TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller Introduction 1. Introduction This manual describes the Sea Tel Model TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller. Operating instructions, system information, installation, setup, functional testing and maintenance for the TSC-10 are also contained herein. This Touch Screen allows you to monitor and control the Sea Tel Stabilized Antenna Pedestal through the Antenna Control Unit that it is connected to General Description of system The TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller provides a user friendly graphic interface which you will use to remotely monitor and control the Sea Tel Stabilized Antenna and its Antenna Control Unit. It has been designed and manufactured so as to be inherently reliable, easy to maintain, and simple to operate. Except for start-ups, or when changing to operate with different transponders or satellites, the equipment essentially permits unattended operation. The panel accepts an NTSC, or PAL, composite video input from any source you would like to monitor. The video input is seen in a minimized window in the upper right area of the panel. When the panel is not being used to monitor or control the antenna, simply touching the minimized external video window will expand it to full screen. When you want to use the panel to control the antenna, touch anywhere on the screen to minimize the external video window. The TSC-10 will be connected to the Antenna Control Unit and becomes part of your Below-Decks Equipment (BDE) group. The following text provides a basic functional overview of the system components and component interconnection as referred to in the System Block Diagram(s) for your model antenna. Television Receive Only (TVRO) Systems are comprised of two major sections: The Above-Decks Equipment (ADE) is comprised of the Sea Tel antenna & radome assembly which is mounted outside, on an upper deck location chosen for best satellite reception. The Below-Decks Equipment (BDE) includes the Antenna Control Unit and will have satellite receiver(s), TV set(s) and all other ancillary equipment that is mounted in various locations throughout the interior of the ship General scope of this manual This manual describes the Sea Tel Model TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller, its operation and installation. 9 TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller Operation 2. Operation 2.1. Quick Start This page is used to display, or edit, the antenna position, functional settings, LNB type and history of recent AGC (signal level) values. This page is used to display, or edit, the ships Latitude, Longitude and Heading information. Home Page Displays the Ship and Antenna information, Status, recent Receive Signal, Favorite Satellite targeting buttons, the four Main Menu buttons and minimized Video input window. This page displays the Model, Serial Number and Software Version information from the Antenna Pedestal, the Antenna Control Unit and the Touch Screen Controller. This page shows all the viewable satellites in your geographic location. You can target one of the satellites in the scroll list or the graphic arc below. Used to edit the satellite database stored in the panel memory. This menu is used to set or change the "favorite" satellites displayed on the Home Page of your Touch Screen Control panel. This page provides a spectrum analyzer display of frequency versus amplitude of the current satellite signal input to the tracking receiver. Once the system has been setup, the Home Page provides all of the most frequently needed information and the most frequently used buttons. The screen will blank if it has not been touched for one hour, except when it has been left in full screen video mode. If the screen has gone blank (power light and back-lit logo are ON, but the screen is black), touch anywhere on the screen to restore the previously viewed page. The Home Page can be accessed from any other menu location by pressing the Home button. Run, or view the results of, Self Test Diagnostics that the antenna ran during initialization or that you run now. This feature is not available in the current software. Very basic "operator" troubleshooting is programmed into the panel to help you isolate some very basic failures. If this basic troubleshooting does not restore normal operation, these pages will guide you to capture the error/status log and contact your dealer to report the information and arrange for repairs. Provides a diagnostic strip chart recording of antenna performance. It is an excellent tool for a technician to use to capture an intermittent problem in the system. Log of events and status messages that have occurred in the past 24 hours. This page is used to view and edit the parameter settings and the currently installed LNB. The LNB type is used to determine which satellites you could target and track. The system will not let you target a satellite that your LNB cannot receive. View and edit the current Tracking settings for the system. Password required Used to map out the blockage caused by the ships structure. The blockage can be mapped through the full 360 degrees of Relative position around the antenna in 15 degree segments. Each Relative segment can also be mapped in Elevation from 0 to 90 degrees. Allows you to set the correct Date and Time into the panel. 2-1

