Chemical synapses allow neurons to form circuits within the central nervous system. They are crucial to the biological computations that underlie perception and thought. They allow the nervous system to connect to and control other systems of the body. (source Wikipedia.org) The image on the left is an illustration of the major elements in chemical synaptic transmission. An electrochemical wave called an action potential travels along the axon of a neuron. When the wave reaches a synapse, it provokes release of a puff of neurotransmitter molecules, which bind to chemical receptor molecules located in the membrane of another neuron, on the opposite side of the synapse. AXON s core When Axon started back in 1987, it was what you would call a small, engineering-driven company. The relatively new SD-SDI stream was our main focus in the early 90s which proved to be a good choice. Now, with customers and major installations at key sites worldwide and over ten times as many employees a lot has changed. Fortunately a lot has stayed the same. We are still as enthusiastic, technology- conscious and quality-driven as we were back then it s in our genes. We call it AXON s DNA. Our future focus is to remain true to our heritage. What else can we do but strive to develop, design and build great products that help our customers to grow their business operations? Synapse has become a very powerful and mature system. With several hundred modules to choose from, controlled and maintained by probably the most powerful, and intuitive free software package available today called Cortex. 3rd party technologies have been modularized and included in our single form factor approach, like Dolby, Linear Acoustic, Jünger, Soundfield and Kantar Media. The system is packed with new features again like our in-house developed Ethernet core (ANCORE) which allows full integration with Ethernet based infrastructures. We also offer flexible upgrade paths all the way to UHD (4K) helping you to protect your investment and lowering cost of ownership when standards evolve again. The next pages describe the basics of what often call the best modular broadcast system in our industry. For all individual modules please refer to the separate Synapse the modules catalog. 2 3

4 Introduction Synapse is a modular system containing multiple 19 frames, active hot swappable cards and (mostly) passive connector panels. It is designed to support demanding mission critical applications in the broadcast industry. Although Synapse has a unique approach and is unequalled in its flexibility you could position the system in what the industry calls glue, infrastructure equipment, terminal gear or just modular equipment. The system explained Synapse is unique and very flexible but its basic core and construction adheres to a simple design concept. A brief technical description of the basic elements and how they are constructed: The processing cards connect directly into the frame via a high density connector that powers the cards with a single voltage supplied by a hot swappable (dual redundant) power supply. The single rail of a relativity high 30V DC ensures stable operation and low supply currents that ensures high efficiency in the supply and its distribution rail. All voltages that are needed on the active modules, including +5V, +3.3V, +2.5V, +1.8V even 1.5V and +/-15V are derived from the main supply voltage with local switched mode regulators. These local regulators ensure stable, low noise, local supply high voltages and inter card isolation. The size of the Synapse card and the connector panel is the result of several design criteria that were defined in the original design. Today we are very happy that we have this fairly large PCB in order to maximize the processing power requested by modern broadcast infrastructures. Synapse frames offer more than just a housing that hold different processing modules. They are unique intelligent systems that form the foundation of extremely flexible building blocks. These building blocks (almost 300 different plug-in processing modules) range from simple functions like a distribution amplifier to cards that perform a massive array of functions in a single slot, previously only possible with multiple cascaded cards. 4 5

5 Lowest cost of ownership and future proof Synapse has various unique features that ensure a good return on investment and many years of trouble free operation with the inherent versatility to adapt to changes in this constantly moving industry. Single form factor Moving cards between all frames, never restricted by variable frame dimensions, protecting your investment for future (re) use and ensuring compatibility with the total infrastructure. Single slot functions (single width I/O panels) with massive processing power This means dividing your card count by 18 or 8 to calculate the amount of 4RU or 2RU frames. There are two exception in Synapse: the long time delay cards, which consists of one processing board and one board containing the solid state disk, and the power of the multiviewer cards limit the possible processing cards to 12 in an SFR18. Ethernet is part of the frame No loss of rack space if you need to connect the frames to your control, monitoring and setup network as the rack controller is a standard feature of the frame at no additional cost. Single form factor Synapse is based on a single form factor. This is important as it will protect your investment and ensures inter frame swapping when systems change or the infrastructure