2 The 36TH Annual EVVY Awards LIVE FROM Cutler Majestic Theatre May 12, 2017 at 7PM The EVVY Awards is seeking a full broadcast team for our Cutler Majestic show live on May 12, The EVVY Awards Technical Division is led by Executive Producer Will Hart (will@evvyawards.org). The division is comprised of the Audio, Stage Management, Script Supervision, Technical Management, Electrics, Theatrical Production Supervision, Director and Broadcast teams. Our Broadcast Team is lead by Director Abby Skorupski (director@evvyawawrds.org). Please note that The EVVY Awards Gala is holding a separate crew hiring event. Please gala@evvyawards.org for more information. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR Hello potential broadcast team! Broadcast team is an essential aspect to the show we are the ones responsible for what is broadcasted to potentially thousands (or millions!) of people. Call me biased, but I believe this is the most fun department of the show. If you crave adrenaline and love the rush of a live broadcast, this is the department for you. I ve outlined all positions I will be hiring along with some skills each position requires. You must be available the week of May 12 no exceptions. Skills necessary for any element of the broadcast team: Strong ability to take direction Quick thinking Problem solving and trouble shooting Communication Strong work ethic Passion We will be working a lot of hours throughout the week, long days, and varied schedules. Experience is definitely preferred, but passion is the key at the end of this. Without it what re you doing here? At interviews you will have the ability to apply for more than one position and specify which you are most interested in. Please do not forget your resume (or reels if applicable)! 3 HIRING AND INTERIVEW TIMELINE Assistant to the Director Hiring January 26th and 27th cover letter and resume to along with your availablity to interview on either January 26th 27th. Associate Director Hiring January 30th through February 4th cover letter, resume, and director s track to director@evvyawards.org along with your availablity to interview the week of January 30th. Broadcast Crew General Hiring Friday February 3rd from 10am-4pm The EVVY Awards Office, Campus Center L105 Please bring a copy of your resume to your interivew. You may come at any time between 10am and 4pm. 4 ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR This is for somebody with interest in television directing or someone who wants to learn more about it. The assistant to the director works closely with the directing team attends all meetings and takes broadcast department related notes. Relays communication with other departments and crew and other miscellaneous tasks that the director can not fulfill at that given time Requirements: Strong listening skills Effective communication skills Forward thinking even better if you catch something that needs to be done before I ask! Time I would like you at every meeting with me. From hiring, to table meetings (Wednesdays at10p), to aesthetics meetings and anything that comes up in-between. Passion, dedication Strong organizational skills Preferred skills: Knowledge of Microsoft Office I could very well ask you to make spread sheets or shot sheets Interest / Experience directing a cover letter and resume to director@evvyawards.org along with your availablity to interview on either January 26th 27th. 4

5 ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR The AD contributes ideas and is throughout the entire pre-production process. Scripts shot sheets along side the director for musical performances, takes notes on blocking talent, entrances and exits. Prepares camera shots, movements, scenic and miscellaneous cues for show. Associate Director hiring will be separate from broadcast crew hiring. Send an to expressing your interest, and / or approach me after the general meeting. PLEASE BRING A DIRECTORS TRACK. REQUIREMENTS: Experience as an AD for multi-camera television Strong ability to multi-task Strong communication skills your direction must be clear and concise Strong organization organized to the point you are able to be two pages ahead in the script and know have an idea what is coming next Availability attend as many meetings as able to for a strong understanding of the show from the get-go Ability to handle pressure PREFERRED: An AD position for the spring semester Experience as a Director for multi-camera television Experience in live television Innovative ideas cover letter, resume, and director s track to director@evvyawards.org along with your availablity to interview the week of January 30th. 5

6 CAMERA OPERATORS PED/TRIPOD OPS, ROBOTIC CAM OPS, DOLLY OPS, STEADICAM OPS, AND JIM TEAM Your work is what is seen these are the most important roles of the show! Camera operators will work off of a shot list and under the direction of the broadcast staff to capture shots for broadcast. Responsible for set-up and breakdown of cameras ranging from the mounts listed above. Will attend a camera workshop at the start of production week. Please bring a reel with you if you have! Requirements: Strong sense of shot composition a beautiful shot that does not need adjusting Experience with GV and/or EX3 cameras Ability to operate cameras while controlling zoom and focus shots will often have motion and those must be fluid. We can never have a shot out of focus! Ability to build and breakdown tripods (or dolly track / steadicam if applicable.) Ability to follow and update shot sheets most shots will be communicated ahead of time but you should be able to grab a MS of trombone player stage right without further explanation. Strong listening skills my AD and I will be in your ear the entire show and there most likely will not be time to repeat simple directions Troubleshooting Ability to work comfortably under pressure Ability to be on your feet for extended amount of time Preferred: Knowledge of stage direction stage left, right, upstage, downstage Experience on a multi-camera / live production PEDESTAL OPERATOR SKILLS: Comfortable with handheld operation Lens swapping Skill with studio pedestals DOLLY OPERATOR: Requirements: Same as camera operator requirements listed above + experience with a dolly track. We want smooth shots tracking the stage from the pit. STEADICAM OPERATORS: Requirements: Same as camera operator + Emerson certification or clearance from the college. 6

