FREE-TO-AIR SATELLITE TELEVISION INFORMATIONAL PACKET PUBLISHED: NOVEMBER 5TH, 2012 WHAT IS FREE-TO-AIR? Free-To-Air (FTA) is exactly what the name implies. Free-To-Air systems do not require package programming; the channels are free to view and there are no monthly programming charges. Free-To-Air channels can be broadcast in either analog or digital signals. Currently there are hundreds of freely available channels, many of which are international language channels. Many others are special interests channels, local networks from the Lower 48 and Canada, and some major cable networks; all of those broadcasting in English. Alaska FTA Sales & Service primarily focuses on selling and supporting Free-To-Air systems. All the systems that we offer are DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) compliant. MPEG-II compression is used to transfer the signals from the satellite down to your receiver. Providing that you are in an area where you have the ability to receive FTA broadcasts, all residents in Alaska will require a motorized 1.8 meter (6 foot) or a 2.4 meter (8 foot) dish if you desire to receive all available FTA broadcasts. If you are only interested in one satellite or religious programming, a stationary 1.8 meter (6 foot) or a 2.4 meter (8 foot) satellite system is definitely for you. Ku Band and C-Band. What is it all about? Free-To-Air satellite signals come in two types; Ku-Band (small dish), and C-Band (large dish). Many of the international and religious channels available in Alaska are broadcast in Ku on the Galaxy 19 satellite. But many others are available. Most C and Ku-Band systems consist of a satellite receiver and a remote control as well as a dish that only points to one satellite. 2 system which moves the dish to point at all of the satellites that are visible on the southern horizon. MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE Choosing a satellite system can be a very difficult choice, especially with the large range of products that exist in the market. A consumer essentially has three choices; Buy a DirecTV, Dish Network, ShawDirect, or Bell XpressVu satellite system with subscription. In this scenario you pay for the hardware as well as a regular monthly payment on top of any pay-per-view channels you may wish to view. The subscriber is obliged to sign a contract for a minimum period of time. Also, after your contract expires, or the promotion expires, the cost for your programming rises tremendously, and if you decide to cancel your service, you are then left with equipment that you don t want, which can lead to problems later on, and it takes up space in your home, or on your roof. The draw back to this approach is that you need to continually spend money to keep ahead of ECMs (Electronic Counter Measures) in order to view programming. Free-To-Air as the name implies is free. There are no ECMs to worry about and all programming is free. No contract is required and owners are able to view all the Free-To-Air channels that can be received without limitations. You can also view programming from various countries and local channels from nearly 100 cities across the United States. You are not obliged to sign up to a contract. Overall the Free-To-Air systems are significantly better, especially if you enjoy watching programming in other languages. With an FTA motorized satellite system, you have access to over 1,700 radio and television networks from more than 30 satellites on the visible horizon. At the present time, satellite and cable companies struggle to carry 500 channels, and will charge you premium rates to have all of those channels. You can use your FTA satellite receiver to automatically tune your dish to the satellite you want and watch as many Free-To-Air channels as you are able to receive on that specific satellite. For those of you who desire religious programming without needing to pay a monthly bill, an FTA system is assuredly right for you. A motorized FTA system will give you access to religious programming from all over the world, or if you want something that is specific to one denomination, a stationary system is only required for that type of service. Free-To-Air TV is clearly the choice if you are interested in multilingual broadcasts. To receive an Alaska Road System Install, you must reside in a community or on a property that lies on the main Alaska Road System. This includes the following highways in Alaska: Alaska Highway, Elliott Highway, Glenn Highway, Parks Highway, Richardson Highway, Seward Highway, Steese Highway, Sterling Highway, and the Tok Cut-Off. All installs on the Alaska Road System will include a fuel surcharge of $0.50 per road mile (round trip) in addition to the prices listed above, using Fairbanks as the point in which the installer will depart from to install your system. 2 Stationary Dish installation also covers all religious programming. 7 3 Motorized dish allows for customer to receive all available FTA services that can be received here in Alaska. This also includes the cost for the installation. 4 Alaska Bush System Installs are defined as those residents who do not live on the main Alaska Road System as described above. All installs in the Alaska Bush will include a fuel surcharge of $1.05 per air mile (round trip) in addition to the prices listed above, using Fairbanks as the point in which the installer will depart from to install your system. 5 Price is for the installation and purchase of one additional receiver, which is for any location in Alaska. 6 A site survey is defined as an installer s examination of a potential installation site to exclusively determine if a customer is eligible to receive Free-To-Air satellite service. 7 Not all states shown in grey will offer all of the major broadcast networks.
