EXTERNAL I/O Controlled remotely by an external device or control system. Alarm input, external I/O explanation Ω/ HI When using Loop output, switch to HI. Set to 75Ω when using Loop output or video inputs are disconnected. 4. VIDEO INPUT (1-9) Connect to video source. 5. CALL Connect CALL output to monitor input to display each screen in sequence. Setup time duration in SYSTEM > DWELL TIME menu settings. Alarm trigger settings can be used to control the CALL monitor. 6. AUDIO OUT (R/L) Connect to monitor audio input or speaker. 13

15 Chapter 2 GETTING STARTED Installation Guide Camera and Monitor Installation This manual will help you assemble and configure your digital video recorder system. It is easy to setup your digital video recorder just follow the instructions on pages 15 through 29 for your basic setup. If you have any comments questions about this manual, please feel free to call us at Remove your monitor from the box for testing your cameras and cables. You can use a TV set with a video input if you don t have a monitor. Plug your monitor into a AC power source. Do not mistake the antenna input on the TV for a VIDEO INPUT. Monitors and TV s have video inputs clearly marked. The TV RCA input will look some what like the image below (labeled VIDEO INPUT). This connector is an RCA female input jack. 2. Remove your cameras and camera power supplies from the box. Make sure your using power supplies that have a REGULATED POWER SUPPLY 12 VOLT OUTPUT (very important). Most power supplies have a label on the back that will tell you the type of output the power supply is capable of producing. If there is no label, DO NOT USE THE POWER SUPPLY. 15

16 NOTE: Unregulated power supplies are common and will damage your cameras. 3. Connect each one of your cameras to your regulated power supply and cable assembly. Most cable assemblies are 100 ft long or more. You will see all types of cable configurations here is one example of a cable below. 4. Connect each camera directly to the video monitor, using a new power adapter and cable for each camera. This will test each component of your video system. 16

19 Chapter 3 BASIC MENU SETUP GETTING STARTED with the BASIC MENU SETUP In this section we will cover basic menu settings to get you started. Connect the AC Power Cord with Power Adapter and plug into an electrical AC outlet. Power button is on the front panel, turn the button on. It will take 5 to 15 seconds for the system to finish initializing. On power up the Red LED indicator light will turn ON. Press the Power button and POWER LED will turn from red to orange. It takes 5 to 15 seconds for the system to boot up. POWER LED will change to green color, and the Alarm LED will be ON. 19

20 Go into the MENU run FACTORY DEFAULT, SET SYSTEM TIME and CLEAR Hard Drive 1. FACTORY DEFAULT 2. SET SYSTEM TIME 3. CLEAR Hard Drive MENU INTRODUCTION The Menu allows you to configure your digital video recorder (DVR) settings. Press the >MENU key to enter main MENU. The password screen will appear: Password: 0000 NOTE: The default Password is Simply press the Enter button. To key-in the Password, press the Right and Left buttons to move between numbers, and use the Up and Down buttons to key in the values. Press the >ENTER button once and the MENU screen will appear. Note: If you get an error message Password Error, you have entered an incorrect password. 20

21 MAIN MENU There are 6 options available in the Main Menu: SEARCH Find recorded list TIMER Scheduling Record RECORD Record Setup CAMERA Camera Channel Setup SYSTEM System Setup EVENT Event List NETWORK------Network Setup (MENU) SEARCH TIMER RECORD CAMERA SYSTEM EVENT NETWORK NOTE: some models will not have the NETWORK option. Up and Down keys: use to scroll up and down or change values when an option is selected. Left and Right keys: use to scroll left to right within a menu. ENTER key: Selects a submenu / an option under a submenu for browsing / modification MENU key: Completes modification of a menu option; exits a menu. DMR1/1N 21

Hit the >ENTER key and then the >MENU key once. Different time format options are available using TIME DISPLAY: Y/M/D. Scroll to Date menu option and hit the >ENTER key and change date and time. 22

Choose YES, you will see a dialog box: Press right arrow to clear HDD. Select > to clear HDD ALL DATA IN HDD WILL BE CLEARED ARE YOU SURE? ( : NO : YES) Exit menu by hitting MENU key till you see just the cameras. Turn your DVR off by hitting the >POWER button and unplugging the DVR for about 10 to 15 sec s. Turn the unit on and your ready to start installing and configuring the rest of your system. Move on to RECORD SETTINGS for the rest of your setup. 23

