B Genlock Setup Overview Required Equipment Using the Genlock Setup Window Selecting the Timing Adjusting the Genlock Output Signal
Appendix B Overview When you output video signals to various types of video equipment (multiple tape decks, media computers, switchers, etc.), you ll want to ensure that all the pieces of equipment are synchronized to each other so that their horizontal and vertical sync pulses occur simultaneously. If your equipment is not in sync, you may have problems displaying stable pictures from some sources. Genlocking is the process of synchronizing video equipment by using the sync signals from one piece of equipment to drive the others and ensure synchronized timing to all units. A master sync generator provides horizontal sync, vertical sync, and subcarrier reference burst signals that flow to every piece of source equipment in your Media 100 system. This configuration maintains a common signal timing reference throughout the system. Each source (including Media 100) is perfectly synchronized in terms of horizontal, vertical, and subcarrier phase. Media 100 s Genlock Setup window provides the ability to genlock Media 100 s output signal with other video equipment. It also allows you to adjust Media 100 s horizontal sync and subcarrier burst signals to match them to the master sync generator. Required Equipment To fully utilize Media 100 s genlocking capability, you ll need the following equipment connected to your system: Before using the Genlock setting, you must have an external timing device connected to your system. The external timing device functions as the master sync generator. This device can be a black burst generator, a sync generator, or any device known to be stable in its video timing. Refer to your Media 100 Installation Guide for connection diagrams and instructions. To adjust Media 100 s horizontal sync and subcarrier burst signals using the Genlock Setup window, you ll need an external vectorscope and waveform monitor connected to your system. 602
Using the Genlock Setup Window Media 100 s Genlock Setup window enables you to select the reference source for video signal timing: either Internal or Genlock. If you select the Genlock timing source, you can adjust Media 100 s horizontal and subcarrier phase signals to match the master sync generator. Genlock Setup B Selecting the Timing The timing setting specifies the reference source used for video signal timing when you output video and synchronized audio from Media 100 to an external device. The Genlock Setup window provides two timing options Internal and Genlock. 1. Select Genlock Setup from the Windows menu or press -4. The Genlock Setup window displays. 603
Appendix B 2. Select the desired timing option from the Timing drop-down menu: Internal This selection chooses Media 100 s internal crystal clock, a stable timing signal, as the video timing source for the output of Media 100 s composite, component, or S-video signals to your external devices When Internal timing is selected, the horizontal and subcarrier phase controls are dimmed. Genlock This selection places Media 100 in genlock mode. When Genlock is selected, Media 100 accepts input from an external timing source, such as a black burst generator, through the Junction Box s Composite Video Input connector. The external timing source delivers a stable signal to synchronize the video signal timing of Media 100 s video output with the output timing of VTRs or other external devices. Synclock This selection is dimmed and is no longer enabled. It is provided for compatibility with earlier versions of Media 100 hardware. Note: Before using the Genlock setting, you must have an external timing source connected to your system. Refer to your Media 100 Installation Guide for connection diagrams and instructions. 604
Adjusting the Genlock Output Signal Genlock Setup B Note: This section describes how to make precise output signal adjustments. To use Media 100 s Genlock Setup window to adjust horizontal sync and subcarrier burst signals, you should be familiar with the operation of a waveform monitor and vectorscope. You ll use the Genlock Setup window s phase adjustments to correct Media 100 s horizontal sync and subcarrier burst output signals so that they are synchronized with the signals provided by the master sync generator. The signals from the master sync generator and Media 100 are in sync when they appear on the external vectorscope/waveform monitor at the same positions with the same phase relationships. The following steps describe how to adjust Media 100 s output signals from the Genlock Setup window. 1. Select color bars or black from the device to which the output of Media 100 is to be genlocked. 2. Set the waveform monitor to a two-line display to look at the horizontal sync and external sync signals (as opposed to internal sync). 3. Using the horizontal phase adjustment, align the waveform so that the leading edge of the horizontal sync signal is on a specific hatchmark (remember this setting). 4. Set the vectorscope to external sync and align the subcarrier burst signal to place the color burst at the 0 degree mark. Note: Note that with component signals, there is no color burst, and thus no subcarrier timing. 5. Select the output from Media 100 on the waveform monitor. 605
Appendix B 6. Use the Horizontal Phase slider to adjust the horizontal sync on the waveform monitor so that the leading edge of the sync signal is at exactly the same location on the monitor as it was for the reference signal in step 3. Horizontal Phase slider To adjust the Horizontal Phase value, you can drag its slider, type the desired value in the corresponding text box, or highlight the text box and press the Up or Down arrow keys. 7. Select the output from Media 100 on the vectorscope. 8. Use the Subcarrier Phase slider to adjust the subcarrier burst on the vectorscope until the color burst is located at the 0 degree mark. Subcarrier Phase slider Media 100 s video output is now synchronized with the master sync generator. 606
