Technical Team: CFM Group Approval: Page 2 of 20 I. PURPOSE All LACCD learning environments shall feature digital, high-resolution video/data projectors with appropriate lumens. The projector will be capable of both wired and wireless communication. It shall have the capability to display content from high-resolution source devices such as video content via HDMI, document camera, laptop or tablet computers in each room. Based on discipline, room size, shape, and number of students, the projection resolution, lumens, contrast, number of projectors, etc. may vary and must be designed accordingly with appropriate learning environment. For example, higher resolution and dynamic color for video may be required for film, art and photography classes; whereas an accounting class may require a projector capable of displaying fine data such as financial documents. Some programs may require multiple video/data projectors. Based on the learning environment application, projection types and methods such as standard throw (ceiling mounted) or short throw (wall-mounted) will be considered. The video/data projectors must have multiple inputs and be flexible for the addition of emerging and third party technologies. Projectors should be capable of the following: Integrate data and video projection into classroom lessons to maximize learning Display PowerPoint presentations, web based content such web sites and YouTube videos, DVD s, Blu Ray, document camera, and auxiliary input content Interactivity - connect to white boards technologies (to add annotation to projected images) Connect to wireless devices, student s laptops II. SCOPE The AV Data/Video Projector Standard applies to all LACCD learning spaces: classrooms, conference rooms, laboratory, and auditoriums. This is intended for use in all construction or for renovation projects, which revamp existing classroom space throughout the LACCD. This standard will ensure that the AV Data/Video Projector Standard throughout the LACCD will adhere to established performance criteria, design standards, and operation specifications. This standard will provide parameters but will require interpretation and adjustment to suite the specific situations presented by instructional and academic needs of variety of disciplines, departments, and programs across the LACCD. The AV Data/Video Projector Standard is intended to provide the minimum performance standards for the technical qualification for the projection units, lamps and features of education projectors, training

Section 1: General Requirements 1.1 Commercial and professional rated hardware 1.2 High Definition 1.3 High native contrast ratios 1.4 High native resolution 1.5 High ANSI lumens output 1.6 Long lamp life 1.7 3D ready 1.8 Interactive White Board capability 1.9 Wireless capabilities (Wi-Fi) 1.10 Closed Captioning capabilities 1.11 Emergency notification capabilities 1.12 High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) 1.13 LAN connection to support District remote monitoring and control system 1.14 Resistance to deterioration and pre-mature aging 1.15 Accessibility to lamp module so that projector can stay mounted when replacing lamps 1.16 Lamp faulty or replacement LED Indicator 1.17 Filter free design or automatic cleaning filter (or easy access to filters for cleaning and replacement) 1.18 Ecology-conscious design minimize environmental impact in the product design, production and delivery processes, and in the performance of the product during its life cycle. 2. Section 2: Data/Video Projector Types and Methods 2.1 Standard Throw (Ceiling-Mounted)
Technical Team: CFM Group Approval: Page 5 of 20 Typical classroom projectors simple to install and secure Can be used with multiple screen type and sizes Disadvantages: shadow/glare when standing in light path Standard room projection (Up to 150 seats) Large Venue projection (over 150 seats) High brightness and vivid picture quality for large venue Dual lamp systems support 24/7 operation and prevents image interruption even if a lamp burns out More features and functions that typical classroom units 2.2 Short Throw (Wall or Ceiling Mounted)
Technical Team: CFM Group Approval: Page 6 of Enable images to be projected from short distances in small to medium size rooms where standard ceiling mount projector is not ideal Helps instructors eliminate eyestrain, eye glare from projector light source Reduce shadow interference 2.3 Ultra Short Throw (Wall Mounted) Enable images to be projected from very short distances in small to medium size rooms where standard ceiling mount projector is not ideal Best used where interactive white board capabilities are required Helps instructors eliminate eyestrain, eye glare Eliminate shadow interference from light source 3. Section 3: Projector Imaging Technologies Depending on the room design and function, the appropriate projector imaging technology such as DLP, LCD, and LCoS should be considered. The following are pro s and con s of each projector imaging technology:
