1 Technical Theatre Final Project The Final Project Congratulations It s the last project of the year! At this point you have learned everything you need to know about Technical Theatre and Design. This next project will consist of many deadlines that will represent the same time environment that a real Theatre Company would have. Your task is to take the assigned plays and create a theoretical production design. You will then have to present your design to a Producer, aka ME, who you will need to persuade to fund your show. You will choose the following Production Jobs: -Director -Stage Manager -Costume Designer -Lighting Designer -Sound Designer -Set Designer *note some individuals will have to do be more than one of the roles. Deadlines Because I am giving you these deadlines before we start the project, I am expecting you to plan accordingly, and be working on all that you have to during the time we have in class and even outside of class. I will set up reminders for when certain items are due, but you are responsible for meeting these deadlines. The Deadlines are as follows:

2 Assignment In-Class Due Date Script Analysis May 2 nd Production/Design Concept Sketches/Cue Sheets Renderings/Lighting Plot/Sound Samples/Calling Script Paper Scale Model/Production Meeting Notes/All Final Designs -One(1) script analysis for each group(all) -One(1) notated script with Designers Notes(All) -1 st Production Meeting should have taken place. -One(1) written paragraph that will detail your design concept as a whole (Director) -Four(4) more additional paragraphs from each designer with their detailed design concepts (Lights, Sound, Costume, Set) -2 nd Production Meeting should have taken place. -All Sketches should be finished (Set & Costumes) -All cue sheets should be finished (Lights & Sound) -3 rd Production Meeting should have taken place. -Renderings should be drawn and outlined, not yet colored but started. (Set & Costumes) -Lighting Plot should be planned out and finished(lights) -Sound Cues should be researched and collected, almost ready to write to CD(Sound) -Calling Script should be finished since your designers cue sheets were due the 16 th (Stage Manager) -4 th and Final Production Meeting should have taken place. -Paper Scale Model should be finished(set) -Colored Rendering with swatches are due (Costumes) -Sound CD should have all your effects and cues on it (Sound) -Lighting Plot should be finished and completed (Lights) May 13 th May 16 th May 23 th May 28th

3 Presentation -Start to Rehearse your Presentation and plan out who will say what when (Director) -Show Bible/Binder should be completed and hold all of the above assignment and then some (Stage Manager) We will take turns presenting your designs and concepts to the class and myself. -Be prepared to answer questions from me or your peers. -I will give you your final project grade on June 5 th. June 2-3th Designer s Jobs The DIRECTOR will help lead the group, this does not mean they will do all of the work and be a dictator. The director will help make sure all of the designer s ideas are consistent with the overall Design Concept. The director should be the one who knows the script the best and will work closely with the Stage Manger. (In case there are not enough people the group it would be best for the Director to also be the Stage Manager.) -Design Concept -Script Analysis -Lead in the Final Presentation The STAGE MANAGER will ensure the group meets all of their deadlines. The stage manager will make sure all of the designers are communicating with the director and each other and be responsible for the SHOW BIBLE/BINDER. They will be responsible for a Calling Script, Production Meeting Notes and the organization of the Final Presentation. (In case there are not enough people the group it would be best for the Stage Manager to also be the Director.) -Production Meeting Notes -Calling Script -Organizing the Final Presentation -Putting together the SHOW BIBLE/BINDER

4 The LIGHTING DESIGNER will read the script from a lighting perspective. The designer will notice any time/season changes or lighting cues that are specified in the script, as well any artistic choices. The Lighting Designer will be working closely with the Stage Manager to make sure all the cues are properly notated, and should communicate to the Sound Designer to discuss specific cues that may need to be called at the same time such as thunder, lighting or transitions. (In case there are not enough people in the group it would be best for the Lighting Designer to also be the Set Designer.) -Lighting Concept -Lighting Cue Sheet -Lighting Plot The SOUND DESIGNER will read the script from a sound perspective. The designer will notice any sound cues that are specified in the script sound effects, transition music, pre-show and post-show music, as well as any artistic choices. The Sound Designer will be working closely with the Stage Manager to make sure all the cues are properly notated, and should communicate to the Lighting Designer to discuss specific cues that may need to be called at the same time such as thunder, lighting or transitions. (In case there are not enough people in the group it would be best for the Sound Designer to also be the Costume Designer.) -Sound Concept -Sound Cue Sheet -Sound Cues on CD The COSTUME DESIGNER will read the script from a costume perspective. The designer will notice any costumes that are specified in the script and use their own research and artistic approach to the characters. The Costume Designer will be working closely with the Director to make sure both have a clear understanding of the characters. (In case there are not enough people in the group it would be best for the Costume Designer to also be the Sound Designer.) -Costume Concept -Sketches for five(5) characters -Three(3) Colored Renderings with Swatches

5 The SET DESIGNER will read the script from a set perspective. The designer will notice any set changes that occur during the show or any specific scenic features that are mentioned in the script. The Scenic Designer will be working closely with the Director and Lighting Designer to make sure both have a clear understanding of the overall look of the play. (In case there are not enough people in the group it would be best for the Set Designer to also be the Lighting Designer.) -Scenic Concept -Sketches for All Set Locations (*note: some shows have more locations than others) -One Colored Rendering -A paper Scale Model of one Scenic Location Final Presentation I will act as your Producer that has money to give you. Your goal is to impress/persuade me to produce your show. Your Production Team, aka your groups, will present your ideas and concepts to me and the class. Make sure you rehearse your presentation for that will be part of your final grade as well. Even though your Directors will lead the Presentation, every Designer should have equal Presentation time. You have a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 20 minutes to present. Your Show BIBLE/BINDER will be turned in after your presentation. Grading Rubric You will be graded on the amount of effort and energy you put into this project. The final score will have a lot to do with meeting deadlines. For every day you miss the deadline that will be an automatic -1 point on that particular item; for example, if you turn in the Sound Cue Sheet May 20 th when it was due May 16 th the most points you can get on that item will be 4, because it is considered two days late. Therefore -2 points. The total possible score each group can receive is 100! The next page is an example of the rubric that will be attached with your project along with notes and suggestions. I will make myself available as much as possible to assist after and before school. It is your responsibility to schedule a meeting.