24 RECORD SETTINGS In this section we will cover General Menu Settings to get you started. When you become more familiar with the DVR settings later, you can tailor your DVR. Your DVR can record video data from hours to months depending on the MENU SETTINGS. The key MENU SETTINGS are: 1. RECORD IPS 2. RECORD QUALITY 3. MOTION TRIGGER RECORD 4. MOTION DETECTION Let s not worry about setting the MENU at this time, but try to understand how to use the chart below. The chart below will help you decide what settings to choose from in RECORD IPS and RECORD QUALITY. Under the RECORD IPS (Images Per Second) you will have 6 options and 4 options in RECORD QUALITY to choose from: 1. IPS: 1. 25A RECORD QUALITY function you will have 4 options to choose from: 1. Best 2. High 3. Normal 4. Basic The RECORD QUALITY feature provides different levels of video quality depending on your application. Sometimes we are willing to give up on video quality to get more hours out of our digital video recorder. IPS is IMAGES PER SECOND or the number of pictures your digital video recorder will take in 1 second. A good example of IPS is to imagine your self taking 25 pictures with a digital camera of 24

25 some one walking across a room. If you laid out the 25 pictures, what you will have is a smooth flowing sequence of pictures of someone crossing a room. If you take out every other picture, you would have 12 pictures and a snap shot picture affect. The 12-pictured video is not considered to be real time. 25 to 15 images per second are considered to be real time and 12 to 1 will reduce the real time affect. It s very difficult to see the difference between 25 frames a second and 1 frame a second. One frame a second is pretty good video for most applications. Here is an example to further explain the chart below: Let s say we want to record for 7 days, that s 24 hour s a day times 7 = 168hr s. If we look at the chart we have four choices: hr hr hr hr If you like high quality video, then your choice would be 180hr. You would select 8 and BEST for entries for your RECORD IPS and RECORD QUALITY. If you would like a better flowing video, then your choice would be 192hr. You would select an IPS of 15 and RECORD QUALITY of NORMAL as your entries. Proceed on to RECORD IPS and RECORD QUALITY settings. 25

26 RECORD IPS Select RECORD by hitting the > ENTER Key. (MENU) SEARCH TIMER RECORD CAMERA SYSTEM EVENT NETWORK (RECORD) HDD OVERWRITE: NO RECORD IPS: 25A RECORD QUALITY: NORMAL ALARM REC IPS: 25A ALARM REC QUALITY: HIGH MOTION TRIGGER RECORD: ON Select >REC IPS hit >ENTER and hit the UP and DOWN keys to change values. Select your images per second setting and hit >MENU key to exit. Your options are: NTSC25A PAL18A (Settings for out side the U.S.) NOTE : A means Record with Audio. The only option you have is NTSC 25A, 15, 8, 4, 2, 1. PAL option is for overseas applications. Select one of the options (25A, 15, 8, 4, 2, 1. IPS (Images per Second). Move on to REC QUALITY. REC QUALITY There are four quality settings to choose from: BEST, HIGH, NORMAL and BASIC. NOTE: The relationship of Record time, IPS and record quality, please refer to NTSC SYSTEM chart. Change REC QUALITY to best fit your application. (RECORD) HDD OVERWRITE: NO RECORD IPS: 25A RECORD QUALITY: NORMAL ALARM REC IPS: 25A ALARM REC QUALITY: HIGH MOTION TRIGGER RECORD: ON Move on to MOTION. MOTION 26

