MR SLAVE The MR Slave module (MRS= MultiRoomSlave) enables you to use an M51 as an Additional room amplifier in all the additional rooms in a Multiroom installation. In this case, as before, the main M51, with integrated Multiroom module, acts as the central unit, while the M51 Slave (M51 with a built-in MR Slave module) acts like an M219 Additional room amplifier. Additionally, the M51 Slave offers the source import function. As with all Additional room amplifiers, the Multiroom sources that are available through the Multiroom cable are also available to the M51 Slave. This includes, for example, the Music server and the central main Tuner. The Multiroom sources are identified by two stars, * Source * The M51 Slave offers all the usual range of options that you would expect from a normal M51. This means that you have a DVD Receiver with 5.1 Home cinema sound, a stand-alone Tuner and you can of course, connect many other sources like you are used to, assuming of course, that these modules are integrated in the M51 Slave. If required, these Multiroom sources can be added in to the M51 Slave Source menu. Since the M51 Slave acts like a fully equipped Additional room amplifier, you can also control or call its Timer from the main M51. These Operating instructions take you through the installation and functionalities of the MRS Module. 2
Assembly The MRS plug-in card is equipped with the latest in electronics and should be handled carefully. Before you insert the card, the M51 must be switched off and completely disconnected from the power supply by removing the power plug from its socket. You should select plug-in position 5 for the MRS Module. This is where the Multiroom module is plugged before the unit leaves the factory. There should only ever be one of these modules in the M51; either the Multiroom modules or the MRS module. Loosen the two screws using the TORX screwdriver supplied and remove the blanking plate. Remove the MRS Module from its packaging and insert it into the corresponding plug-in position. The two tracks inside the M51 are to be used as the guides for correct positioning. The card is correctly inserted if the lettering on the MRS Module is at the top. Just before the card is fully inserted, you will feel a certain mechanical resistance as the card meets the M51 contact strip. Push the card fully home by pushing in the area where the 2 screw holes are located and fix it in place with the two screws. All further steps needed to integrate the new module into the M51 will be carried out automatically next time the unit is switched on. Before you remove the MRS Module from its packaging, you should ensure that your body does not have any static electricity as this could cause damage to the module when you touch it. You should discharge any electricity from your body by touching a metal object such as a radiator, or similar. 3
Connection MR BUS On the rear of the MRS Module, there are 2 connectors with RJ45 sockets. Connect the input IN with the Multiroom cable from the corresponding Zone. Connection is done using a straight-through (not crossed), double-screened CAT7 patch cable, with an RJ45 plug. If further Additional room amplifiers are to be operated in this Zone, you should simply loop the Multiroom cable on to the other Additional room amplifiers, using the OUT output. For a description, see the MR Slave cabling graphic on the following pages. You will also find further information about Multiroom cabling on the last page of these Operating instructions. Basic information about the REVOX Multiroom system can be found in the Multiroom Chapter in your Operating instructions. 4

MR Slave cabling 6
MR Slave cabling The graphics shown on the previous pages show part of a Multiroom installation. In this case, a M51 Slave works as an Additional room amplifier in one Zone, alongside the normal M219 Additional room amplifier. All Additional room amplifiers are controlled and supplied with audio signals from the M51 Master (with integrated Multiroom module). This cabling example simply shows one option in one Zone. Basically, the following installation rules apply: One M51 Master can control up to 32 M51 Slaves, made up of 8 M51 Slaves in each of 4 Zones. The combination and the sequential order of M219 and M51 Slave can be selected at will. The cabling, as shown, can be done as a Daisy Chain*. It can however, also be done in a star format. * Daisy Chain If several peripheral devices are connected one after the other on one line, this is referred to as a Daisy chain. Within one Zone, each M51 Slave or M219 must be assigned its own address between 1 and 8. No address may occur more than once within any one Zone. The combination of M51 Slaves and M219 can be different in each Zone. 7
MULTIROOM SETUP The Multiroom setup allows the user to import certain Multiroom sources and to assign a Multiroom address to the M51 Slave. The Multiroom function is called in the Setup menu. Press and hold the Setup key for approx. 2 seconds until the following display appears. Import list The Import list defines which Multiroom sources can be imported from the main M51 (Master). These imported sources are then available as additional sources in the M51 Slave Source menu. In order to differentiate the imported sources from a local M51 Slave source, the imported sources are identified with a star (*) before and after the source name, e.g. *Tuner*. At the first call, all 4 possible Import sources are blocked and marked with the word No. The following Multiroom menu is called by pressing the Multiroom softkey. The following display appears: The following sources are available as Import sources: 1. Tuner 2. CD/ DVD 3. Aux/ Server 4. Aux 2 8
