X-Net CWDM System COE X-Net CWDM - The Concept COE X-Net is a comprehensive video transmission and management system for fibre optic and Ethernet based networks. It employs the latest laser and digital encoding techniques for the transmission of video and associated signals, therefore guaranteeing video image quality even on the longest links. Optical multiplexing technology successfully employed in very large system deployments (London Congestion Charging or Delhi Metro Rail Corridor for example) has now been incorporated into the COE X-net range. This supplement to the X-Net Product Brochure describes the technology, its applications and benefits. Optical Multiplexing Optical multiplexing is commonly referred to as DWDM or CWDM technology: Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing or Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing. As the acronyms suggest, each method provides a number of different wavelengths that can be used for information transmission within the fibre and both may be deployed in optical surveillance networks. Both DWDM and CWDM lasers are highly tuned devices that allow the optical spectrum form 1270nm to 1610nm to be split into a number of "optical channels". These channels, or wavelengths, can then be used by COE X- Net to send video and data thus multiplying the video channel count by the number of wavelengths employed within the same fibre. This has a dramatic effect on the video channel count available since traditional optical techniques would dictate two wavelengths only: 1300nm and 1550nm. The choice of CWDM and DWDM is defined by channel requirements and cost considerations. Typically CWDM is the lower cost option as the lasers are not as highly tuned. However, there are only 18 wavelengths available as opposed to DWDM where up to 96 wavelengths are available. 3
Features and Benefits Multiple wavelengths are available on the same optical fibre - The COE X-Net system can support up to 144 video channels on the same fibre thus expanding the fibre capacity dramatically. Uses industry standard wavelengths - Ensuring long term support and flexible transmit power options to suit a variety of transmission distances (Optical budgets up to 37dB are supported). All COE X-net video modules support the technology - Low risk, low cost and fast upgrade path for existing network with little disturbance to existing field deployed fibre system. Supports video, audio, data, Ethernet and contact closure transmission - No limit to signal types across the fibre network Interchangeable industry standard SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) optical fibre interfaces - can be swapped on-site, thus allowing for flexible re-configuration or repairs of the system and reducing the spares holding costs. Complex fibre networks can be constructed - Dual redundant, duplex, star, linear and ring topologies may be realised. State of the art SFP optics and LC connectors Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) optics are rapidly becoming the de-facto standard for all Ethernet switches and telecommunications fibre transmission. X-Net is the first product to embrace this new technology within the CCTV fibre transmission arena. SFP optics offer numerous advantages: Easy on-site optical replacement In-built laser status diagnostics The individual alignment approach in the LC consistently results in superior insertion and return losses for both multimode and singlemode applications - typically <0.1dB. The fibre spacing in the LC provides an inherently better transceiver connector for both multimode and singlemode applications. A single duplex or twin fibre module can be presented in the same housing allowing for greater flexibility and cost options. 24 million LC connectors were shipped worldwide by a single vendor alone by the middle of

COE X-Net CWDM Applications In order to understand the flexibility of CWDM technology, we have provided several application examples below. Each employs the technology in a slightly different way. It is impossible to show all options within the scope of this brochure and we would encourage you to contact us with your specific design needs where our Technical Services team will be happy to help you. Example 1: Point to Point High Channel Count Link Figure 1 below shows a simple point-to-point system where 8 optical wavelengths have been employed to provide two-way transmission on one optical fibre. Standard COE X-Net modules have been used for the interfaces to the various video and data signals. Each COE X-Net module is fitted with a CWDM laser TX/RX unit. The individual optical connections are fed to the X-Net CWDM optical multiplexer module for multiplexing onto the trunk fibre. This configuration enables the User to: Increase video channel count from 8 to 144 (using COE X-Net OPT-8T modules) Increase auxiliary data/audio/contact channels as required Channels may be configured for transmission in either direction Keep within one 4U X-Net chassis space Figure 1. This example provides a very flexible point-to-point link with high channel count at low cost increments. 7
Example 2: Multipoint to point airport system In this example, the use of a passive optical coupler enables a split system to be realised. Through careful selection of the individual wavelengths, see Figure 2, three discrete locations are connected. Each location has video/data comms channels available and channel count/configuration may be easily changed by simply swapping the X-Net modules around. Transmission may be in either direction of course so that a complex video communications system can be realised. Figure 2. Further transmission points may be added and the number is only dictated by the optical budget limitations of the fibre network This configuration enables the User to: Build a multiple point surveillance network utilising just one fibre Allocate video/data channels as required Build in capacity expansion for future requirements Realise a low cost, flexible optical network with the minimum of components 8
Example 3: Linear, dual redundant railway transmission system In this example the use of wavelength dependent ADD/DROP multiplexers (ADM's) enables us to realise a two-fibre dual redundant video network. Figure 3 shows the design. Each Station uses two wavelengths to transmit/receive video and data. Two ADM's are employed at each Station to manage the allocated wavelengths. The ADM's are low loss devices to ensure maximum optical path loss is available for the trunk fibre. Each Station also employs a 2:1 optical coupler and splitter for MAIN/BACK-UP fibre signal integration and the selection of which fibre to use is carried out at the Control Room via the X-Net CWDM & Optical Switch module. This module has an automatic selection control system for live fibre selection, therefore upon the failure of a fibre route automatic switch-over is achieved. Figure 3. This design may be expanded in many different ways including incorporating the techniques from the previous two examples. Hence complex topologies may be realised. Example 4: Perimeter security optical infeed system In this example the use of wavelength dependent ADD/DROP multiplexers (ADM's) enables us to transmit camera video and control signals from multiple locations onto a single fibre optic cable. Figure 4 shows the design. Each collection point uses two wavelengths to transmit/receive video and data. In this example two seperate fibre system are interlaced to provide an additional level of fibre redundancy. The design may be expanded to incorporate up to 8 collection points per fibre. Figure
