re vilble. The module is fully opertionl once power is pplied, nd hence it is recommended tht RF signl nd opticl connections be mde before the unit is powered. The module cn be mounted in ny orienttion using the four fixing holes provided through the cse OEM Modules The smll form fctor OEM module llows System Integrtors nd Originl Equipment Mnufcturers n esy route to build RF/opticl interfces into their own design. Its smll form fctor nd integrted design should llow the unit to esily be integrted into end user equipment. 2.2 Fibre Optic Cble & Connectors Connector nd Cble Types All ViLite RF modules use singlemode (9µm/125µm) cble terminted with either FC/APC or E2000/APC opticl connectors. Cross-site fibre optic cbles re vilble from PPM s either stndrd ptch leds or hevy-duty multicore cbles. Wrning! FC/APC nd E2000APC re stndrds for ngle-polished connectors nd must not be confused with stndrd FC/PC nd E2000 connectors respectively. The two connector-types re not interchngeble nd mting one with the other will dmge both the cble nd the module connectors. The specifiction of the FC/APC nd E2000APC opticl connector is criticl to the performnce of the complete fibre optic link. System performnce cn only be gurnteed with fibre optic cbles nd connectors supplied by PPM. FC/APC connectors must be nrrow key width (see technicl specifiction) Connecting nd Disconnecting Before connecting opticl fibres to the module or to ech other, ensure tht the mting connectors re clen (see below) FC/APC To connect FC/APC opticl connectors, remove the dustcps nd lign the white cermic centre ferrule on the cble connector with the receptcle. There is lug on the side of the ferrule, which must mtch the gp in the receptcle shroud. When they re ligned, gently push the plug home nd finger tighten the knurled collet nut onto the threded receptcle. See figure 1 below. To disconnect FC/APC connectors, unscrew the knurled collet on the plug nd gently withdrw the plug. Replce the dustcps on both the receptcle nd the cble plug. Wrning! It is possible to tighten the knurled collet without ligning the lug nd gp. This will result in poor light trnsmission. Check tht the lug nd gp re ligned before tightening the knurled collet 6

Figure 1 () showing FC/APC connector with dust cp removed, (b) showing lignment of the lug on the side of the ferrule, which must mtch the gp in the receptcle shroud before gently pushing the plug home nd finger tighten the knurled collet nut onto the threded receptcle. () (b) E2000/APC To connect E2000/APC opticl connectors, simply push the connector positively into the receptcle until click is herd. The protective shutter will utomticlly lift s the connector is mting. To disconnect E2000/APC connectors, depress the lever on the connector to disengge, then withdrw the connector from the receptcle. The shutter is spring-loded nd should spring bck to protect the ferrule. Cre nd Clening The opticl connectors should be clened before ech nd every use, even where they hve been protected with dust cps. Clening items required Lint free fibre clening tissues nd/or clening sticks(norml cosmetic tissues produce dust nd re not cceptble); Regent grde Iso Propyl Alcohol; Air duster or FILTERED compressed ir line. Cble Connector Clening Dmpen ptch of clening tissue with IPA nd clen ll surfces of the plug ferrule. Using dry clening tissue, dry the ferrule nd polish the end fce. Using the ir duster, blow wy ny residue from the end of the connector. Module Femle Receptcle Clening (only recommended if problems re being experienced) Either use clening stick or twist clening tissue to form stiff probe, nd moisten with IPA. Gently push the probe into the receptcle nd twist round severl times to dislodge ny dirt. Repet the bove process with dry tissue. Using the ir duster, blow wy ny residue from the receptcle. Importnt Notes IPA is flmmble. Follow pproprite precutions / locl guidelines when hndling nd storing. IPA cn be hrmful if spilt on skin. Use pproprite protection when hndling. It should only be necessry to clen the femle receptcles on the modules if problems re being experienced. Never inspect n opticl fibre or connector with the nked eye or n instrument unless you re convinced tht there is no opticl rdition being emitted by the fibre. Remove ll power sources to ll modules, nd completely disconnect the opticl fibres Minimum Bend Rdius Becuse the opticl fibre is mde of glss, it is importnt not to subject it to excessive stress. For this reson, ech type of cble hs minimum bend rdius (MBR) specifiction, beyond which the cble cnnot be bent without permnent dmge occurring. Minimum Bend Rdius of Fibre Optic Cble fitted to OEM modules is 50mm MBR specifictions for PPM fibre re given in the ViLite System Hndbook Lxx-HB. 7