Important The pre-requisites for the import of a source are of course that: 1. The M51 Master has access to this source 2. The M51 Master and the M51 Slave sources are correctly assigned in the Remote menu. Example Re. 1) The M51 Master does not have a Tuner module built-in. For this reason, no Tuner source can be imported. Re. 2) The source Rec-In has been assigned to the Remote button Tuner in the M51 Slave Remote menu. In this case, instead of the Tuner, the Rec- In source from the Analogue I/O module would be called. The same applies also to the M51 Master. Importing sources The required source is imported by simply pressing the corresponding source softkey and the display changes from No to Yes. Pressing the softkey again deactivates the imported source and the display changes again to show No. In the example shown below, the three sources Tuner, CD/DVD and Aux/Server have been imported, while the Aux2 source is deactivated. Once you have configured the 4 Import sources as you want them, press the Store softkey and your settings are saved. You will find further information about the Remote menu in the Chapter Introduction in your M51 Operating instructions. 9
The new Source menu As opposed to the main M51, the M51 Slave has the imported sources available, in addition to the local sources. The imported sources are identified with a star before and after the source name. In the following example, these are the sources *Tuner*, *Server* und *DVD/CD* Room addresses Each M51 Slave must be assigned its own address so that each can be controlled individually, e.g. for use as an alarm with the Timer function. All M51 Slaves and M219s, including any M217 Wall displays, within one Zone must have different addresses as otherwise there will be communication problems. There are two processes for assigning the correct Room address: Please note Imported sources cannot be used as a source for recording at the M51 Slave as shown by the text: Recording: Not Available If you want to make recordings from these sources, this must be done at the main M Your Multiroom system documentation identifies the addresses that have already been assigned (for M217 and/or M219). In this case, simply select an address that has not yet been assigned. 2. No documentation is available. In this case, go to the main M51 and check the corresponding Zone where the M51 Slave is to be connected, through Setup Multiroom Version. Select an address that has not already been assigned. Free addresses are identified as Not used. 10
Assigning addresses Once you have identified an available address, this is entered using the Room softkey. By repeated pressing of the Room softkey, you can go through the loop of numbers from 1 to 8. Once the correct Room address is selected, this is confirmed and saved by pressing the Store softkey. Important All devices installed in a particular Zone (M51 Slave, M219 and/or M217) must appear in the corresponding listing. If two devices have been given the same address, neither of them appears in the list. Instead, the text Not used To check that the address settings are correct, this can be done as mentioned above at the main M51 through Setup Multiroom Version. appears next to the corresponding address. This is a clear indication that an error has been made when assigning addresses. In this case, you should check the address settings again. In the above example, two M51 Slaves are installed in Zone 4 (#4_) along with the M219 Additional room amplifiers with the corresponding M217 Wall displays. The first M51 Slave (MRS) has the address 4; the second MRS has the address 7. You will find an exact description of Version control in the Chapter Multiroom / Version. 11
TIMER MENU The Timer is the time-based control centre of the Multiroom system. Using this function, you can wake yourself on specific days or using the Sleep function, you can lull yourself off to sleep with your favourite music. The Multiroom menu Timer is called by pressing the Setup key on the front of the M51 Slave. The following display appears after the first call. Programming the Timer The Timer programming concept is as follows: First you select one of the four Timers and then you assign the corresponding properties to this Timer. The graphic below shows the Timer s display fields, with the corresponding assignments. Timer status Timer No. Switching times Weekday Volume Source 12
Select timer The Select option The properties of the individual Timers can be set using the Select softkey: In the above display, Timer 1 is selected. Using the Timer softkey, you can select the individual Timers. In total, there are 4 independent Timers available. Once you reach Timer 4, pressing the softkey once more will bring you back to Timer 1. Switching time Weekday Volume Select Timer source (Select Tuner station) By repeated pressing of the Select softkey, you can scroll through the following continuous loop: Timer 1 Timer 2 Timer 3 Timer 4 Switch-on time [Hours] Switch-on time [Mins] Switch-off time [Hours] Switch-off time [Mins] Weekday [... ] Volume [... ] Timer source [... ] (Tuner station [... ] ) The setting of the 4 M51 Slave Timers as well as the timers of all other devices can be viewed and modified from the main M51 (Master). At the M51 Slave itself, only the local 4 Timers can be viewed and modified. The two square brackets [...] indicate that this part can be edited with the softkeys, to reach the value you require. 13
