3 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Cole-Parmer series flat-bed module recorder. This recorder is potentiometric, with null balance providing a permanent, graphic record of an input signal. Use this recorder for a variety of applications; educational, laboratory and industrial. Measure DC voltage, current, temperature, ph, pressure, displacement and other variables if you use the plug-in signal conditioning modules. CAUTION SENSITIVE ELECTRONIC DEVICES DO NOT SHIP OR STORE NEAR STRONG ELECTROSTATIC, ELECTROMAGNETIC, MAGNETIC OR RADIOACTIVE FIELDS Power Requirements Recorders are shipped ready to operate with 115 VAC, 60 Hz power pack or 220 VAC, 50 Hz power pack. Contact Cole-Parmer for more information. Chart Paper Installation See Figure 1: Front Panel Control Locations. 1. Lift top cover latch and raise top of recorder Remove paper feed spool from inside of the recorder. 3. Hold paper roll with free end toward you; printed grid UP. Insert paper feed spool from left end through paper roll. 4. Replace roll in recorder, feed end of paper under paper tear-off bar and align sprocket holes in paper with teeth on sprockets. 5. Close and latch top cover. Make sure paper is aligned squarely with the tear-off bar and properly positioned on the sprocket teeth. Cole-Parmer Reg TM Cole Parmer Instrument Company 3

5 TITLE RIGHT Pen Installation 1. With the pen holder(s) in the UP position, remove the cap from a short nib pen and slide pen into the holder as far as possible. 2. On two pen models, insert a long nib pen into the upper pen holder in the same manner. Make sure the pens do not interfere. Grounding See Figure 2: Rear Panel. For best performance, the power pack and signal source must share a common EARTH ground. The ground wire in the power pack is connected to the recorder chassis ground ( ) but not to the signal input negative (-). If the signal input source does not have a third wire in the power cord, or if the recorder is not grounded, connect a wire between the recorder chassis ground terminal ( ) and the chassis of the signal source. In case of large normal-mode signals, particularly 120 Hz, connect the recorder chassis ground terminal ( ) to the normal-mode signal source. Input Signal Connections See the Operating Manual included with the module(s) you use with your recorder. Caution Do not install or remove plug-in modules when power is ON; you will damage the recorder. Recording Procedures See Figures 1 and Make sure the power switch is OFF (UP position). Connect the power pack to the DIN connector in the rear of the recorder. Plug the other end of the power pack into 115 VAC, 60 Hz source. 2. With the chart paper and pen(s) installed, follow the instructions included with the module(s) you are using with the recorder. 5

6 Special Features Override Event Marker Standard Produces approximately a +2% SPIKE in the analog trace when a contact closure is made between EVENT and - (signal ground). Paper Tear-Off Bar Standard Removable clear plastic tear-off bar: To remove: : Pull snap-lock up; lift end of bar and remove tab from slot ,-60: Pull snap locks up at ends of bar and remove. Install: : Insert tab in slot; lower bar; align snaplock with hole and press into place , -60 Align snap locks with holes and press into place. Auxiliary Battery Pack Allows complete operation of the recorder for approximately 5 to 8 hours without AC power. Batteries recharge when unit is connected to AC power. (Recorder POWER switch does NOT need to be ON.) Batteries are inside the recorder chassis. Set Point Alarms Provides a contact closure or break when the input signal exceeds a high or low set point level. Each point, high or low, is adjustable over the entire chart range. See instructions supplied when set point alarms are installed. Chart Fast Advance Advances paper at highest speed (30 cm/min) when you hold down the CHART FEED switch. CHART switch does NOT need to be ON. 6

7 General Theory See Figure 3: General Theory Block Diagram. The input signal is conditioned by the plug-in module. It is then applied to the pulse servo amplifier which continuously compares it to the feedback signal developed by the servo potentiometer. The difference between these two signals is a positive or negative error signal. The signal is amplified and used to drive the servo motor, coupled to the servo potentiometer. The servo motor turns, reducing the error signal to zero. Since the recorder pen is mechanically coupled to the servo motor and servo potentiometer, its position on the chart represents an accurate and continuous record of the input signal (see Figure 3). Pen Drive System A DC servo motor controls the servo potentiometer and Figure 3: General Theory Block Diagram 7

