1 , mone on the THE CORD WEEKLY Bussng ssue drves onward ÜBC fans go ape n Vaner Cup vctory The Thunderbrds humlated the Mustangs 3714 to cap off an undefeated season Story and pc page 14 loo hr Kevn \lc uddcu Unverstes shortchanged by Bruce Maule Accordng to Dr Wer, presdent of WLU the unversty fundng problem s most acute n Ontaro The grant per student n Ontaro s $4,27348 whereas the natonal average s $5,19079 Ontaro ranks tenth: the worst The current budget surplus s runnng at $5,571 However, the total surplus n the bank s n excess of sx mllon dollars t was ponted out, however, that the actual operatng surplus s growng smaller each year These facts were some of the tems on the agenda of the Board of Govenors Meetng held last week A presentaton was made by Presdent Wer on the current stuaton of Government fundng for unverstes One of the major problems t seems, s that of drectng Federal money earmarked for postsecondary educaton to ts actual ntended program n short, the federal government feels the money t gves the provnces for unversty educaton s beng used for dfterent purposes There s no law that forces the provnce to use ths money as s ntally ntended Over the last fve years, the provnces share offundng has dropped from 709? to 50% Ths s not because of an ncrease n the ; federal governments support, but of a decrease n the part of the Provnce 112 Ontaro n fact, the percent of provncal expendtures earmarked por Unversty fundng has dropped v from 66% n 1976 to 54% ths year, r Tthe same level of fundng had been suppled, an addtonal support would have been n excess of $208 : mllon n addton, fundng for captal ^ ro j ects has been lowered j r amatcally n the past years As a Result, any of the mprovements, Laurer wants to make to the >,^ mp us (such as the new Musc lng) must be done wth prvate k!jf t0 r y Thats the reason for, 6 Lv Excellence n the Eghtes [ una rasng campagn Accordng to Dr Wer, unverstes have become the weak sster on spendng prortes n the past fve years Hosptals have receved 52% more fundng and elementary schools have receved 439? more whle unverstes have seen a 23% decrease When nflaton s taken nto account, unverstes have seen a real decrease n fundng of 12%, Ths s durng a tme when enrollment s up by 3% The effect of ths s takng ts toll n the balance sheets of Ontaros unverstes Only four or fve out of Ontaros ffteen unverstes have a current surplus ths year Carleton Unversty n Ottawa lost mllons last year The problem s further compounded by the grant system n the frst year a student s at WLU, the unversty receves no grant money because the formula works on the last years enrollment fgures n the second, some grant money s receved, but not all of t t s not untl later years that the fundng catches up n addton to ths, the fundng formula works n such a way that f one unversty ncreases ts sze, whle another mantans ts sze, the second wll actually receve less money Ths was benefcal for WLU whle we were growng, but now that we have reached our maxmum sze, t wll begn to work to our detrment A further burden s placed on our unverstes by the fact that Ontaro has 35/ ofcanadas populaton but educates 40 /< of Canadas unversty students he worst danger fofseeable s that due to a marked declne n fundng, there wll be a loss of nterest n chosng teachng as a career There s a danger of losng a generaton of professors Also establshed at the meetng was a need for a WLU flag Laurer s one of the few unverstes wthout a Hag Major Earle Shelley, Alumn member of the board, wll head a commttee to look nto the detals, such as a desgn Major Shelley has by Rob Robotham A favourable total lunar eclpse wll occur durng the mornng hours of December has been a good year for lunar eclpses: Brtan and much of Europe observed one n anuary whle most of North Amerca wtnessed an excellent lunar eclpse best snce 1857 uly 6 A total lunar eclpse occurs when the moon passes through the earths shadow; snce the apparent dameter of the earths shadow s consderably larger than that of the moon, t often takes a few hours for the moon to pass through the earths shadow The dusky, lght, outer art of the shadow s called the penumbra; the dark, nner shadow s the umbra When the moon s n the penumbra, the moon wll not appear unusual untl approxmately 15 or 20 By Mke Strathdee Blane Connolly Plans are presently n the makng whch may very well see the mplementaton of a reduced bus fare program for postsecondary students for September, 1983 A group of student leaders from U of Wand Laurer put forth three proposals whch would reduce bus fares for postsecondary students at tle Ktchener Transt Advsory commttees