7 CAMERA OPERATORS (CONT.) ROBOTIC CAMERA OPERATOR: Requirements: Same as above + quick learning. You will be operating your camera remotely, getting zooms and pans of audience and wings. JIB TEAM: Jib team members will assist in the build and operation of the Jib camera systems. They must operate both the Jib and the camera onboard the system. Requirements: Teamwork Spatial perception Experience with jib or crane system 7

Duties may include spotting, cable wrangling, and others assigned by camera operator. Camera assists/ grip / utilities will also attend the camera workshop at beginning of production week. REQUIREMENTS: Ability to coil XLR, Triax and Fiber cables Ability to respond rapidly to changing situations PREFERRED: Familiarity with Grass Valley and Sony cameras 8

9 PLAYBACK AD You will assist the camera operators from build through strike and with operation of cameras. Duties may include spotting, cable wrangling, and others assigned by camera operator. Camera assists/ grip / utilities will also attend the camera workshop at beginning of production week. 10 VENICE OPERATOR The Venice playback operator will import all video playback elements and operate Venice during the broadcast. They will work with the Playback AD to ensure all elements are correct and present. REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of Rohde & Schwarz Venice Basic knowledge of video formats and properties Media management and organizational skills Ability to work well under pressure Attention to detail Proficiency with Adobe Media Encoder Basic audio knowledge 10

11 CHYRON OPERATOR The Chyron operator will import all graphical playback elements and operate Chyron during the broadcast. They will work with the Playback AD to ensure all elements are correct and present. REQUIREMENTS: Basic knowledge of Chyron Lyric including import, playback and basic editing controls Familiarity with basic graphics formats and properties PREFERRED: Detailed knowledge of Chyron software Ability to build transitions and update in out effects in chyron 11

12 TECHNICAL DIRECTOR The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for the operation of the video switcher. They build the profile, and coordinate with tech manager to ensure all sources are mapped and functioning. Follows instructions of the director during the broadcast. REQUIREMETS: Advanced ability to operate Grass Valley switchers Ability to coordinate with Technical Managers Advanced troubleshooting skill Good listening skills Ability to work under pressure PREFERRED: Familiarity with all control room operations: shading, video playback, graphics Advanced ability to program GV switchers TD experience on a live multi-camera production 12

13 VIDEO OPERATOR/SHADER Responsible for shading cameras, setting color and exposure during and leading up to the broadcast. Will work under the direction of the directing team to achieve the look desired for each scene of the show. Required Skills: Ability to read a waveform monitor Familiarity with OCP 400 panels Familiarity with GV cameras Preferred Skills: Ability to read vectorscope Advanced troubleshooting skill Advanced skills with GV OCP units Experience with color grading Experience on a live multi-camera event 13

14 SCREENS DIRECTOR The Screens Director will be calling the graphical elements in the monitor on stage for the show, including but not limited to: logo loop, nomination reels, winner reels, packages. They will work configure their own monitor and work closely with Tech Management. REQUIREMENTS: Ability to read a rundown Organizational skills Ability to operate independently Ability to adjust quickly under changing circumstances Ability to handle pressure PREFERRED: Basic knowledge of Grass Valley switchers Familiarity with teleprompter, shading, and other control room positions Interest / experience in directing Creativity 14

15 SCREENS TECHNICAL DIRECTOR The screens technical director will operate the switcher under the screens director for elements apart of the in house display. REQUIREMENTS: Advanced ability to operate GV switchers Good listening skills Ability to coordinate with the Tech Managers Advanced troubleshooting skills Ability to work under pressure PREFERRED: Familiarity with teleprompter, shading, and other control room positions Advanced ability to program a GV switcher 15

16 TELEPROMPTER OPERATOR The teleprompter operator is responsible for getting the broadcast script imported and prepared for show. They are responsible for maintaining each script revision and making sure the prompter is accurate to the most updated script. REQUIREMENTS: Great listening Quick thinking Ability to work well independently Impeccable attention to detail Ability to adjust quickly in a changing situation Works well under pressure PREFERRED Experience with teleprompter Troubleshooting skill 16
