RoHS Directive concerns with the restrictive use of Hazardous substances (Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, Br compounds) in electric and electronic equipments. Scientech products are Lead Free and Environment Friendly. It is mandatory that service engineers use lead free solder wire and use the soldering irons upto (25 W) that reach a temperature of 450 C at the tip as the melting temperature of the unleaded solder is higher than the leaded solder. 4 Introduction DB17 is a compact, ready to use Event Counter experiment board. This experiment board has been designed to count Number of events (pulses) occurred during specific interval. It consists of 3-digit counter, which is used to count up to 999. It is working in two modes : 1. Normal Count Mode 2. One minute Timer Mode It can be used as ADD-on unit with Scientech biomedical training series for counting no. of pulses occurred in a specific interval or duration. 5 Theory A sequential circuit that goes through a prescribed sequence of states upon the application of input pulses is called a counter. What is a BCD counter? The availability of a large variety of codes for the same discrete elements of information results in the use of different codes by different digital system. It is sometimes necessary to use the output of one system as the input to another. A conversion circuit must be inserted between the two systems if each uses different code for the same information. Thus, a code converter is a circuit that makes the two systems compatible even though each uses a different code. BCD is an abbreviation for binary-coded decimal. Binary codes for decimal digits require a minimum of four bits. The BCD code expresses each digit in a decimal number by its nibble equivalent. Weights are assigned to binary bits according to their positions. The weights in the BCD codes are 8, 4, 2, 1. For example, the bit assignment 0110 can be interpreted by the weights to represent the decimal digit 6 because = 6 A BCD counter has four outputs usually labelled A, B, C, D. By convention A is the least significant bit, or LSB. The easiest way to understand what a BCD counter does is to follow the counting sequence in truth table form: Pulses Output D Output C Output B Output A : : : : : Scientech Technologies Pvt. Ltd. 5

When pulses are delivered to the CLOCK input (and all the other connections needed for basic operation are made), the outputs of the CD4029B follow a sequence starting from up to , the binary equivalent of the decimal number 9. The next pulse causes the CD4029B to RESET and counting starts again from In other words, the counter outputs follow a binary sequence representing the decimal numbers 0-9 this is why the CD4029B is called a binary coded decimal counter. BCD to 7 Segment Decoder : A seven segment decoder /driver is an IC decoder that can be used to drive a seven segment indicator. There are two types of decoder/drivers, corresponding to common anode and common cathode indicators. Each decoder driver has 4 BCD inputs and 7 output pins (a to g segment). Pin connections : Scientech Technologies Pvt. Ltd. 6

The function of a BCD to 7-segment decoder is to convert the logic states at the outputs of a BCD counter into a form that will drive a 7-segment display. The display shows the decimal numbers 0-9 and is easily understood. The individual segments making up a 7-segment display are identified by letters as follows: 7-Segment Display There are two important types of 7-segment LED display. In a common cathode display, the cathodes of all the LEDs are joined together and the individual segments are illuminated by High voltages. In a common anode display, the anodes of all the LEDs are joined together and the individual segments are illuminated by connecting to a Low voltage. The 4511 is designed to drive a common cathode display and won't work with a common anode display. There are two important types of 7-segment LED display. In a common cathode display, the cathodes of all the LEDs are joined together and the individual segments are illuminated by HIGH voltages. In a common anode display, the anodes of all the LEDs are joined together and the individual segments are illuminated by connecting to a Low voltage. The figure 1, figure 2 shows the two displays. Common Cathode : Scientech Technologies Pvt. Ltd. 7

Common Anode : Truth table : When the 4511 is set up correctly, the outputs follow this truth table: BCD inputs Segment Outputs D C B A a b c d e f g Display There is a question about whether the 6's and 9's should have tails. The 4511 produce a display without tails. If other binary values, greater than are connected to the inputs of the 4511, the outputs are all 0's and the display is blank. Scientech Technologies Pvt. Ltd. 8

Panel Control Description Start/Stop toggle switch : This switch starts or stops counting in module. Timer On/Off toggle switch : This switch is used to on/off the One Minute Timer. When it is indicating Timer Off, then module is working normal count mode and it performs counting up to 999.When it is indicating Timer On then module is working One Minute Timer Mode and stops counting after one minute. One minute indicator Reset : LED indication which gives one minute indication. : Push to On switch used to reset the whole system. 3 Digit Display : 3 digits seven segment displays used to indicates no of events (pulses) occurred. Scientech Technologies Pvt. Ltd. 9

Experiment 1 Objective : To study Normal Count Mode (0-999) of Event Counter Equipments Needed : 1. Digital board DB DC Power Supply +5V from external source or ST2611 Digital Lab. 3. Digital Lab ST 2611 or Biomedical Series Trainer (ST 2351/ST 2353). Procedure : 1. Connect +5V and ground to their indicated position on DB17 experiment board from external DC power supply or from DC power block of Digital Lab ST Connect Pulse Generator output of Digital Lab ST2611 to the pulse input of DB Initially the system should be in Reset position (000). 1. Select Start/Stop Toggle switch to stop position. 2. Select Timer On/Off toggle switch to Off position for Normal Counting Mode (0-999). 3. Press Push to ON switch to reset the Display. 4. Switch ON the power supply. 5. To Starts count, push Start/Stop toggle switch in Start Position. Observe decimal output (no. of Pulses Occurred) on seven segment display given on the experiment board. Note : Instead of pulse generator output of ST2611 any other external pulse source or sync pulse output generated in Scientech Biomedical Training series (ST2351/ST2353) can also be given to DB17 to count no. of Pulses/Events Occurred in finite duration. Scientech Technologies Pvt. Ltd. 10

Experiment 2 Objective : To study One Minute Timer Mode of Event Counter Equipments Needed : 1. Digital board DB DC Power Supply +5V from external source or ST2611 Digital Lab. 3. Digital Lab ST 2611 or Biomedical Series Trainer (ST2351 / ST 2353). Procedure : 1. Connect +5V and ground to their indicated position on DB17 experiment board from external DC power supply or from DC power block of Digital Lab ST Connect Pulse Generator output of Digital Lab ST2611 to the pulse input of DB Initially the system should be in Reset position (000). a. Select Start/Stop Toggle switch to stop position. b. Select Timer On/Off toggle switch to Off position. c. Press Push to ON switch to Reset the Display. 4. Switch ON the power supply. 5. To Starts count, push Start/Stop toggle switch in Start Position and Timer On/Off switch in On position. Finally Observe decimal output (no. of Pulses Occurred) on seven segment display given on the experiment board. 6. DB-17 in one minute timer mode, it will start counting up to one minute and then stops counting to indicate No. of pulses or events occurred in one minute duration. Note : Instead of pulse generator output of ST2611 any other external pulse source or sync pulse output generated in Scientech Biomedical Training series (ST 2351/ST2353) can also be given to DB17 to count no. of Pulses /Events Occurred in finite duration.