Operation TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller 2.2. Home Page Once the system has been set-up, the Home page provides all of the most frequently needed information and most frequently used buttons. The screen will blank if it has not been touched for one hour, except when it has been left in full screen video mode. Blanking the display extends the life of the LCD panel. You can tell when blanking is ON because the power light and back-lit logo will be illuminated, and you can touch anywhere on the screen to restore the previously viewed page. When power has been turned OFF the display will be blank AND the power light will be extinguished. The Home Page can be accessed from any other menu location by pressing the HOME button. Status Bar - The Status Bar provides the Pedestal Model number, Pedestal (PCU) Status and system Status. Pedestal Model number and status information come from the Pedestal Control Unit (PCU). The system status comes from the Antenna Control Unit (ACU) & the PCU. AZ/REL/HDG Graphic - Azimuth, Relative and Heading values from the ACU are displayed in numeric and in graphic form. The graphic is comprised of an antenna centered on an overhead outline of a ship, which is surrounded by a true North compass rose. This indicates where the bow of the ship is pointed in reference to true North (based on the Heading input from the ships Gyro Compass). The Antenna position is indicated in two references; Where it is pointed relative to the bow of the ship (Relative) and where it is pointed in reference to true North (Azimuth). EL Graphic - The Elevation graphic indicates where the antenna is currently pointed in elevation. The elevation angle will be between 00.0 degrees (horizon) and 90.0 degrees (zenith). Receive Signal Level Graphic - The current AGC and Threshold values from the ACU are used to update this histograph. The AGC value is displayed in numeric and graphic forms. The graphic form of AGC is Amplitude (vertically) and Time (horizontally) to provide the short term history of the AGC value. The amplitude of the AGC LEVEL and the Threshold value, are graphically displayed. Whenever AGC is greater in value that the Threshold setting, vertical AGC lines will be blue, indicating that a good satellite signal level is being received. When the AGC value falls below the current Threshold value the vertical AGC lines will change color to red, indicating that the satellite signal is too low. The system will time out and begin searching to re-acquire the desired satellite. The system may find other satellite signals that are greater level than the Threshold value, but will continue searching if the signal does not match all of your desired satellite settings. 2-2

TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller Operation Video Input Window (Minimized) - If a composite video input (NTSC or PAL) is connected to the rear panel, it will be displayed in this minimized window. This allows the panel to display video from any desired source while it is not being used to control the antenna. If you touch the minimized window, the video display will maximize to full screen. When maximized, touch anywhere on the screen to minimize the video display. When the video window is minimized, the screen will blank after one hour of inactivity. When the video window is maximized, the screen will NOT blank. Presets 1-5 (Favorite Satellites) - Five Preset buttons can be configured to be your Favorite Satellites from the Satellite Presets menu. To target a satellite, or switch from the satellite you are on to another, you simply touch the desired Preset satellite button you want and then touch the Enter button. You can create Presets for different feed configurations (Interchangeable LNBs) or for different geographic areas that you periodically travel to. If you select a satellite that would require an elevation of zero, or less, Satellite Out Of Range (satellite is below the horizon) will be displayed in System Status on the Status Bar and the satellite will NOT be targeted. If you select a satellite that does not match the current configuration of you feed (polarization type and/or frequency band), Frequency Is Not Supported By LNB will be displayed in System Status on the Status Bar, but the satellite you selected will be targeted if the elevation is above the horizon. Main Menu Buttons - There are four main menu buttons, each having sub-menu buttons to divide the functions of the Touch Screen Controller into groups. The main menu buttons are Antenna, Satellite, Diagnostics and Set Up. Antenna - The Antenna main menu button accesses the Antenna related sub-menus; Settings, Ship and Info. This input signal will be of the polarization that is currently set in the satellite database (or selected directly in the ACU). Analyzer - The graph is comprised of Frequency horizontally and Amplitude vertically. Frequency is from left (lowest frequency) to right (highest frequency) at 40 MHz per division. Amplitude is vertically from bottom (lowest AGC value) to top (highest AGC value) at a range set by the Auto Set and the AGC counts values are displayed on the left (upper & lower) side of the graph. 6-2

TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller Maintenance & Troubleshooting To start a graph, press one of the three frequency range buttons. The spectrum analyzer graph will begin writing from left to right, as indicated by the heavy black line. The heavy Green line is the current Tracking Frequency setting. Press the Auto Set button to automatically center the amplitude of the display. Use the UP or DOWN arrow keys to move the graphed data up or down in the grid (shifts the AGC values). This graph can be very useful for verifying that you are receiving good signal level and to identify satellites. Your tracking frequency should be centered on one of the peaks. If your tracking frequency is centered in between peaks, it could be because your polarization, or frequency, setting for this satellite is incorrect or you are not on the correct satellite Diagnostics - Self Test Menu Note: This feature is not available in the current software. This page will be used to run or view the results of a Self Test. The antenna will automatically run the self test during initialization or will be able to be commanded to run a self test whenever desired. 6-3

Maintenance & Troubleshooting TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller 6.6. Diagnostics - Strip Chart Menu Provides a diagnostic strip chart recording of antenna performance. It is an excellent tool for a technician to use to capture an intermittent problem in the system. Center - Press the center button to center the four selected lines of data in the four windows. Only four lines may be displayed, but all of the data listed in the line assignment paragraph is being recorded. Line assignment - Each of the four lines (Green, Blue, Magenta and Red) can be assigned to display one value of recorded data. The recorded data includes: Elevation, Azimuth, Cross Level, Relative, Heading, AGC, Head+Rel, Relative+ and Heading+. In the screen above the Green line is set to Elevation, the Blue line is set to Azimuth, the Magenta line is set to Relative+Heading (this should be the same as Azimuth if heading input from the Gyro Compass is good) and the Red line is set to AGC. The recorded lines left to right in time, the current value is written on the right limit of the display the older values are stepped to the left as the new value is written on the right. Therefore, the oldest sample is the piece that is farthest to the left, and is just about to be pushed off the left side of the screen. In very basic terms: The Azimuth, Elevation and AGC (signal) values should stay fairly flat while ON satellite indicating signal is staying consistently high and the Azimuth & Elevation values are steady (these will change long term as the ship travels in Latitude & Longitude, but short term they should stay close to the same values). If Azimuth, or Elevation, do move from their correct values, the antenna will no longer be pointed at the peak signal, and the signal level from the satellite should fall. Azimuth is the sum of Heading plus relative, therefore, as Heading goes UP Relative MUST go DOWN (equal & opposite to the Heading input) for the antenna to stay ON satellite. 6-6

TSC-10 Touch Screen Controller Maintenance & Troubleshooting In normal operation (Tracking the satellite), if you see signal level fall (a sign of the satellite signal being lost), you could look at the other displayed lines to see if you can determine why the signal level is falling. You look just slightly to the left of where signal began falling (a few seconds before signal fell). If you see; Elevation moved first then signal started falling you would know that the antenna mis-pointed in elevation and that is why signal fell. Now you would try to find out why elevation moved. If signal fell and none of the other lines appear to have caused it, you would check for blockage or RF signal failure. Press the Center button to center the lines in the graph. Press the Save button to save the current screen of data to a file in the panels memory. If you have captured a loss of signal a Technician will be able to view the file on a computer to try to ascertain why signal was lost Diagnostics - Status Log Menu This page logs events and status messages that have occurred in the system. UP/DOWN arrow keys - Press the UP or DOWN arrow key to scroll through the events in the log. Save key - If you are having frequent or constant errors, press the Save key to save the last 24 hours of data for your dealer technician to review. He will need to see what events were happening to repair the system. 6-7