meetng on Tuesday WLSU presdent, Steve Patten, represented Laurer and Wm Smons, Presdent of the U of W Federaton of Students represented U of W at the meetng Three dscount schemes were proposed to the Transt Advsory Commttee A reduced regular fare, an extenson of the present system, allows the greatest potental usage for the student Ths opton would welcome weekend travel by students to shop n the downtown areas Ths proposal sees lttle or no addtonal burden on the regon A reduced monthly pass s presently avalable to hgh school students and senor ctzens Ths report, however, sees many hgh school students n a better poston to pay transt fares than most unversty students Ths proposal s also an extenson of the dscount program and s not seen by the report to pose any addtonal problems or costs The thrd opton set forth dscusses tle reduced fourmonth pass package and s seen by the report to be benefcal to both the transt system and the students The admnstraton of the program would be smplfed and the regon mnutes before t enters the umbra; then a dull grey patch may be seen on the moons eastern edge The appearance of the moon when n the umbra often depends on condtons n the earths atmosphere Often, durng totalty (when the moon s completely nsde the earths shadow), the moon s not completely black but shows a deep, coppery orange hue The moon may appear red because of the sunlshl beng refracted through the earths atmosphere However, when the earths atmosphere contans much dust, volcanc debrs, and partculates from recent volcanc erruptons, the moon can appear qute dark durng totalty Ths was the case wth the uly 6 eclpse Earler n the year the volcano El Chcon n southern Mexco, errupted and released vast would be recevng a lump sum The students, as a result of ths opton, could be guaranteed rder prvleges for the entre term WLUSU presdent, Steve Patten, sad that the meetng produced an mportant result Alderman Bggs, a member o the Advsory C ommtt ee, ma d e a mot on nstructng Ktchener Transt staff to study the effects of the proposals and to crculate ther fndngs bv the next meetng (Snce Tuesdays meetng was the last whch wll be held by the current commttee, that wll not occur untl the end of anuary) Patten was pleased that some concrete drecton emerged from the meetng he added that the student representatves wll be meetng wth Ktchener Transt employee Wallv Beck at the begnnng of anuary for further dscussons Wm Smons Federaton ol Students Presdent at the U of W, saw the meetng as a good step towards success We are defntely gong to pursue the matter As of now, Smons stated, the topc s offcally referred to the research and plannng people n the regon Wm Smons plans to make sure hs commttee wll keep on top of the staff people n the regon to ensure that the ssue does not lose ts forcefulness One of the prevous drawbacks been nterested n a WLU flag for some tme Wage settlements were approved by the Board The agreement calls for an acrosstheboard ncrease of 54% effectve rom October 19 19X2 to October 8, 1983 Ths settlement falls n lne wth lmts mposed under the Ontaro nflaton Restrant Act A contract had been sgned for an 1 1 < ncrease but t was rolled back Ths translated nto a savngs on wages of almost one mllon dollars conl on page f> A lunar eclpse for New Years amounts of debrs nto the atmosphere Some people beleve that the amount of dust released has been the greatest ths century (Ths excessve amount of dust has also caused the unusually red sunsets of these past lour months) Wth so much debrs n the atmosphere, refracted sunlght s nsde: Procrastnaton takes hold p 3 Bus 352 gets ragged p 5 Berton talks about why we act lke Canadans p 7 Laurer students prove new dea for WlPs s sound p 9 OUAA says no to dstllery p 12 conl on page 6 Weekly Chuckle How many WASPS does t take to change a lghtbulb? 3 The Cord Weekly, Thursday November 25, Procrastnaton: Under or overmotvaton? by Tmothy Taylor Procrastnaton s the art of puttng off dong what one should be dong by dong somethng else t would be safe to say that we have all experenced the phenomenon one tme or another, some of us on a contnual bass! On November 16, Dale Fogle, Drector of Counsellng Servces, explaned the varous aspects ofths common problem n a semnar n the Central Teachng Buldng Mr Fogle sees most students attrbutng procrastnaton to a sngle resultant of lazness Ths reasonng, he contends, k a msnomer Most procrastnaton s caused by motvatonal problems and not by lazness Procrastnaton may be the effect of ether undermotvaton or overmotvaton Undermotvaton can be the result of several causes The seemngly chronc procrastnator