Technical Team: CFM Group Approval: Page 7 of DLP (Digital Light Processing) DLP projectors send their light to a single chip containing thousands of tiny mirrors. These mirrors modulate the light before passing it through a rapidly spinning wheel that selects the colors for the projected image Pro s Smoother video Smaller box Pixels far less visible, (although normally not an issue for business use) More filmlike on DVD and HDTV Generate "blacker" blacks Higher contrast Con s Possible rainbow effect bothers some More moving parts (color filter wheel) Color filter wheel often produces soft but audible whine Poorer reds and yellows at full power Color saturation Need more lumens than LCD, for rich colors, when dealing with ambient light 3.2 LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) LCD projectors split light into red, green and blue frequencies that pass through three separate LCD panels and then recombine in a prism for projection Pro s Richer color dynamics for better results in rooms with ample ambient light Draw less power Throw less heat No color filter wheel = No "rainbow effect" Slightly quieter Seemingly sharper image on data Need about 30% more lumens in a DLP projector to hold its own with an LCD model Con s More visible pixels Some screen door effect on certain video images Physically larger - Even for the same number of lumens
Technical Team: CFM Group Approval: Page 8 of 20 Poorer contrast Blacks come out lighter gray than DLP projectors Unknown lifespan of LCD Panels 3.3 LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) LCoS technology is also referred to as reflective LCD. LCoS projectors bounce the red, green, and blue beams off an internal reflector panel before sending them to a prism for recombination into a single projected image. (Individual manufacturers use their own names.) Pro s LCoS resolutions tend to start at SXGA enabling native 720p high definition images to be shown Like LCD, LCoS machines can be very bright Offers very smooth, film-like image due to its pixel structure Great color saturation and accuracy Con s Dead pixels are more visible than with other technologies and happen as often as with LCD's Generally more expensive 4. Section 4: Projector Surfaces 1 Projectors require a surface to project onto typically a screen, however new surfaces have such painted surfaces have become available. The quality and brightness of a video projector s image can be greatly influenced by the projection surface. An appropriate system design will consider a surface that best address the projector surfaces as described below) and reflects projected light towards the audience and one that does not reflect stray light which can reflect back into the viewing area resulting in audience eye strain and fatigue. Such reflection will cause a loss of contract and detail, especially in the dark areas of an image. Projection surface selection is important in order for participants to be able to perceive the images from the data/video projectors as accurately as possible. Proper surface selection is critical to achieving this. 1 Reference: 1 st Edition, 2 nd Printing, Essentials of the AV Industry, InfoComm International
Technical Team: CFM Group Approval: Page 9 of 20 The projector type and use shall determine the best projector surface, such interactive whiteboard. The following are acceptable methods of projector surfaces. 4.1 Projection Screen Projection screens shall provide uniform brightness over the entire image area with no dim areas or hot spots. Screens shall be sized appropriately to accommodate good viewing at any student seat locations. The projector screen and data/ video projector aspect ratio should match. The projection screens should have uniform brightness and the data projector image shall fill the entire screen. 4.2 Dry Erase Paint Use of commercial-grade,low glare, dry erase projection compatible paint, that cost effectively, turns any smooth surface into a high-performance dry-erase writing surface, such as Idea Paint, in lieu of projection screen (combination of whiteboard and projection screen) may be considered. Such paint should take into account issues regarding color, gain and smoothness. 4.3 Whiteboard White board surface can be used as a projection surface in conjunction with Short/Ultra Short Throw projection when used for IWB function. Whiteboard surfaces to be used as projection surface should consider low gloss, glare, reflectivity, brightness and clarity. 5. Section 5: Viewing Angle Viewing angles must be considered for appropriate projector surfaces. See figure below for optimum and acceptable viewing areas. Surface type selection is a consideration in the viewing angle. (Source: InfoComm AV Design Reference Manual)