is dynamic (as in OB-vans). All cards sold today can fit in a frame first sold in 2001, and every card sold from day one will fit in a frame bought today. This is protection of your investment and lowers cost of ownership when things change. Thanks to the front card rear connector panel construction Synapse can use different connectors between the front and the back. It is not limited to a single connector model and therefore the RD team of AXON can make selections that best suit the performance needed. On page 10 you can see examples of 96-pin D41612 connectors, 4-coax+64 pin D41612, 8-coax, the 90 degree angled PCIe connector and we also introduced a 300 pin Searay connector. This single form factor is used in 2 frame options: SFR18 4RU 18 slots Synapse frame with redundant power and dual reference SFR08 2RU 8 slots Synapse frame with redundant power and dual reference Internal reference distribution amplifiers that do not take up an extra slot Offers savings in cabling and savings in space. The frames come with an integrated (dual) reference distribution amplifier. One connection to the frame and all cards are locked to a central reference. Prepared for the future The latest cards are prepared for an Ethernet (IP) based infrastructure, like AVB/TSN, S2022 and ST2110. Also, we developed a wide range of cards to convert to/from and process new formats like ultra HD (4K) Self contained cooling The 2 available Synapse frames are self contained systems where the temperature housekeeping is an integral part of the frame. Unique architecture Internal passive daisy chain (Synapse bus) for enhanced inter-card data transfer such as 64 audio channels or 1080p video in multiview applications. Multiview is an integrated part of Synapse Synapse is the only modular system that has a fully integrated multiview system, called SynView, which can be mixed and matched with all other Synapse processing cards. Modular master control SynMC, a Synapse based modular Master Control System, has a high quality master control and branding processor Free monitoring, control and setup with Cortex Cortex is the Synapse monitoring, control and setup application and free of charge, providing comprehensive configuration, monitoring and maintenance tools in intuïtive graphical user interfaces. 6 Single slot functions and massive processing power The system allows for different I/O panels with different inter connectors between card and I/O panel. Some examples (from top to bottom) Synapse puts more horsepower into a single slot then other vendors in this industry. This has several advantages for the end user: DWC18 with BPL01-96 pins for SD and Audio I/O Less space Lower cost GRB990 with BPH18-4 coax between card and I/O Lower overall power requirements Tighter integration GXG160 with BPX17-8 coax connections and the passive relay bypass option HLD100 with BHX Gb/s capable connections on an angled PCIe connector Illustrated below is an example of our single slot solution: the GED130 All functions in a single form factor with the freedom of using different connectors between the active front card and the rear mounted I/O panel. This single slot module (18 of these can fit into a 4RU frame) has a broad range of functions integrated in a powerful design: 3Gb/s, HD and SD I/O with dual inputs and two outputs De-embedding of 16 channels audio Extracting of s2020 Dolby metadata Dolby E decoder Audio description processing (for the visual impaired) or Dolby Digital (plus) encoding Downmix of 5.1 to 2.0 with Dolby Prologic encoding Preset based shuffling and embedding from up to 50 sources into the 4 group embedder 8 9

7 Single slot functions continued Preset based gain, delay and phase adjustments for the 16 channels prior to embedding Video delay with video standard independent latency for compensating of audio processing delays S2020 insertion for down-stream discrete audio handling Preset based Dolby metadata handling with the choice of extracted s2020, decoded E metadata, external metadata or internal generated metadata The Quad Speed audio bus enables audio processing between the E decoder and Digital (plus) encoder for example loudness control based on Linear Acoustic Algorithms (DLA44) or viewing rates watermarking This example is the result of tight integration of video and audio processing where the card replaces 6 industry available products. Not only do you save on real-estate but also on power. The GED130 uses approximately 15 Watt compared to 40 Watt of its 6 card equivalent. This kind of integration empowers the system integrator to look at his design with a different view. Comparing quotes on spreadsheet level is almost impossible and will not show the savings in cost, space and power (= cost of ownership). The GXT110 combines a full stack of processing modules combined into one card. The combination of functions replaces a full set of conventional cards and due to tight integration they work much better together than is possible with individual functions. 8 Synapse - The system Ethernet comes as a standard feature Synapse can be remote controlled via Axon Control Protocol (ACP). Cortex, Synapse s monitoring and control software, talks this language natively. Also many 3rd party vendors have written drivers for controlling these frames. The beauty of ACP is that it is a single driver protocol. Once you have interfaced to one card you can control any card old or new. The local control panel uses the same path as a remote control, hence contributing to the ease of use of the system. All card settings can be modified and maintained via an intuitive control panel. The menu is an easy to understand tree structure that facilitates safe and fast local control. 