Bibliometric analysis for information scientists in the University of Tampere in 2012: some results and discussion on information sources Merja Hyödynmaa, Eija Poteri and Saija Tapio, with the assistance of Esa Hakala, Heli Vanamo and Tarja Wisakanto
Background The project: a part of library s services for researchers and ties with tools for and assessment of research. The partner: the School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Tampere. The data: from the publication register of the University, supplemented with publication information from Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and Google Scholar (GS).
Aims of the project 1. Find out how many publications the researchers of Information Sciences of Tampere University had Which types of publication they preferred 3. How many times the publications were cited in WoS, in Scopus, and in Google Scholar in How the most used publications are ranked in Julkaisufoorumi (The Finnish Publication Forum) 5. Increase the know-how regarding citation databases and bibliometric analysis in the Library 6. Strengthen contacts to scholars at the University
In this presentation We depict some results including the amount of citations and the list of most popular scientific journals and their ranking in the Finnish Publication Forum We discuss, how WoS, Scopus and GS performed as citation sources for information scientists
SIS Publications per year Year Publications Together 554 Disciplines of SIS Computer Science and Interactive Technology Information Studies and Interactive Media Mathematics and Statistics
Publication types included in the analysis Ax = Peer-reviewed, scientific articles or review articles in journals A3 = Articles in peer-reviewed books or composite works A4 = Peer-reviewed articles in conference proceedings B1 = International, non-peer-reviewed articles in journals B2 = Articles in international, non-peer-reviewed books or composite works B3 = Non-peer-reviewed articles in international conference proceedings C1 = Scientific monographs (international or domestic) G = Doctoral dissertation Codes applied from national classification for publication types by Ministry of Education and Culture
Publication types by years
Citations for international publications (without self-citations) Publication types Together Ax (pr journal article) A3 (pr book article) A4 (pr conference article) B1 (non-pr journal article) B2 (non-pr book article) B3 (non-pr conference article) C1 (monographs) Together
Citations for international and domestic publications (without self-citations) Databases Citations (without self-citations) Citations (without self-citations and overlap checked against other databases*) Web of Science Scopus Google Scholar Together * Scopus was checked against WoS; GS was checked against WoS and Scopus.

All publications - coverage in the separate databases WoS, Scopus & Google Scholar Database Number of publications Percentage Web of Science % Scopus % Google Scholar % Not found % All publications 554
Refereed conference proceedings - coverage in the databases WoS, Scopus & Google Scholar Database Number of refereed conference publications Percentage Web of Science* 2 1 % Scopus % Google Scholar % Not found % All refereed conference publications 257 *Conference Proceedings are not included in the WoS subscription of Tampere University Library
Unique and overlapping publications in WoS and Scopus (N=293) WoS (n=109) Scopus (n=282) 47 % of all publications (261/554) were covered by neither WoS nor Scopus; domestic publications like Finnish dissertations fell into this category
Conclusions We reached our aims: we got figures, experience and an opportunity to collaborate with scholars We proved the fact that information scientists publish a lot in conference proceedings, but however, conference articles do not gain as many citations as journal articles Scopus and GS seemed to be important data sources if information scientists want to do bibliometric analysis that is fair to them.
