1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The DLM471S-5.1 Multichannel Audio Level Master controls the level of six-channel (5.1) surround program material and in addition provides a stereo downmix output. This product has digital L/R, Ls/Rs, and CENTER/LFE inputs and outputs and will correct audio level variations over a range of more than 30dB. The unit will accept any AES-3id or S/PDIF compatible input signals, and locks to the incoming sample rate. It also has both AES-3id digital and analog outputs for six surround channels plus both digital and analog stereo downmix outputs on the Master control card that can be used for monitoring and/or as a program feed for stereo-only channels. The DLM471S-5.1 digital inputs and outputs are transformerisolated 75-Ohm BNC connectors (AES3-id) for trouble-free interconnection. It can also accept S/PDIF digital inputs, and feed compatible consumer equipment with S/PDIF inputs that can accept 1V digital levels, by using low-cost RCA-to-BNC adapters. The control system is program-dependent and is designed to minimize audible artifacts such as pumping, ducking on loud transients, or noise rush-up in pauses. The gate freezes the audio gain when the audio level subsides to prevent an increase of noise when the program is quiet. The unit controls the audio level without audible compression artifacts, so you get program audio that sounds natural without annoying level variations. A ten-led display indicates the degree of gain control being exerted on each digital audio channel pair and a blue Gate LED lights when the gain control is frozen. An LED on the rear panel indicates the presence of digital input. The monitor/line analog audio output levels are field-programmable by jumpers on the PC cards. The analog output levels can be set for a balanced level of -4, 0, +4 dbu, and also -10 dbu unbalanced. Each DLM471S-5.1 system contains one Master control card with 3 channel-pair cards, for control of six surround channels. Up to two of these systems will fit into one RMS-400 mainframe (5.25" x 19"). The RMS-400 mainframe will hold up to 2 multichannel audio systems in 3 "RU" rack unit spaces. 2.0 INSTALLATION MODULE CARD INSTALLATION 1. Select one of the unused nine positions to be occupied by the new circuit board module. This product will require four rack slots. 2. Remove the blank label in that position by peeling it off of the front panel. Peel the label slowly to remove all of the label and adhesive. Any remaining adhesive may be removed by rubbing the surface with your thumb. ***** WARNING ***** DO NOT USE SOLVENTS TO REMOVE THE LABEL ADHESIVE. The solvent could damage the equipment cards or be a fire hazard. DLM471S.ISB PAGE 2 OF 8
3. Peel the backing off of the new label and apply it to the front panel of the RMS-400 rack in the position of the new card. Align the new label with the screw head in the hole in the lower right hand corner of the label then align the center thumbscrew with the clearance hole in the front panel. This should cause the label to be straight and vertical. When the label is in place press firmly the secure the label. 4. Then remove the thumbscrew retainer from the product card it is located at the front of the card and is removed by rotating the knob counter-clock-wise. 5. Select any and all product options on the specific card,(see the Instructions for individual product). 6. Next slide the card into the card guides at the rear of the RMS Be sure that the notch in the circuit card is facing forward and down. Push the card all the way to the front of the rack until it stops. DO NOT APPLY EXCESSIVE FORCE TO THE CARD. 7. Insert the thumbscrew that was removed in step 4 while rotating it in a clock-wise direction. When it begins to thread into the card, continue until it is finger tight. ***CAUTION - TIGHTEN BY HAND ONLY, DO NOT USE TOOLS TO TIGHTEN THE THUMBSCREW. OVER-TIGHTENING WILL DAMAGE THE CIRCUIT CARD. 8. Attach any cables or wires necessary for operation. NOTE: Most circuit board modules have several adjustments that are carefully factory-set with precision instruments for optimum performance. Change only those that must be adjusted. Some controls, when misadjusted, produce little change under normal operating conditions, but can seriously reduce the ability of the unit to function correctly under other conditions that may be encountered. Therefore, if you must adjust a control, place