Setting switching times Only switch on or switch off Once a Timer has been selected, the switching time settings are defined using the select softkey. The first time the Select key is pressed, the first digit pair appears in square brackets. [ ] As soon as the settings of a Timer are modified, the Timer in questions is automatically activated. In some cases, it is of advantage if the music system is switched on at a particular time but that the switching off is done manually, or vice-versa. In order to make only one timepoint active, you select the display **:** for the hours setting. This option appears between 23h and 0h. The minute settings are not relevant in this case. Firstly, using the softkeys, you define the Switch-on time followed by the Switch-off time Switch-on Switch-off Hours Minutes [7]:[05] [8]:[30] Special case If you choose a timepoint for the Switch-off time which is smaller than the Switch-on time, e.g. 20:15 08:30 the Timer will switch on at 8:15 in the evening and off at 8:30 the following morning. In the above example, Timer 1 starts at 7:15 AM and remains active until it is switched off manually. Timer 2 always switches off at 9:30 PM, irrespective of when it was switched on manually. 14
Special events Setting the weekday With the Timer programming, it is also possible to create nested Timers. This is when two different Timers address the same source and the same room at the same time. In the example shown below, Timer 1 and Timer 2 time periods overlap. Since they are both addressing the same source and the same room, Timer 1 defines the switch-on point while Timer 2 on the other hand, defines the switch-off point. ON ON Timer 1 Timer 2 Switching time OFF OFF With a nested Timer, the switchon and switch-off timepoints are always defined by the event that occurs earlier. Once you have defined the switch-on and switch-off time points, you move to the next input stage by pressing Select again. Here you can define the weekday(s) when the Timer should be activated. [ ] Here, as well as selecting the individual weekdays from Monday to Sunday, you can also choose specific day groupings. The individual days are identified by the following letters: M Monday T Tuesday W Wednesday T Thursday F Friday S Saturday S Sunday 15
Selection is made from a continuous loop, which you can scroll through using the rotary control knob. The individual selections that you can make are shown here: The Day groups SS, MTWTF, MTWTFS und MTWTFSS allow you to activate the Timer at a defined timepoint on each of the days represented. Setting the volume Once you have defined the weekday(s), you move to the next input stage by pressing Select again. Here you can set the volume that should be used when the source is switched on. [ ] This is particularly useful if you want to use the Timer as a wake-up call. The groupings are: SS only Saturday & Sunday MTWTF from Monday to Friday MTWTFS from Monday to Saturday MTWTFSS daily, Monday to Sunday Example: You can use the group MTWTF to wake you on weekdays, but at the weekend, it will leave you to sleep on. Using the rotary control knob, you can set the volume to a level from 1 (very soft) to 9 (very loud) in a continuous loop. Volume 1 Volume 2 : : : Volume 8 Volume 9 16
Selecting the source The Multiroom module timer gives you three sources to choose from. These are the Tuner, DVD/CD and Aux/Server. If instead of assigning the DVD to the DVD module (Fig ), Aux 1 was assigned (Fig ), the Timer would switch Aux 1 on. You can use this function specifically to be able to call external sources through the Timer. In this case, you must make that the external sources (Aux) are also active when the Timer calls them. Please note When selecting the source, you should be aware that the source that will be selected is the source that has been assigned to the Tuner, DVD/CD or Aux/Server through the M51 Slave Remote menu. As well as the local sources, this can also include the imported *Sources* You will find further information on this topic in the Chapter Introduction in the M51 Operating instructions, under the function REMOTE. M51-Slave Remote menu The third option offered by the Remote menu is the deactivation of a source (Fig ). In this case, the Timer would not call any source at the entered timepoint, even though a source has been defined through the Timer menu. 17
Selecting the station Activate Timer If you have selected Tuner as your desired source, when you press Select one more time, you can select the station. [ ] By default, the individual Timers are deactivated. As soon as the switch-on/off timepoints of a Timer are changed, the corresponding Timer is automatically activated. Each of the 4 Timers however, can individually be activated or deactivated. (If you have selected DVD/CD or Aux/Server as your source on the other hand, you will return to the Switching times menu.) Here you can select the radio station that the Timer should play and you can choose from the maximum of 50 stations that have been programmed as your favourites. If you select a station number higher than the actual number of stored stations, station 1 will automatically be selected. Example: 25 Tuner stations are defined. Tuner station 30 is selected. Tuner station 1 will be played. To activate a Timer, select the required Timer (1-4) with the Timer softkeys. Using the On/Off softkey, the Timer can be activated or deactivated and the display changes accordingly from Off to On or vice-versa. If at least one of the Timers is active, a clock symbol appears in the bottom right-hand corner of the M51 display field. 18
Sleep function Using the Sleep function, you can set a particular length of time, after which the M51 Slave will automatically switch off. The current Sleep time is shown in the bottom line of the display, on the right-hand side. By pressing the Sleep key repeatedly, you can set the required time interval in 15- minute steps. The continuous loop starts with 90 minutes and ends with the switching off of the Sleep function OFF 19