8 recorder pen with a gear driven servo drum assembly. The pen is attached to a drive cable that is wrapped around a secured drum. As the drum rotates, the pen is moved across the chart in proportion to the amount of drum rotation. Chart Drive System An internal oscillator generates pulses that are divided by integrated circuit logic. The chart speed switch selects the appropriate pulse rate to drive the stepper motor at the desired speed. The oscillator frequency is not a function of line frequency; therefore chart speeds are completely independent. DC Power Supply AC line voltage is reduced to 12 VAC by a stepdown transformer in the power pack and converted to DC by solid state rectifiers and regulators in the recorder. A stable DC voltage, generated by a voltage reference integrated circuit, is used as a reference for the servo potentiometer. Figure 4: Calibration Control Locations (Front) 8

9 Note Follow this procedure for a single pen recorder. Calibration of dual channel models is identical except procedure must be duplicated for the second channel. Caution Do not install or remove plug-in modules when powered; you will seriously damage the recorder. Calibration Power Supplies Power supplies and chart drive systems do not need calibration. Chart Drive System The chart drive system requires no calibration. Pen Drive System The calibration must be performed by a qualified technician.the technician must be aware of voltages that can produce an electrical shock. Equipment Required No special equipment is required unless a module is not installed in each channel of the recorder. If modules are not available, contact Cole-Parmer for information. Preliminary Set-up See Figure 1 and Turn the recorder POWER switch to OFF (UP position). 2. Set CHART SPEED switch to 10 cm/min. 3. Set CHART switch to OFF (UP position). 4. Install paper and pen(s) if not preciously done. 5. Connect power pack to the rear of the recorder (DIN connector). Connect the other end to 115 VAC, 60 Hz source. 6. Turn the recorder POWER switch ON (DOWN position). 7. Warm up the recorder for 20 minutes prior to calibration. 9

10 Gain See Figure 4. The gain adjustment controls the servo loop gain of the recorder. If set too high, the pen buzzes. If set too low, the pen is sluggish. 1. Check that the pen is in the DOWN position and CHART is ON (DOWN position). 2. Zero pen to approximately mid-scale. (Use the module zero control or input a signal to move the pen away from zero.) 3. Adjust GAIN control clockwise (CW) until the pen buzzes then turn back counter-clockwise (CCW) until the buzzing stops plus 1/8 turn. Zero Trim See Figure 4. Adjusts the servo (pen) to ZERO with a zero input signal. Set pen to ZERO grid line using ZERO TRIM control (short) input to the recorder. If the recorder has a zero control, it is not necessary to adjust the zero trim. Span See Figure 4. Adjusts a calibrated full scale input signal that moves the pen the full width of the chart. The span fine tunes the full scale output of a module. The span is set at the factory full scale to read with 100 mv into the servo amplifier. If the span should require calibration, contact Cole-Parmer. Upper Limit See Figure 4. Provides electronic shutdown of the pen drive when an overrange condition exists. 1. Adjust pen to the right (full scale) as far as possible using the ZERO control, then turn slightly more or input an overrange signal. 2. Position the pen half-way between the left edge of the chart grid and sprocket holes using the UPPER limit control. 10

11 Lower Limit See Figure 4. Provides electronic shutdown of the pen drive when an underrange condition exists. 1. Adjust the pen to the left (ZERO) as far as possible using the ZERO control then turn slightly more or input a negative signal. 2. Position the pen halfway between the right edge of the chart grid and sprocket holes using the LOWER LIMIT control. Calibration of the mainframe is complete. 11

If repair or adjustment is necessary and has not been the result of abuse or misuse within the one year period, please return freight prepaid and correction will be made without charge. Cole-Parmer alone will determine if the product problem is due to deviations or customer misuse. Out-of-warranty products will be repaired on a charge basis. Return of Items Authorization must be obtained from our Customer Satisfaction Department before returning items for any reason. When applying for authorization, please include data regarding the items are to be returned. For your protection, items must be carefully packed to prevent damage in shipment and insured against possible damage or loss. Cole-Parmer will not be responsible for damage resulting from careless or insufficient packing. A restocking charge will be made on all unauthorized returns.
