RT/E/C/11213 Page 2 of 10 RAILTRACK LINE CODE OF PRACTICE SUMMARY This Code of Practice defines alternative equivalent cables from current specifications, which may be used to replace older sized cables shown on the design record, during cable renewals, and satisfy the mandatory requirements for non-conceptual design given in RT/E/S/ ISSUE/REVISION RECORD This Code of Practice will be updated when necessary by the distribution of the complete document. Amendments will be marked by a vertical black line in the adjacent right hand margin. Issue Date Comments New Document IMPLEMENTATION This Railtrack Line Code of Practice replaces Railway Group Standard GK/RT0213 for implementation from 7 October Where the guidance given in this Code of Practice is not used, equivalent procedures should be followed that give the same level of safety integrity, are capable of being audited and have been agreed with the Infrastructure Controller. 6 RAILTRACK LINE CODE OF PRACTICE RT/E/C/11213 Page 5 of 10 1 PURPOSE This Code of Practice authorises the use of cables to RT/E/PS/00005 or GS/ES0872 as alternatives to BR 872 and older imperial sized cables which are shown on the design record. This is in order to eliminate the need to specially order obsolete types of cable where there is an equivalent in the current RT/E/PS/00005 range. 2 SCOPE This Code of Practice applies to all cases where the existing design specifies an obsolete cable size/type for which there is an equivalent in the current RT/E/PS/00005 range. 3 DEFINITIONS Technical definitions are provided in RT/E/G/ INTRODUCTION When renewal of cables is necessary previous cable sizes should be replaced with the nearest equivalent cable from the RT/E/PS/00005 or GS/ES0872 range using Table 2 or Table 3 as appropriate. Where the type shown in the table does not directly respond to the previous type the conversion is shown in Table 1. Note that the cable types specified in GS/ES0872, which replaced BR 872 in 1993, are very similar to those of the current specification, RT/E/PS/ In the remainder of this code of practice, reference to RT/E/PS/00005 should also be taken to include GS/ES PROCEDURE All new and altered design work should show the use of cables in accordance with RT/E/PS/ Where it is necessary to replace cables during installation, maintenance or faulting and no stock of the cable shown on the design record is available, this may be done on the authority of this Code of Practice by using the equivalents listed in the tables below.

RT/E/C/11213 Page 6 of 10 RAILTRACK LINE CODE OF PRACTICE It should not be necessary to consult the Design Authority for prior alteration to the wiring diagrams where the circumstances exactly match those covered in this Code of Practice. In some cases, indicated in the tables below, although guidance is given, the appropriate Design Authority should be consulted. Where the type and size of the cable to be replaced is not listed below, then the appropriate Design Authority should be consulted. In all cases of on track equipment and other situations subject to similar levels of vibration, Type C (or E) cable should be used. Where their particular fire performance characteristics have been specified (e.g. ZHLS - Zero Halogen Low Smoke), cable types D and E should be used in lieu of Types B and C respectively. The replacement cable should have a number of cores equal to or greater than that specified on site diagrams. Any spare cores should either be terminated in accordance with the site wiring diagrams, or insulated in accordance with RT/E/C/11210, Appendix 1D20. Five core cable to type MD3 (or D3) was originally specified for emergency replacement use only and this therefore does not come within the scope of this instruction. Where necessary for particular identification purposes, the replacement cable should be of an appropriate colour. Alternatively, coloured sleeves of a suitable material, may be used to mark the cable in appropriate places. Cable to RT/E/PS/00005 is 650/1100 V rated and is therefore suitable for use in all existing railway signalling cable applications. Prior to the August 1986 issue of BR 872, when cable types A, B and C were introduced, cable types were referred to differently. On some diagrams, cables may still be identified in the previous way, and the current equivalents of these are shown in Table 1. Pre-1986 Cable Types *1 MC1 MC2 MD1 Cable Types in RT/E/PS/00005 A1 A2 B1 Notes MD2 B2, A3 *2 MF1 C1 *3 MF2 C2 *3 Table 1 Cable Type Conversion

