3 USE MOTORS? Inductive motors require a magnetizing current regardless of load, which leads to inefficient use of available power. What can better power factor do for your facility? 4 THE CHALLENGE: PROVIDING REACTIVE COMPENSATION TO INDUCTIVE LOADS CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR UNIQUE APPLICATIONS Simply stated, users expect that 100% of applied power is used for the completion of work. The reality is that not all applied power is converted to work. A portion of the energy is non-productive, used only to create a magnetic field in inductors, motors, and transformers. The creation of the magnetic field requires a certain amount of current and this magnetizing current cannot be used for the operation of the applied motor. Referred to as reactive power, these currents exist within a power system, consuming a portion of the power resource, be it a transformer or generator. The APQ Series Type C Solution Power Factor Correction APQ offers a broad range of reactive compensation solutions designed to meet the needs of your specific application. VAR compensation can be applied at any point on your power system in order to meet your explicit goals. In addition to the standard products available, we also have the ability to customize a solution for your unique situation. Fixed and Automatic Systems When loads are constant, a fixed solution can be applied in order to supply the power factor correction only when the load is powered. Since the corrective bank is only energized when the load is energized, the possibility of over-correcting would be eliminated. Such solutions can be applied at an individual motor or for an entire facility. Since many loads are not constant, APQ also offers automatic solutions that insert or remove VARs based upon load demand. Operating in Harmonic Environments Power factor correction capacitors are a low impedance path for harmonic frequencies if not properly addressed. When applying a power factor correction solution to a power system, harmonic producing loads must be taken into consideration. APQ Series Type F Filter Banks can include a tuned or detuned reactor to protect the capacitors from the damaging effects of harmonic currents. Contact APQ or visit for more information on APQ Series Type F Solutions. MAXIMIZE EXISTING POWER SOURCES Modern manufacturing facilities must be nimble to compete in a global market. Manufacturing lines can be moved or adjusted based on product demand. This changing power demand can often impact the efficiency of the electrical system. A high power factor will ensure existing transformers and generators are being used efficiently. AVAILABLE IN LOW AND MEDIUM VOLTAGE CONFIGURATIONS APQ offers solutions from the smallest motor to facility-wide solutions. Low voltage products (690 volts or less) are available in standard configurations while medium voltage systems (up to 35 kv Class) can be designed specifically for your needs. CUSTOMIZED FOR YOU Every power system is unique and standard products may not always provide the correct solution to the challenges you face. APQ has the ability to conduct a Power Quality study and engineer the right product for your specific needs. kw Power Supply Load kvar kw Power Supply Load kvar PFC Solution When capacitor solutions are applied, the power source no longer needs to provide reactive power for the load 4

7 Determining System kvar Requirements DESIRED POWER FACTOR EXISTING POWER FACTOR In order to determine the correct amount of kvars for a given system, follow these simple steps: 1. Select the desired power factor at the top of the chart. 2. Follow the column down to the row showing the existing power factor of the system. 3. Multiply the system kw by the selected multiplier to determine the amount of kvar necessary to reach the desired power factor

8 Determining the Right Solution for Your Application Fixed, Automatic, or Dynamic? Fixed Fixed solutions are designed for single loads where the operation does not vary often during its normal cycle. The power factor correction unit can be added or removed from the system along with the load. Automatic Automatic solutions are designed for multiple loads or loads that vary up to six times per hour. The applied kvar can be adjusted based upon the load at any given moment during the application s normal cycle. Dynamic Dynamic solutions are designed for loads such as welding applications where the power demand changes rapidly. The kvar requirement can be adjusted immediately based on the power requirements of the load. Harmonic Filtering Required? Type C APQ Series Type C Power Factor Correction Banks are designed for systems that do not have significant harmonic content. If more than 85% of the facility s total load is linear, it is likely that the Type C product is the right choice for the application. Type F APQ Series Type F Power Factor Filter Banks are designed for systems that have harmonic content. If more than 15% of the facility s total load is non-linear, it is likely that the Type F product is the right choice for the application. Symptom Problem Solution Electric utility bills are high Power Factor is too low Small motors: Fixed APQ Solution or Facility wide: Automatic APQ Solution Facility is experiencing transients, flicker, or has rapid load changes Transformers overheating, blown fuses, or multiple VFDs Equipment malfunction or early equipment failure PQ Equipment is too low or PQ Equipment not performing Harmonics on the power system Excessive harmonics or system resonance Customized sapqsolution or APQvar Dynamic VAR Compensator <15% Harmonic Load: APQ Series Type C or >15% Harmonic Load: APQ Series Type F APQ Series Type F Custom Solution or AHF Active Harmonic Filter With so many solutions to choose from, it can be difficult to select the appropriate product for your application. From fixed to automatic, tuned to de-tuned, the array of choices can seem overwhelming.. APQ personnel are also available to assist in the selection of the proper product. The APQ team can even conduct on-site Power Quality studies or review a single line diagram of the facility to offer the right product or combination of products for the optimum power system efficiency solution. To learn more about the various solutions available for both power factor correction and harmonic mitigation, visit our website at 8

9 VAR COMPENSATION & POWER FACTOR IMPROVEMENT Power factor is one measurement used to determine the efficiency of any given system. It is a comparison between kw, or work produced, and kva, or total power demanded by the system. Power factor is typically represented as a decimal number, such as 0.65,and 1.0 is representative of unity power, the most efficient use of applied power. Motors and other inductive loads require two types of electric power. The first type of power is what produces useful work and is measured by the kilowatt (kw). The second type of power is the magnetizing power that produces the flux necessary for the operation of inductive devices. This is reactive power, measured by the kilovar (kvar). The combination of active power (kw) and reactive power (kvar) make up total power, represented by kilovolt-amperes (kva). Inductive Loads Demand Reactive VARs VARs are non-productive and waste energy VAR demand can fluctuate with various load conditions VARs are additional power requirements necessary for total power VARs increase total kva demand from the power source VAR consumption may increase electricity costs A more efficient system can be achieved through the use of more load-centric reactive power compensation. Additional loads can be added to existing power sources, saving the costs and downtime associated with the installation of power source upgrades. Various loads on a power system can also create unique peak current demands. If current demand exceeds the capability of the power source, a voltage dip is experienced. The addition of power factor correction equipment can lower peak current demand from a power source, thereby creating a more stable voltage supply. APQ Series Type C Power Factor Correction Banks are offered as fixed, automatic, or even as customized solutions. For operation in harmonic rich environments, select the APQ Series Type F Filter Banks and for dynamic loads, select our APQvar Dynamic VAR Compensation solution. Contact APQ or visit for more information on power factor and harmonic solutions. Power Factor is the ratio between Active Power (kw) and Total Power (kva). Both Active Power and Total Power must be supplied by the same source. By introducing power factor correction solutions, the Total Power requirement from the power source is reduced. Provide the VARS Needed by Inductive Loads Load specific injection of VARs eliminates dependence on the utility or generator Reduces VAR demand, energy consumption, and peak demand Eliminate power factor penalties Increase kva available from existing power sources While the load current remains in phase with the voltage, the magnetizing current is lagging the voltage waveform. Since total current is the sum of load current and magnetizing current, the resulting total current is also lagging The current supplied by the power factor correction solution cancels about 90% of the motor magnetizing current 9
