They include some personal favourites Sibelius, Walton, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky with good friends and admired artists such as Pinchas Zukerman, Murray Perahia, performing in recital, Hansjörg Schellenberger and Lisa Gasteen among our guests. I invite you to join us for a year of music with this magnificent orchestra! Vladimir Ashkenazy, Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor The Sydney Symphony and Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Vladimir Ashkenazy, are proud to announce the orchestra s 2013 season. The season includes a stellar line-up of some of the world s finest classical musicians, including pianist Murray Perahia making his Australian debut, two performances of Britten s War Requiem and a concert version of Wagner s Flying Dutchman, together with performances of the highest calibre throughout greater metropolitan Sydney and New South Wales. In marking the fith year of Vladimir Ashkenazy s tenure as Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, the orchestra welcomes him to Sydney three times during the 2013 Season: in February, May and November. He begins the year by conducting two works by Sibelius the mighty Lemminkäinen Suite and his groundbreaking Kullervo and ends the season with performances of Mahler s Fifth Symphony and Sibelius s Fifth Symphony, as well as performances of the Bruch Violin Concerto in G minor with soloist Pinchas Zukerman. In 2013, the Sydney Symphony is proud to welcome to Sydney its Chief Conductor and Artistic Director designate David Robertson for two programs in July. Robertson will conduct Verdi s Requiem and two opera-in-concert performances of Wagner s Flying Dutchman with video and projections designed by S. Katy Tucker. Also in 2013, the Sydney Symphony is proud to be forging closer artistic and cultural ties with China through performances with Chinese conductor Long Yu, two special concerts with composer-conductor Tan Dun and the world premiere of a Sydney Symphony commissioned concerto by Zhao Jiping, featuring pipa musician Wu Man. In total, the Sydney Symphony will perform with more than 60 of the world s top artists during the 2013 season: conductors including Charles Dutoit, Kristjan Järvi and Mark Wigglesworth will be joined on stage by soloists such as violinists Arabella Steinbacher and Leila Josefowicz, pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Jonathan Biss and cellist Pieter Wispelwey. The visiting artists feature in 11 different subscription series, each offering audiences a distinctive experience of live classical music. At the heart of the season is the Ausgrid Master Series, which provides audiences with great music, familiar and new, from across the centuries. At the other end of the spectrum is the Sydney Symphony s eclectic Kaleidoscope series, which in 2013 includes Tan Dun conducting his Martial Arts Trilogy, Miguel Harth-Bedoya conducting the Labèque sisters piano duo in a Latin-fuelled program, Dame Edna Everage (and her alter ego Barry Humphries) narrating Saint-Saëns Carnival of the Animals and Prokofiev s Peter and the Wolf, and rounding-out the series, Australian composer Nigel Westlake joins forces with one of Australia s most successful independent artists, singer-songwriter Lior in a new work called Compassion, a symphony of songs that will unite the soulful power of Lior s voice with the radiance and vivd drama of Westlake s orchestral style. For the Sydney Symphony, 2013 is a year to celebrate the outstanding musical partnership that has been forged between the orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy over his years as Principal Conductor. It is a year for Sydney audiences to continue to enjoy the outstanding concerts he conducts as well as revel in the world-class artists and programs on offer throughout the year. 3 SydneySymphony.com

But that s just the beginning of this uninhibited and flamboyant piece. The words might have been written down by mediæval monks but the themes are strangely modern and absolutely secular: love, sex, food, alcohol, gambling and the whims of fortune. To begin, Long Yu will introduce Sydney to music by the composer for the Beijing Olympics. Chen Qigang s Forgotten Enchantments has been described as Ravel with a Chinese accent all beguiling harmonies and vivid orchestral colours.
