2 Effective implementation of visualisation and control tasks Electronic indicating instruments visualise physical signals from measurement sensors. For example, a resistance signal from a temperature sensor is shown in degrees Celsius on the indicating instrument. Electronic controllers are used in applications where it is necessary to reach and maintain a particular level, such as a system temperature. The controller compares the actual measured process value with the desired value and independently generates an output signal that minimises the difference between the setpoint and actual values. A wide variety of visualisation, control and monitoring tasks must be implemented in industrial processes. Even with simple applications, there is often a desire for more functions without large additional expense. The hardware and software are therefore designed to provide a maximum of flexibility. Highperformance microcontrollers with high computing and large memories enable the implementation of customerspecific requirements, so that you can find the optimal solution for your engineering task. 3 Installation situation We offer solutions for various installation situations. ur standard electronic displays and controllers are plugin modules for convenient frontpanel mounting or replacement. We also offer instruments for rail mounting. If indication of setpoint and actual values is not necessary and little space is available for a control task, our blank controllers are the ideal solution. Parameter settings can be configured using a plugin display and control module or a PC. A PC is often designated as the master, but this is not always possible or necessary. An individual instrument can also act as master, with the instruments communicating with each other without a PC. If a setpoint value needs to be changed in such a network, it only needs to be changed in the master and all the slave instruments will follow automatically. This feature offers enormous savings in time and money. Networking Networking of indicating instruments or controllers in a master / slave configuration is very easy using the S 485 serial interface. This involves setting up a twowire bus and using the well known and widely used ModBus protocol for communication. Integration into a higherlevel control system can be implemented very easily with this approach. 163

4 Extensive special functions Programming function Programmable controllers are used in applications where ramps and dwell times have a crucial effect on the quality of the final product. Complex, customised control profiles with various process sequences in a single program can be defined with our controllers. For this purpose, the programming function is divided into eight segments and four groups. The program is started by a un command from a button or an external control contact. Programming adapter The TTL interface facilitates the configuration of instrument parameter settings with the programming adapter. The programming adapter is especially helpful when several instruments have to be configured with identical settings or when various configuration data sets have to be archived and retrieved as necessary. Standalone parameter configuration allows a configuration data set to be transferred directly from the programming adapter to other instruments. The configuration data is initially loaded into the programming adapter from a master controller or a PC where the desired configuration is stored. With PCbased parameter configuration using the software programming tool, the programming adapter acts as a converter between the instrument and the PC. The instrument s parameter data is transferred via the programming adapter directly to the PC and displayed. All parameters are shown in tablular form in the configuration software, and they can be modified. The modified parameters are then written directly back to the instrument. The data can also be saved in the PC, which enables retrieval of various parameter configurations. 164

5 Monitoring functions Monitoring lower and upper limits is often necessary in addition to indication or control functions. A variety of alarm functions are available for this. Programming the relay contact as normally closed (NC) or normally open (N) ensures that the desired behaviour is always obtained and provides a fault indication in the event of failure. Absolute or relative lower and upper limits as well as window alarms enable userprogrammable alarm zones. An alarm signal is generated automatically if process values go outside the monitoring range. If it is necessary to maintain the alarms and continuously indicate an alarm condition that has occurred, or if for safety reasons an additional manual action must occur, alarm memories with acknowledgement by a button or an external contact provide a suitable solution. Some applications need a defined startup phase in order to attain the desired operating state. If it is necessary to prevent false alarms during this phase, startup alarm suppression or an alarm time delay can be programmed. Timer function For some applications, timecontrolled activation of switch outputs is necessary in addition to process parameter monitoring or control. This timer function can be integrated in SIKA controllers with no need to install additional components. That saves space and reduces cost. The on and off times can be programmed in hours, minutes or seconds. In the various operating modes, time control can be started, paused or disabled by a button press or an external control contact. Sensitive touch Some instruments are optionally available with the new sensitive touch buttons for soft touch operation, in place of the standard rubberised buttons. The sensitive touch buttons are based on capacitive touch technology and are actuated by finger contact with the glass front. Along with modern design, the sensitive touch option offers easier cleaning and better moisture and dirt immunity. Special applications can be implemented easily and compactly. 165