27 Only recording when you have motion can save you hard drive space and recording time. Why use valuable recording time or hard drive space to record a closed door or an empty parking lot when you can set your recorder to only record when motion occurs. MOTION TRIGGER RECORD When you set up the MOTION DETECTION function go to the MAIN MENU > RECORD MENU hit the >ENTER key. (MENU) SEARCH TIMER RECORD CAMERA SYSTEM EVENT NETWORK (RECORD) HDD OVERWRITE: NO RECORD IPS: 25A RECORD QUALITY: NORMAL ALARM REC IPS: 25A ALARM REC QUALITY: HIGH MOTION TRIGGER RECORD: ON 1. Select ON by hitting the UP or DOWN arrow keys and MENU key to exit. The motion detection will change the scanning sequence and show symbol and D on the monitor. 2. For this exercise use ON and move on to MOTION DETECTION. MOTION DETECTION 1. Press >MENU key to enter the MENU setup, then the Down (MENU) key to CAMERA setup. Hit the >ENTER key. SEARCH TIMER RECORD CAMERA SYSTEM EVENT NETWORK 2. Choose a camera and press ENTER key twice to enter the Motion Detection Setup. 27

28 MOTION DETECTION SETUP Figure Each screen displays the current camera picture overlaid with the motion targets (as Figure 1). 4. For this exercise we will use the PIP key on the front of the DMR to select all targets for motion detection. 28

29 PIP turns all motion targets on the screen ON and the character O will appear in all the cells. Continue with motion setup by going to ALARM DURATION and setting up recording time for motion detection. ALARM DURATION The MOTION trigger recording time will depend on ALARM DURATION mode setting and it will record from the last trigger time. Example 1: If you set the ALARM DURATION to 1 min, and motion is detected at 9:00:00. The recording time will be from 9:00:00 to 9:01:00. If the motion detection triggers again at 9:00:40 while still recording the triggered recording time will change from 9:00:00 to 9:00:40. The full recording time will be from 9:00:00 to 9:01:40. The total recording time is 00:01:40. Set the motion recording time. Default setting is 10 sec. Options are 10 SEC, 15 SEC, 20 SEC, 30 SEC, 1MIN, 2MIN, 3 MIN, 5 MIN, 10 MIN, 15 MIN, 30 MIN, ALWAYS. Hit MENU to exit. THIS CONCLUDES OUR BASIC SETUP AND YOU SHOULD BE OPERATIONAL. PLEASE CONTIUNE READING THE USER MANUAL FOR FURTHER OPTIMAL CONFIGURATION SETTINGS. 30 OPERATIONS RECORDING OPTIONS The DVR offers four recording modes: ALARM, TIMER, MANUAL and MOTION Trigger. 1. ALARM RECORDING: DVR is triggered by an alarm input indicated by the letter A and the symbol. 2. TIMER RECORDING: Recording is scheduled by a timer Indicated by the letter T. 3. MANUAL RECORDING is initiated manually by pressing the >REC key. Indicated by the letter M. 4. MOTION TRIGGER RECORDING is triggered by motion detection. Indicated by the letter D and the symbol. On the monitor screen, you will find the date, time, amount of available hard drive space left and the letter M representing the method of recording that is occurring. NOTE: 1. When the hard drive or HDDs is full previous recorded files may be overwritten under O/W recording mode. 2. Master and Slave hard drive available space indicators are visible on the screen. Master drive is displayed on the right side and Slave is on the left side. 3. Early warning 3 second buzzer will notify you when you only have 5 GB of hard drive space available and repeat at 4GB, 3GB, 2GB and 1GB. 30