RAILTRACK LINE CODE OF PRACTICE RT/E/C/11213 Page 7 of 10 *1 The M in Pre Cable Types denotes metric size and therefore pre 1970 descriptions may exclude this (e.g. C2, F1 etc.). *2 A3 cable provides a suitable alternative for internal or otherwise mechanically protected cable installation. *3 Type C cable is suitable for tail cable use, having a very heavy duty construction, and can therefore replace wire armoured type F cable that was used for these applications. Type C cable however is not suitable for long term direct burial and may therefore not be a suitable replacement for all armoured cable applications (e.g. type G brass taped cables). Table 2 (which follows) shows the equivalent cable sizes for converting former BR 872 cables to RT/E/PS/00005 cable. For example, 2 core 50/0.25mm type C2 BR 872 cable should be replaced with a 2 core 2.5mm 2 (f) type C2 RT/E/PS/00005 cable. Note: In some instances equivalent replacement cables to RT/E/PS/00005 may require terminations and cable jointing kits etc. which are different to the old cable.

In the case of older Level Crossing Flashing Road Signals, which have cable entries of insufficient size to accommodate this cable, 1.5mm 2 Type B2 cable should be used within the post. The 1.5mm 2 cable should be through jointed to the 2.5mm 2 (f) cable at a convenient point as near as practicable to the base of the post such that the length of 1.5mm 2 cable is minimised (where circumstances permit, a disconnection box may be provided in lieu of the through joint). See also #2 (below). For all other applications, except where prior agreement of the Design Authority has been received, 2.5mm 2 cable should be used. In most cases, since the 1/1.53mm cable has a conductor area of 1.85mm 2, it may with the agreement of the Design Authority be replaced by 1.5mm 2 cable to RT/E/PS/ #2 2.5mm 2 (f) is the standard notation to be used for flexible 2.5mm 2 cable which should be used for tail cables and for to wiring lineside and track mounted equipment.

RAILTRACK LINE CODE OF PRACTICE RT/E/C/11213 Page 9 of 10 #3 The direct replacement for 7/1.70mm type B2 or D2 is 16mm 2 type B2 or D2, but any single core 7/1.70mm type B1 or D1 should be replaced with 35mm 2 type B1 or D1. The Design Authority may agree a smaller cable size or alternative type. 6 RECORDS In all cases where a cable size/type is changed by the application of this Code of Practice, the site diagrams and other local records should immediately be marked to indicate the up to date situation, with the alteration being dated and signed. The Design Authority should be advised of the change within 48 hours of its commissioning. The master records should be brought into line within a timescale as determined by the Infrastructure Controller, but not later than the next occasion that a design alteration takes place or a correlation exercise is undertaken.

RAILTRACK BRIEFING DOCUMENT FOR RAILTRACK LINE CODE OF PRACTICE RT/E/C/11213 SIGNALLING CABLE EQUIVALENT SIZES 1. BACKGROUND This is one in a suite of signalling documents that are being transferred from Railtrack Safety and Standards Directorate to become Railtrack Line Standards. The reason for the transfer is that these documents are no longer perceived as setting the primary safety-related or high level process requirements necessary for a Railway Group Standard, but rather detailed requirements that may be dependent on specific technology or architecture. 2. LEVEL OF COMPLIANCE The requirements of this Code of Practice are mandated by RT/E/S/ Where the requirements given in this Code of Practice are not complied with an application for authority for non-compliance shall be sought against RT/E/S/ The procedure for submitting such applications is detailed in RT/LS/P/001. Alternative proposals shall deliver the same or better level of safety integrity. 3. CHANGES FROM GK/RT0213 Changes are sidelined in the text. Apart from minor correction and clarification, and the updating of references, no significant changes have been incorporated. As the new cable specification, RT/E/PS/00005, has not required a change to cable types, it has been treated as equivalent to the previous specification, GS/ES IMPLEMENTATION This Railtrack Line Code of Practice replaces Railway Group Standard GK/RT0213 for implementation from 7 October 2000.