has generally developed hs problem from the culmnaton of years of playng brnkmanshpfe how far can put ths off and stll get t done) He just manages to meet the deadlne whereupon he receves the sympathy of hs professors and peers whch acts as a renforcement Ths type of person wll contnue to do ths untl he starts gettng burned and realzes that ths s not acceptable acton Other causes of procrastnaton nclude a lack of long term goals; [ml whch allow the student to endure dong assgnments he may not enjoy, lttle or no ntrnsc stmulaton from the work beng done, and motvaton beng suppled by external forces(e parents provdng the enthusasm for a student who doesnt want to be here n the frst place) roncally, overmotvaton s the other major cause of procrastnaton Ths stuaton develops when the ndvdual s a perfectonst and s tryng to acheve the perfect soluton or argument These ndvduals set standards for :hemselves whch are lterally mpossble to acheve and then become ntmdated by the necessary effort requred to meet them YUKONACK ATACK4 Because of ths, they put t off untl the last possble moment where they can rush the job and thus save face wth themselves by ratonalzng that they could have done much better f t wasnt for the lack of tme f you dentfy wth these cases, all s not lost Mr Fogle suggested solutons to these problems f you feel your problem may be one of undermotvaton, you should consder developng a system of short term rewards to allow yourself for achevng even a small amount of work Thnk about what you do when you know that you are procrastnatng and keep records of the amount of tme spent dong them Ths serves two purposes Frst t may shock you when you dscern the actual amount of tme spent n these actvtes, and secondly t may pont out serous problems such as an addcton to televson or vdeo games(these addctons have ther bass n that they are completely anxety free Offce Work Report Award Stephen A Curts has won the Coop Offce Work Report Award Ths award s gven to the student whosubmts the best Coop work term report Stephen, a thrd year Honours Busness student, worked at Touche Ross & Co n St Cathernes as a student n accounts The award was presented by Dean Alex Murray on Frday, November 5, 1982 You can become fully mmersed n them for you do not have to perform for anyone, and thus, may never fal) f your problem s one of overmotvaton the soluton may le n lowerng your nternal goals Ths s done by handng n work whch may not be up to your former standards You may n tme gradually be able to work up to them Ths prevents you from mantanng the atttude that shoddy work handed n s worse than not handng n any materal at all f you do feel that you have a problem n the area of procrastnaton, perhaps the best course of acton s to consult wth a person who has a thorough understandng of the problem Each ndvdual case s slghtly dfferent and thus the solutons to t wll vary accordngly At WLU ths advce can be obtaned from the Counsellng Servces offce n the Student Servces buldng, frst floor Cooperatve Educaton Work Report Award Susan Gong has become the frst wnner of the Cooperatve Educaton Work Report Award The award was ntated by the Socety of Management Accountants ol Ontaro (R1A) for the best work report by a management accountng student The presentaton was made on October 27 n the Paul Martn Center The Black of Canadan Lquors Shee 3 For more Yukon ack recpes wrte: MORE YUKON ACK RECPES, Box 2710, Postal Staton U, Toronto, Ontaro MBZ SP H lll lla mm bouta Sauza? The brdge just after St acobs (on the A route) was under eght to ten nches of water when we arrved there just before dusk As well, the road was marked CLOSED TO TRAFFC We beleve ths dscouraged other B route teams from fnshng the Rally Upon arrvng at the second last checkpont (Breslau) we were upset to fnd that the checkpont had been closed down f Tamae does not wsh to specfy a cutoff tme for the Rally, then checkponts should reman open untl all cars have ether passed, qut or been dsqualfed At one checkpont, drectons were to be gven verbally to the navgators T hs resulted n some confuson, and nconsstences from team to team All drectons should be wrtten, not spoken Wthn the drectons, an ndcated stop sgn should not mean a yeld sgn Also some of the measurements were not accurate Ths s a must, especally n ctes and urban areas A rally, n the tradtonal sense, s an evaluaton of drvernavgator coordnaton and skll For ths purpose, the route should be clear All teams should fnsh, us the evaluaton should be based (n tme and observaton skll n all the event was enjoyable These comments are ntended to be constructve We hope that they wll be