a mark on it before moving it, so that it may be returned to its original setting with reasonable accuracy. If you have any questions regarding FM SYSTEMS, INC. products, please contact our engineering department at or fax your questions to We will call you back immediately. If any of the analog outputs are to be used, before mounting in the rack check the input level requirements of the equipment to be fed by the Level Master. The L/R, Ls/Rs, and CENTER/LFE analog output levels are factory set for +4 dbu average level, unless otherwise specified. If a lower level is required, refer to the graphics on the PC BOARD for setting the output level select jumpers. Average output levels of -4 dbu, 0 dbu, +4 dbu, can be selected. Additionally an unbalanced level -6 db lower than each of the jumper selections can be used if the output is wired for unbalanced audio. This allows for -10 dbu, -6 dbu, and -2 dbu unbalanced output levels. The output drive is low impedance, so more than one highimpedance audio load may be connected. Driving more than one 600-Ohm load is not recommended. DLM471S.ISB PAGE 3 OF 8
3.0 DIGITAL CONNECTION AND SETUP Connect the cable carrying L/R (left/right) AES3-id from the source equipment to the "AES INPUT" BNC connector of the DLM471 "L/R" slave card. The green LED next to the digital input connector will light indicating lock to the incoming digital signal. The unit will also accept S/PDIF digital audio signals with an RCA-to-BNC adapter, and can drive compatible S/PDIF equipment inputs that can accept a 1Vpp AES3-id digital level. Next connect the cable carrying Ls/Rs (left/right surround) AES3- id from the source equipment to the "AES INPUT" BNC connector of the DLM471 "Ls/Rs" slave card. Then connect the cable carrying CENTER/LFE (CENTER and Low Frequency Effects) AES3-id from the source equipment to the "AES INPUT" BNC connector of the DLM471 "CENTER/LFE" slave card. A relay will click and a green LED near the BNC connector will light on each card when the unit is locked to a digital input signal. Connect to the destination equipment via the "AES OUTPUT" BNC connectors. The output sample rate will be the same as the input sample rate. The input level control is on the L/R card, and affects all channels equally. The C/LFE and Ls/Rs cards have no input level adjustment. The automatic gain control action is matched for all channels to preserve the surround image. No balance adjustments are necessary. Input normal program level and adjust the INPUT LEVEL control on the "L/R" slave card for nominal gain (middle, 0dB LED) indicated on the MASTER card LED display. When gain is increased above nominal, the display moves upward, indicating higher relative gain. It moves downward with lower gain. If a more dynamic sound is desired, drive the unit more lightly (display on Master indicating higher gain), as desired. The actual input drive is not critical, since the unit is, of course, an automatic gain controller. But to make the best use of its control range, try to have normal audio levels cause the display to be near the middle of its control range most of the time. No output level adjustments are recommended. On-air loudness can be set with your encoder dialog level settings. We recommend a setting of -24 on DTV audio encoders as a starting point. If you want the onair audio level to be lower by 3 db, for example, change the setting to -21. Alternatively, set it at -27 to be 3 db louder. (Maximum gain at the consumer s decoder is -31.) These should be the only adjustments necessary, but the other controls and encoder settings will be explained next. NOTE: It is normal for the three surround channel pair cards, L/R, C/LFE and Ls/Rs to indicate little or no gain reduction activity on their individual LED displays, with their Gate LEDS frequently lit. DLM471S.ISB PAGE 4 OF 8
