6 RELIEF WITH LINE-WIDTH MODULATION Relief refers to lines that are altered to create the impression of an image projecting and receding from the page. This relief also demonstrates line-width modulation, shown here as dashed lines in varying lengths. The lines producing the impression can be straight, wavy or radial. In this example, the lines contain the 3M logo and a coat of arms. 5 security features: front

7 ARTISTIC SCREEN An artistic screen is made up of several printed security features (e.g., microtext, geometric shapes, Guilloche) integrated in the background design of a page. security features: front 6

8 NEGATIVE MICROTEXT WITH RAINBOW printing Rainbow printing allows a single unit to print multiple colors simultaneously through controlled merging. In negative microtext printing, the words are reversed out. In this example, the size, gap and tilt of the text continually change. 7 security features: front

9 POSITIVE MICROTEXT Microtext is made up of very small letters or numbers that are barely perceptible to the eye. In this example, the printed microtext increases in font size and varies in direction to create a design element. security features: front 8

10 Multiple-COLOR LINEWORK Multiple-color linework refers to a series of complex, overlapping geometric patterns made up of fine lines printed in multiple colors. 9 security features: front

14 GEOMETRIC PATTERNS Geometric patterns can be designed to incorporate different line widths and spacing. In this example, the distance between the lines is modulated. 13 security features: BACK

15 microtext Microtext is made up of very small letters or numbers that are barely perceptible to the eye. In this example, the size of the text and the gaps between letters change to form the 3M logo. An intentional type error, such as a misspelling, can be included within a certain area of the microtext as a covert security feature. security features: BACK 14

16 two-color guilloche printing When continuous fine lines are arranged in geometric patterns, it is called Guilloche printing. In this example, dash and line-width modulation are used to create the two-color Guilloche background. 15 security features: BACK