consdered when (hopefully not f) Tamae agan coordnates such an event ohn Ruller Chrs Smth Congrats Rugby Club To the Edtor, Congratulatons are more than due to the Laurer Rugby Club lor ther strong performance ths past season, especally wth regards to ther vctory n Oho aganst the Oho rugby champons And t s ths performance that should once agan rase the queston of fundng by the Athletc Department Why should players representng ths Unversty have to spend $25 of ther own to get to an event? t would seem to me that some of the money rom the new Labatts sponsorshp should be redrected rom our notsosuccessful football team to our eager rugbv club, thereby gvng them team status Other unverstes fund rugby teams, football teams and soccer teams wth lttle trouble Even Brock Unverstv whose rugby team won ths year for the frst tme n lour years, funds that team handsomely Cmon, Tufty How about t dont thnk ts 100 much to ask Sncerely Mchele dower

5 Marketng The Cord Weekly Thursday November VEWPONT Lttle Bts How do we ever make t? by Dan Lttle We students are amazng lfeforms Each day we face the wrath of frustrated professors strvng to be selfactualzed, stand n lneups whch tax ourendurance pull allnghters, and generally deal wth enough stress to gve Ann Landers multple breakdowns How do we do t? How do we cope wth these rgors, enjoy ourselves mmensely, and learn at the same tme? The answer s certanly not our dets! All week the Torque Room and dnng hall fll our needs for fres, bagels, and coffee, so effcently w,e never seek real food And come the weekend, there s always the myrad of hamburger places, pasta parlors, and grease emporums, watng to fll our maladjusted stomachs Even then, when money s tght and hands forced, Kraft dnner flls the vod ncely, and leftovers can be made nto astrays for Chrstmas presents One frend of mne clearly put some thought nto ths dlemma, and come up wth a unque and apparently workable soluton for stayng alve and happy n ths brutal envronment He clams, and quote, all you gotta do s drnk beers eh! Theres lotsa calores n beer, beers keep you full, smlng, there are no dshes to wash, and you dont have to chew The funny part about hs theory s t apparently works But serously, wth the way we eat ts no small wonder that health servces s always dealng wth gastrc problems And as f the food wasnt enough cause, the stress we deal wth serves to make matters worse What can you do? s ths nsdous plot prepared by the cookng grease, junk food, and gas tablet companes, desgned to erode our health, destned to wn? No! students strke back Start wth an Whats Raggng You? by Mke Lund A reader wrtes: What rags me s havng requred course materal avalable only on reserve at the lbrary A case n pont s Bus 352 For all of our other Busness courses, we receve handouts n class or shell out at the bookstore But for ths one class 10 readngs are found only n the lbrary reserve room Some of the copes are n rough shape r after havng been handled and wrtten on by hundreds of students Many are at best, dffcult to read as many students appear to have used them as notepaper ask you Why s ths done? Possbly t s a method of forcng students to get some exercse by havng them travel to the lbrary and walkng down the stars nto the reserve room Thanks, but 1 can arrange my own exercse program Perhaps t s a way to force students to learn how to use a photocoper As most people would rather spend the money on the coper than try to read the artcles n the general hubbub of the reserve room Or could t be that ths s merely a scheme, thought up by some Prof, to determne who has actually done the work by checkng the sgn out cards? 9 yt \ 8:00 Your _ A\ The Cord Weekly Thursday, November 25, Laurer students prove new dea for Wlfs s sound by Nancy Damude cf The dea of havng udent performers at Wlfs seems to be a good one judgng from the large turnout last Saturday nght The frst group to perform was Prme Tme, a husband and wfe team whose easylstenng sound added to the relaxng tone of Wlfs, but was upbeat enough to encourage a bt of hand clappng and foot tappng Claudetteand Rob Murray formed Prme Tme about a year and a half ago, and snce then have been playng at varous hotels and bars around Thunder Bay and ther home town, Fort Frances Claudette plays the bass keyboard and sngs lead n most of the songs whle Rob plays the gutar and sngs as well The couple also have a rythm box to gve ther songs an added beat although at tmes t tends to overshadow the duos own talents Prme Tmes thrd member s a stuffed gorlla holdng drumstcks who sts atop of the unt and certanly captures the audences attenton Although they have