Most of the time, the gain control will be exerted by the Master control card to all three surround pairs identically in order to maintain the original sound field image, and it will be the only card showing normal (about half-scale) gain. When gain is controlled exclusively by the master, the gain indication is on the LED display of the master controller card only. If an individual channel pair has level above its threshold, that card will individually reduce its gain, and only then will gain reduction be indicated on its LED display. If the system is presented with only L and R, for example, the gain displayed will be the reverse of usual, with the master controller card showing no gain reduction, and the L/R card showing about half-scale. The OUTPUT LEVEL controls of the L/R, C/LFE and Ls/Rs cards control only their individual AGC thresholds, so they will affect output level only when the input is high enough to cause individual gain control action. The range is +/- 3dB. These controls are calibrated at the factory. It is suggested that no adjustments be made to these output controls, and volume adjusted with the DTV encoder dialog settings. (The C/LFE threshold is intentionally set 3 db higher than the other channel pairs.) The Input Level control on the master controller card actually affects the drive to its control circuitry from the six surround channels. If set to maximum, it will cause control of the channel pair gains to be exclusively from the master controller card, with individual channel pair cards rarely exerting independent control. This will absolutely lock the surround image at the expense of occasional audible gain changes, and lower overall output level. At the minimum control extreme, there will be less drive to the master controller, and more individual gain decisions made by the channel-pair cards. This gives a more open sound, but can alter the surround image. We recommend leaving it at the factory-set setting, which we believe to be a good compromise between the aforementioned extremes. With this setting, there will be only occasional independent gain changes. The master controller will show the most gain reduction activity. The LED gain displays on the individual channel-pair cards will show only occasional downward movement, along with frequent gain freezes, as indicated by the blue Gate LED s being lit. The output level control on the master controller card only affects the output level of the stereo downmix. We recommend leaving it as set at the factory,(-20 dbfs ) and adjusting on-air loudness via the DTV audio encoder dialog settings. With the stereo downmix we also recommend a setting of -24 on DTV audio encoders as a starting point. Nominal digital output level is -20 dbfs. (The output level jumpers JP1 and JP2 affect only the analog monitor/line outputs). 4.0 STEREO DOWNMIX CONNECTION: A stereo downmix AES3-id signal is available on the "Master" control card. The master control card also has an analog Left and Right stereo downmix output available on its screw terminals. DLM471S.ISB PAGE 5 OF 8
For analog interconnection, refer to the connector block graphics on the PC board and connect the equipment to be fed to the left and right outputs. Make sure that Hi or (+) connects to TIP, and LO or (-) connects to RING at both outputs. A reversal of polarity will cause cancellation of any center or monaural signal. Connect shields to G at one end only. Observe correct polarity. The output level control on the master controller card affects only the output level of the stereo downmix. We recommend leaving it as set at the factory,(-20 dbfs ) and adjusting on-air loudness via the DTV audio encoder dialog settings. With the stereo downmix, we also recommend a dialog normalization setting of -24 on DTV audio encoders as a starting point. Nominal digital output level is -20 dbfs. (The output level jumpers JP1 and JP2 affect only the analog monitor/line outputs). The downmix from the master controller card can be locked to incoming AES via external wordclock, an AES signal, or by connecting with a BNC tee from any of the 3 channel pairs. JP3 (DAC MUTE) should be ON, preventing any audio present on the reference input from being passed through to the downmix output. (DAC muting is indicated by illumination of the red LED near JP3.) Alternatively, the downmix output from the master controller card can be set to its own crystal-generated rate, regardless of the sixchannel AES rate, with JP3 on either the 44.1 or 48 khz position, and no digital reference input connected. The unit is shipped with JP3 OFF, assuming use of an external reference connected to the master control card AES input. If no reference is connected, JP3 must be set to the desired sample rate. There will be no stereo downmix digital output from the master controller card unless a reference is connected to its AES input, or JP3 is set. 5.0 ANALOG CONNECTION AND SETUP Analog outputs are available for the six surround channels and the stereo downmix. If