2.3 Using the Trnsmitter Module Connecting the Module Connect the trnsmitter module to the power source, cross-site fibre optic cble nd RF signl s described in section 2.1. The RF input signl pplied to the signl connector should be within the mximum nd minimum signl levels given in the technicl specifictions in section Front Pnel Indictors The trnsmitter hs two front pnel LEDs for indiction of the stte of the module. The following tble shows the opertion of the front pnel LEDs : Upper LED (Power) Lower LED (Sttus) OFF Unit Off Unit Off GREEN Unit OK Lser OK RED Internl Fult Lser Filed Alrms nd Monitors The trnsmitter module hs single lrm, which registers the sttus of the trnsmit lser. Activtion of this lrm registers n internl fult nd the unit should be replced with spre nd returned to your locl PPM representtive. The lrm stte mimics the condition of the front pnel Sttus LED. Since the lrm is logic HIGH (OPEN) when ctivted nd pulled LOW (SHORT) by trnsmitter module in good helth, the lrm t tht rck position will be ctivted until working trnsmitter is inserted. An unused rck position registers n lrm t tht position. This lrm condition cn be msked if n LRK1S or LRK2S Rck Cse is used. Consult System Hndbook Lxx- HB for detils. On the OEM units ONLY. The forwrd current monitor (IFL) gives n bsolute mesure of the lser drive current. VIFL = 68 x Ifwd (A). e.g. Lser drive current of 40mA, produces 2.7V. Typicl room temperture rnge is 20 to 50mA. [Suggested thresholds: 10/80mA] 2.4 Using the Receiver Module Connecting the Module Connect the receiver to the power source, fibre optic cross-site cble nd RF signl s described in sections Front Pnel Indictors The receiver hs two front pnel LEDs for indiction of the stte of the module. The following tble shows the opertion of the front pnel LEDs : Upper LED (Power) Stndrd Lower LED (Signl) Stndrd OFF Unit Off Unit Off GREEN Unit OK Link OK RED Internl Fult Excessive Link Loss Mnul Gin Adjustment B nd L bnd receivers re optionlly vilble with control tht llows the user to lter the fctory pre-set link gin by +/- 3dB djustment of electricl signl gin. This feture is prticulrly beneficil where multiple links re being used in redundnt configurtion, s it llows the user to ccurtely compenste for opticl fibre loss, nd thus finely equlise the gin between the individul links. The gin is djusted by inserting suitble screwdriver or trim tool (1.8mm stright blded or similr) through the recess in the front pnel [plug-in] or hole in the lid [OEM] receiver module. Vrible gin receiver units re shipped from the fctory with set to the mid point of there nominl gin (i.e. the gin djustment is centrlised nd preset to 0dB offset). 8

2.4.4 Alrms nd Monitors The receiver module hs one lrm nd one nlogue voltge monitor. The lrm registers the sttus of the input light level. When the opticl power t the input of the receiver unit is bove the lrm threshold (equivlent to 20dB opticl loss) the lrm is ctivted. As soon s the received light level is restored to vlue bove the threshold, the lrm is reset. The lrm stte mimics the condition of the front pnel Sttus LED. Since the lrm is logic HIGH (OPEN) when ctivted nd pulled LOW (SHORT) by receiver with strong opticl input signl, the lrm t tht rck position will be ctivted until working receiver is inserted. An unused rck position registers n lrm t tht position. This lrm condition cn be msked if n LRK1S or LRK2S Rck Cse is used. Consult System Hndbook Lxx-HB for detils. There is lso Received Light Level (RLL) monitor on the bckplne connector. This enbles the user to mesure received opticl power for ech chnnel. This cn be done either mnully or vi system mngement console (if pplicble) connected to the rck cse lrm connector. See document Lxx-HB for detils of the Alrm Concentrtor Connector. The RLL monitor gives n bsolute mesure of the opticl power t the receiver module. RLL Output Voltge = 7.75V t nominl system gin (0dB opticl loss) nd reduces by 0.25dB per db opticl loss (0.125V per db of RF link loss). This monitor is covered in further detil in the commissioning procedure in section 0. The RLL hs liner monotonic chrcteristic over minimum of 20dB opticl loss (pprox 2.25V to 7.75V). 2.5 LNA Feed All informtion in this section refers to fibre optic trnsmitter modules only. LNA voltges re fed out through the RF input connector on the Tx modules. OEM Modules Modules in this rnge DO NOT offer n internlly generted LNA feed voltge. Some modules do offer n bility to route user fed LNA voltge through PIN 13 on the 14-wy heder, detils shown below. When using PPM Outdoor Enclosure, externl LNA feed is vilble vi the outdoor enclosure motherbord. Plug-In Modules Depending on product bndwidth type there re options for internlly generted 5V or 12V LNA feed, nd options to route user fed LNA voltge through PIN 14 of the rer 15-wy D-sub Connector, detils shown below. It is not possible to route user fed LNA voltge through PIN 14 of the rer 15-wy D-sub Connector on ny modules tht hve been purchsed with internlly generted LNA feeds. 