been dong ther act for only a short tme, Saturdays performance proved that Claudette and Rob are already a polshed duo All ther songs, whch range from tunes by oe ackson to ames Taylor, were all well done Claudettes alto voce was especally suted to the mellow musc the couple chose and combned wth Robs n Dust n the Wnd and Teach Your Chldren Well for some great harmony Both Claudette and Rob are thrd vear students here at Laurer where they are studyng classcal musc When they heard about the dea of student performers at Wlfs they both decded that t was a good opportunty to gan more experence n the performng feld Steve Lane, the second performer at Wlfs on Saturday nght, felt much the same way A frst year Honours Englsh student at Laurer, Steve played the gutar and sang tunes by artsts such as the Beatles and Nel Young whch were very approprate selectons Not only s ths Torontonan a talented gutar and harmonca player, but also a talented songwrter as well On Saturday evenng he played just a treated to two very good, regularly scheduled performances, but also by several mpromptu acts by members of WLUs musc faculty Whle there s certanly no lack of talent at Wlfs, t s unfortunate that there seems to be a lack of organzaton and plannng put nto these performances by WlPs management Havng two groups scheduled for the same nght not only nterrupts the atmosphere (there s a delay caused by the tme needed for the second performer to set up), but also s unfar to the performers themselves Both arcdeprved of the chance to show the audence the lull range of ther talents, and t puts them n Unversty The Hawks came Hyng 0 only to be shot down not one, but twce,on dsallowed goals both nstances the ref felt that Laurer the forwards were n the creas thus dsallowng the goals The frs perod ended wth the scor deadlocked at zero The teams exchanged one goal each n second,he and they entered the thrd perod ted at one The thrd perod, as n the last game, saw a complete breakdown by the Hawks n ths game, they dd not have a bg lead to fall back on, and the Bears ol Cornell walked away wth a 71 vctory The score really s not that ndcatve of the play, but the Hawks stll have to work on playng sxty mnutes of hockey The Hawks lost the second game of the weekend 63, and agan played a strong game As n the frst game, there was a dsputed goal And agan the referees decson was n avour of the hometcam A shot from the pont bounced off the cross barand nto the corner The goal judge however, saw the puck enter the net and that s what counts The Hawks played ther strongest game of the week and got stronger as the game wore on Cornell, ever the opportunst, took advantage of every Laurer mscue and came away wth the vctory The Hawksoutshot the Bears but Cornell came up wth some outstandng goaltendng The Hawks upcomng games are all gong to be tough matches and they wll need strong play from everyone n ther games wth Guelph, McMaster, and Queens MEET THE AUTHOR WALTER STEWART lnlo hv Kevn \l( la/lt ÜBC runnng back Laurent Deslaurer tears up the turf on hs way to the Thunderbrds fnal touchdown Thunderbrds take Vaner By Chuck Krkham Evdence that Canadan Unversty football s mprovng was clearly shown at Saturdays Vaner Cup CAU champonshp The Unversty of Brtsh Columba Thunderbrds took the Cup wth an mpressve 3914 vctory over the Unversty of Western Ontaro Mustangs Awesome seems to be the most popular adjectve used to descrbe the TBrds and the easy way that they handled the Mustangs They are the best team that we have played ths year sad Western coach Darwn Semotuk They mght be the best team that have ever seen n Canadan college ball The Thunderbrds were led by the runnng of second year player Glen Steele Steele set a record wth hs 21 carres for 236 yards All told the Brtsh Columba offense ganed an ncredble 570 yards n offense Western n comparson had 170 yards n offense Another mportant stat that cannot be forgotten s the attendance, 14,759 fathful showed up to gve ther support Canadan ball s defntely on the rse Now f only there was a place that these young kds could effectvely show ther talent after graduatng The plght of Canadan quarterbacks s well known Hopefully thngs wll mprove and the CFL coaches wll realze not all Canadans were made to be blockng and lnemen on hs latest book TOWERS OF GOLD: FEET OF CLAY Tuesday, November 30th at 3:30 pm n the TURRET on the top floor of the student unon buldng Refreshments served 10% off the book at the event only Ths wse and wtty book tells Canadans much more about ther banks than the bankers are anxous to have nosed about Sponsored by THE BOOKSTORE Wlfrd Laurer Unversty