using an analog output, configure the Left and Right output level jumpers JP1 and JP2 for the desired analog nominal output level. (The jumpers are set for +4 dbu output as shipped.) The output level jumpers only affect the analog monitor/line outputs. The analog outputs are high quality, and are always active even when the unit is connected digital in and digital out, so they can be used for monitoring or feeding additional equipment. Audio connections to the unit are made with a removable screw terminal connector block at the rear of the unit. For ease of connection, unplug the connector block, connect the wiring, and plug the block back into the unit. Connect the wiring by inserting stripped wires into the appropriate holes in the connector block, and secure them by tightening the screws on top. PUSH FIRMLY ON THE CONNECTOR BLOCK TO "SNAP" IT INTO PLACE on the PC Board. Refer to the connector graphics silkscreened on the PC CARD. DLM471S.ISB PAGE 6 OF 8
From DLM471 output to a BALANCED input: Output TIP to TIP, (+) or HI Output RING to RING, (-) or LO "GND" - Connect the shield at DLM471 only. From DLM471 output to an UNBALANCED input: Output TIP to center conductor "GND" to shield The outputs are low-impedance, active balanced, and are capable of driving loads of 600 Ohms and higher with low distortion. 6.0 CONFIGURATION JUMPER OPTIONS WIDEBAND CONTROL, JP4, JP5 With wideband control (JP4, JP5 jumpers ON), the unit responds to all frequencies equally, but high levels of low frequencies can cause pumping. With jumpers JP4 and JP5 OFF, there is less control response to low frequencies that could cause pumping with heavy Bass. JP4 and JP5 "OFF" is recommended for best sound quality. DYNAMIC THRESHOLD DEFEAT, JP6 With Dynamic Threshold Defeat jumper JP6 "OFF", the leveled output will increase 1 db over the entire control range, with the increase flattening out near 0 db gain. This very slight increase makes the gain control more natural-sounding. Jumper JP6 ON creates an infinite compression ratio. Steadystate audio is output at the same level thru the entire control range. JP6 "OFF" is recommended for more natural sound. DAC MUTE, JP8 The DAC MUTE jumper JP8 ON mutes the audio decoded from the digital input. (DAC muting is indicated by illumination of the red LED near JP3.) This is necessary when a card is used with an analog input, but locked to an external digital audio source used as a reference, connected to the AES digital input. This jumper is normally OFF. (On the Master controller card, JP8 is ON, so digital audio used as a reference is not passed through to the output.) ADC SAMPLE RATE, JP3 Normally OFF, since the sample rate is locked to the incoming AES rate. If used as an analog-to-digital converter, (generating its own clock), select the desired crystal-generated sample rate of 44.1 or 48 khz. DLM471S.ISB PAGE 7 OF 8
7.0 MAINTENANCE No routine maintenance or adjustment is required. If a problem develops, please contact the factory. It is strongly recommended that if servicing is necessary, that the unit be sent to the factory for any adjustment or repair. Most circuit board modules have several adjustments that are carefully factory set with precision instruments for optimum performance. Some controls when misadjusted produce little change under "normal" operating conditions, but can seriously reduce the ability of the unit to function correctly under other conditions that may be encountered. 8.0 SPECIFICATIONS INPUT Digital format AES-3id or S/PDIF Sample Rate 44.1KHz or 48KHz (crystal selected or automatically locked to input source) Impedance (Digital) 75 Ohm (unbalanced) Digital connector BNC (female) transformer-isolated CONTROL SYSTEM Audio control range Gate Distortion Signal-To-Noise Input Level >32 db Program-dependent gain hold < %THD -95 db, A-weighted, typical Front-panel adjustable OUTPUT Digital format Sample Rate Impedance (digital) Digital connector Analog level (field select) Analog Connector AES-3id (1V P-P) 44.1KHz or 48KHz (Auto or Select) 75 Ohm (Unbalanced) BNC (female) transformer-isolated -4, 0, +4dBu (-10dBu unbalanced) Removable screw terminal METERING Gain Gate Digital signal lock Ten-segment front-panel LED meter Front-panel blue LED Rear card-edge green LED MECHANICAL Card size Racking configuration Power requirement 10.50"L x 5.00"H x 1.20"D 4 of 9 spaces in RMS400 (3 RU) +/-12 VDC, 150mA (RMS-400) DLM471S.ISB PAGE 8 OF 8