31 ALARM RECORDING SETUP You can use Pins 2 through 9 and Pins 15 through 22 as alarm inputs. 1. When ALARM settings are set to HIGH: you can use these inputs to connect to any device that will output a 5VDC TTL signal. When alarm input signal is HIGH, the unit starts to record and sound buzzer if active. 2. When ALARM setting are set to LOW: you can use these inputs to connect to any device that will output a 0VDC or zero volts. When alarm input signal is LOW, the unit starts to record and sound buzzer if active. NOTE: DO NOT USE 12VDC OR ANY SOURCE OTHER THAN THE 5VDC TTL REQUIRED. USING ANYTHING OVER THE (5VDC TTL) WILL DAMAGE DMR. CHECK ALL VOLTAGES BEFORE CONNECTING TO ALARM INPUTS. IF YOU RE NOT SURE ABOUT THE VOLTAGE REQUIRED, DO NOT ATTEMP TO CONNECT. ALARM RECORDING MENU SETTINGS Go to ALARM setting and set to: 3. LOW: When alarm input signal is zero volts, the unit starts to record and will sound buzzer if active. 4. HIGH: When alarm input signal is 5V TTL, the unit starts to record and will sound buzzer if active. Press MENU Key to enter MENU setup and select CAMERA. Why use valuable recording time or hard drive space to record a closed door or an empty parking lot when you can set your recorder to only record when motion occurs. 37 4. The targets on each motion setup can be turned to ON or OFF individually. To set up targets, using the front panel buttons: Press ENTER to confirm the channel Press ENTER to enter motion mode Up -- moves the target cursor up one row at a time. Down -- moves the target cursor down one row at a time. Left -- moves the target cursor left one column at a time. Right -- moves the target cursor right one column at a time. Press >ENTER to turn the target cursor ON and press ENTER again to turn the target cursor OFF (Figure 1-1). ZOOM turns all targets in the current row ON or OFF. The lower the value (001) the higher the sensitivity. The higher the value (255) the lower the sensitivity. Continue with motion setup by going to ALARM DURATION and setting up recording time for motion detection. NOTE: Motion and brightness will affect Sensitivity settings. NOTE: Camera Scanning sequence will change when motion recording is active. Cameras detecting motion more frequently will show up more in the camera scanning sequence. Example1: If camera 1 is detecting more motion than the other cameras its scanning sequence will be: Camera1, Camera 2, Camera1, and Camera3 9th. 2 nd example: If cameras 2 & 3 detect motion at the same time the scanning sequence could be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, 4 th. ALARM DURATION The MOTION trigger recording time will depend on ALARM DURATION setting and it will record from the last trigger time. 38

All network address data should be provided by your local ISP (internet service provider). 49 7. Exit the setup menu. Turn DVR power off for ten seconds or more and restart the DVR. If the DVR is connected to a router it is a good idea to recycle the power on it also. Test your DVR & PC connection 1. Return to your computer: go to the PC start menu and select Run 2. Type cmd and click OK. 49

50 3. A black box will pop up with a C prompt. After the C prompt type ping at the dos prompt, space bar and the IP address of the DVR and then click >ENTER. Fig 1: 4. A box will pop up and it should say reply from the IP address. You will also see Packets sent = X, Received = X and Lost = X. This will tell you that, you ve successfully connected to your DVR and we can proceed. Like FIG.2 below. FIG.2 If you re seeing Request timed out and Packets: Sent X, Received = X, Lost = X like FIG.3 below, then you have not established a LAN connection between the DVR and the computer. You will need to recheck all DVR network settings above, check with IP provider or IT department, router settings. Make sure cables are good, and connected. 50

51 FIG.3 This could also be due to a bad cable between the DVR and router or bad DVR Network Interface Controller (NIC). Check the Ethernet cable connection on the back of the DVR and check for a green light and that they blink when you ping the DVR. If it is not blinking, this could indicate that the DVR s network interface card is bad and call us for tech support. If green light is blinking, as a final check, connect the DVR directly to the computer using an Ethernet crossover cable (which is available at any electronics store such as Radio Shack, or Best Buy, Circuit City, etc ) eliminating all other cables and equipment. And repeat the pinging process PC Ethernet Crossover Cable DVR 5. If you re looking at FIG.2 then you have demonstrated that a Local Area Connection (LAN) has been made between the DVR and the computer. Proceed to Software installation. DYNAMIC IP SETTINGS If you are unable to obtain a static IP address from your cable provider then you will have to use a dynamic name server service. We recommend ww.dyndns.com On their website under Resources select Home Solutions. Under the title of Home Solutions click the link for Dynamic DNS. Then under More Info select the link How-To. Then under Dynamic DNS How-To select the link for account. From this point follow the instructions on the screen to set-up your Dynamic IP account. SOFTWARE INSTALLATION NOTE: For viewing video on the internet use the attached CD and install the Video Web Server. 1. Put the attached CD into a CD-ROM and install the application program into PC. 2. Press Next. 51

68 Remove the Cartridge Casing from the DVR Remove the Cover from the Cartridge Casing Unclip the release latch OPEN by gently pushing on the latch. Slide the cover off the Cartridge Casing. 3. Install HDD into the Cartridge Casing Connect the two cables to the back of the Cartridge Casing to the HDD. Secure HDD in the Casing (optional) Use the supplied screws and tighten, positioning the HDD into place.