9 Internal reference distribution Extensive fiber I/O SFR18 SFR08 Example of our high density fiber I/O module. Optical specifications are identical to the fiber properties. Synapse is equiped with a (double) internal reference distribution system. The dual reference (single on the SFR04) feeds all cards with a connected external reference. The compatible signals are bi-level (Black and Burst), tri-level and wordclock. All Synapse HD and 3Gb/s products that can be locked to a reference can use either a bi-level (for ease of installation in a mixed SD/HD environment) or a tri-level sync. The reference distribution amplifiers are built around a redundant topology with dedicated power supply regulators. This connector panel will fit in any Synapse frame but can also be mounted outside the frame. 10 Integrated cooling Synapse uses a single module form factor with 2 different frame sizes, each of which possesses self-contained cooling systems. The air flow is shown below. Functional groups and color coding of modules The Synapse product groups are color coded for easy recognition between card fronts and I/O panels at the back. SFR08 The SFR08 has its air intake on the right side and outlets for the warm air on the left side of the chassis. It features a front removable fan tray between the two groups of four cards. 11 TWS: smart double density modules Multiple domains in one system Along with the advanced functionality of the existing Synapse modules, we extended the range by providing cards containing dual channel functionality. These cards within the Synapse range are named TWS. TWS is developed to serve two purposes: We do not discriminate when it comes to various standards, formats and domains. Whether you re working with SDI, IP based signals, or even Analog signals, we support many formats with various Synapse modules and they can all reside in the same frame. 12 Internal passive daisy chain (Synapse bus) Synapse has a unique patented daisy chain mechanism that allows signals to flow from one card to the next (or back) without any wiring, connection PCB s or any mechanical switching. The original method for embedding audio involved the cascading of modular products. In the example below you see how this is done. For audio we call this the Synapse system. It was originally developed for single direction audio transfers of up to 16 channels over 4 slots. In early 2010 we developed a new method that would allow 32 audio channel transfer in two directions simultaneously with up to 3 Cards. This bus technology is compatible with all the Synapse frames sold today and is called the Quad Speed audio bus. 14 T A FROM M FRO TO M Synapse - The system EVERY ARROW CONTAS 4 MONO CHANNELS EVERY ARROW CONTAS 32 MONO CHANNELS The Quad Speed audio bus CARD WITH LOOP MASTER CARD WITH NO LOOP In some application the bus is required to carry more than 16 channels of audio (32 per video stream seem possible in the near future). The bus needs to be bidirectional, so this should accomodate all of the channels in a video stream, i.e. 32 channels in, and 32 channels out, at the same time. A quad speed MASTER Card can therefore run 32 channels in either direction (64 channels total) instead of 16 channels in one direction So is cascading of Quad Speed cards identical to normal? Yes. Every connection in the example below transports 16 mono audio channels (= 32 channels per color). This interface needs to be compatible with all existing frames. It occasionally needed to be backward compatible with the original 16 channel bus. Some MASTER Cards will have two operational modes and some MASTER Cards will only have the Quad Speed mode (where the logical Cards are only available in Quad Speed mode): Dual mode MASTER Cards have a menu item to select the appropriate mode. If a mode is selected all Cards to that MASTER need to be in the same mode. 19 Life-time free firmware upgrades Synapse modules are hardware platforms that often run a version of firmware. As our industry evolves we can see new standards evolve and new functions and features find their way into infrastructure requirements. Let s take for example s2016, the HD version (and in some countries SD as well) of VI and WSS. This VANC based data was added to existing products after their introduction. Also subtitle carrige in OP47 and s2020 Dolby metadata were added to existing products, free of charge. Occasionally our customers find a bug, or a missing feature. These will be solved, added and the product is improved. The new firmware is placed on for anybody to use, even if the product is over a decade old. That is lower cost of ownership the Synapse way. Synapse Comes with Cortex: free configuration, monitoring control software Synapse modules are setup and configured by their settings and status items of their internal menu. These settings are always accessible via the front control. Some cards however, like for instance the multiviewer cards and Dolby processing cards, have complex menus and require a graphical user interface to make the modules more intuitive to control and easier to configure. To make Synapse easier to control, it comes with an entirely free-of-charge control and monitoring software application called Cortex. Cortex provides comprehensive configuration, monitoring and maintenance tools for Synapse.