10 3 System Integrtion 3.1 Link Loss Budget Clcultions The link gin (Trnsmitter RF input level to Receiver RF output level) depends on the following fctors: Opticl loss (due to connector insertion loss nd opticl fibre loss) Trnsmitter gin setting Receiver gin setting The ctul link gin cn be determined s follows: Link gin = Nominl Link Gin 2 x (opticl loss) [db] where Opticl loss = connector insertion losses + fibre losses Opticl Loss The dditionl electricl insertion loss in db resulting from opticl losses is equl to 2 times tht of the opticl loss in db. This is due to the physics of the opticl-to-electricl conversion process in the receiver. For exmple, 1dB increse in opticl insertion loss will result in 2dB decrese drop in RF signl t the output of the opticl receiver. For single-mode fibre (e.g. SMF28), the opticl loss t the 1310nm operting wvelength of the ViLite RF Anlogue links is 0.4dB/km. For 1550nm operting wvelength, the opticl loss of the ViLite RF Anlogue link is 0.2dB/km This is incresed if the fibre is under excessive tension, compression or is bent into smll rdius. For clen, new, undmged single-mode connectors, the opticl insertion loss is typiclly 0.12dB per connector. The losses t the opticl connections t the Trnsmitter nd Receiver re llowed for during mnufcture of the module, nd my be ignored during link gin clcultions. For short links (<250m) contining no dditionl opticl connectors, nd in which the fibre is not subject to ny strin, then the opticl pth loss cn be ignored. 3.2 Typicl System Configurtion with fixed gin modules The digrm below illustrtes typicl communictions system configurtion. Trnsmitting Eqpt. Receiving Eqpt. PPM.. ViLite Rck Unit contining Trnsmitter Module Cross-Site Fibre Optic Cble PPM.. ViLite Rck Unit contining Receive Module The link gin for the fixed gin systems depends solely on the loss through the opticl fibre link from trnsmitter to receiver. There is Received Light Level (RLL) monitor output on the receive modules which cn be used to mesure the mount of lser light from the trnsmitter reching the receiver during opertion. This feture is only vilble on plug-in receiver modules. The RLL threshold lrm (which is triggered when the RLL drops below preset level) cn be used to determine if the opticl link hs been dmged or degrded. This is visible s n lrm on the front pnel nd n open collector lrm on the lrm concentrtor connector (see hndbook Lxx-HB). In the cse of system tht uses receiver modules with optionl mnul vrible gin, +/-3dB of electricl signl gin djustment is vilble if necessry to compenste for fibre optic cble loss. 10

3.3 Commissioning of Communictions Link This commissioning procedure illustrtes the processes required to instll nd set up communictions link with gin control. The exmple describes the commissioning of 70/140MHz interfcility link, but the technique cn be pplied to other module types including L-bnd. Down Converter Cble Termintion Box Sttion A PPM.. ViLite Rck Unit contining Trnsmitter Module Sttion B Cross Site Cble Cble Termintion Box Demodultor PPM.. ViLite Rck Unit contining Receive Module We will be considering the instlltion of the following system. A down converter provides n output signl in the 70/140MHz IF bnd. The signl must be conveyed over 1500m of fibre, through bulkhed t ech sttion, to the demodultor. An lrm must trigger if the opticl pth is dmged. 1. Instll the link, connecting ll opticl ptchcords nd cross-site fibre optic cbles. Clen ALL opticl connectors BEFORE mting with the module. 2. Power up the equipment nd llow 15 minutes to wrm up. 3. Ensure tht the RF power into the trnsmitter module is set to optimum for your system. Use brodbnd RF power meter for this mesurement. Typiclly this is the input level t which the link IMD is -40dBc. This vlue of input power is given in the dtsheet for the link. 4. Clculte the pproximte opticl ttenution in the fibre pth. In our cse, we hve two bulkhed 0.4dB ech, 1500m of opticl fibre = 0.6dB, giving totl of 1.4dB of opticl loss. The totl RF gin of the system should be the nominl link gin minus 2x the opticl loss. 5. Confirm tht the RF output from the receiver is correct (to within mesurement ccurcy, couple of dbs). If the loss is much higher thn clculted, the most likely explntion is dirt on the opticl connectors. If this is the cse, clen ech connection in turn until the required system gin is restored. 3.4 Alrms & Monitoring Module Alrm Output The circuit below shows how the lrm output should be configured for ll types of ViLite module. The switch (to the left of the dotted line) is internl to the module. The circuitry to the right of the dotted line is provided by the system user*. In the presence of n lrm condition, the module will ct s high impednce node nd will NOT sink current. This is filsfe system in tht n lrm condition will be rised when module is not present. This is n importnt fctor when commissioning link mngement systems, s blnk module positions will register module fults. Internl to module Externl to module VEXT Pull-Up Resistor Alrm Ground This circuitry is lso provided by the Redundncy Switch module nd the Alrm Concentrtor module. When either of these modules re used, the lrm outputs cn not be considered "VOLT FREE". This is becuse the Redundncy Switch module nd the Alrm Concentrtor modules use the sme module lrm outputs to detect whether unit hs filed. When these modules re used, voltge of between 5V nd 12V my be present on the 'Alrm' output line when the module is in the filed mode. When the module is working correctly, the voltge on the 'Alrm' output line will be 0V (+1.0/- 0). If true "VOLT FREE" contcts re required, plese consult PPM. Mximum current = 50mA Mximum voltge = 15V 11
