15 General information Counters Counting or pulse counting is one of the most common functions in automation systems. Pulse counting can be done with dedicated components - counters - or as a built-in function in a control system. Counters are availabe in many confi gurations depending on working principle - mechanical, electromecahnical or electronic - and area of use, for example totalizers, preset counters or as tachometers. Totalizers Simple counter without output signal. Can be used to locally display a value. Some totalizers have built-in scale function for example to be able to convert a number of pulses to a certain length. Preset counters A counter with one or more outputs, activated when the counter reach the preset/presets value/values. Tachometers Counter that displays the speed. The number of pulses per a predetermined unit of time is displayed, for example number of pulses per second, ie the speed. Counters with time meter A time meter measure the time, for example hours, minutes or seconds, when the counter input is activated. Counters with time meter normally have an output, activated when the preset value is reached. Multifunction counters A counter with more than one function, for example totalizing, speed indication and time metering in the same unit. Multifunction counters are also available as preset counters. Hour meters Hour meters are used to record operating time for machines, the time is measured when the input is activated. Hour meters can also be equipped with front reset key or external reset signal. Process instruments Process instruments are used to display process information like pressure, temperature or similar. The input signal is normally an analogue current/ voltage signal or a signal from a thermocoupler. More advanced process instruments have features like programmable alarm limits. Process instruments can also be equipped with output signals. Inputs Most common input signal is 24 VDC transistor input, either NPN (negative polarity) or PNP (positive polarity). Optocouplers are used as input for AC and higher voltages. Most counters have inputs for both low frequency and high frequency counting. Inductive sensors, capacitive sensors, limit switches, photoelectric sensors, pushbuttons or similar components are usually connected to the low frequency input. Rotating encoders are connected to high frequency inputs. Incremental encoders can be equipped with one or more channels. Encoders with one channel are used for length measure or speed control, where direction sensing is not required. Applications where the direction of rotation should be sensed requre an encoder with two channels, A and B, where B being shifted 90 out of phase. Counting based on two channel encoders is often referred to as quadrature counting. Process instruments normally have either analogue input or input for thermocoupler. Outputs The counters can also be equipped with output signals. The most common output signal is a relay output that changes contact position for example when a preset is reached. More advanced counters can also be equipped with analogue output and serial output, RS5. Input modes The counter must be adapted to the input signals from the system. Simple totalizers have only one counting input when more advanced multifunction counters normally have two or more inputs. In addition to that the counter must have the right type of input - NPN/PNP/AC - it must also be able to correctly interpret the signal. Common input signals/counting modes are shown in fi gure 1. Less qualifi ed counters have only one counting register, ie the counting input/inputs effects the same counting register. More advanced counters like Eclipse are equipped with more counting registers. One function that requires more than one counting register is batch counting. Batch counting means that a separate counting register - batch counter - counts the number of cycles in an other counting register - main counter.
