Joining the British film industry at this pivotal time in its history on the wave of success and the threshold of a significant new phase has been one of the real privileges of taking on the direction of the London Film this year. The launch of The Film Policy Review in January 2012 generated vital and spirited dialogue across all sectors of the industry about how to best shape the future for film in the UK. The beginning of the 2012 s programming cycle was informed by this energy and passion, and the significant changes to the structure were born from it. Now, the London Film and our Industry Programme come hot on the heels of the launch of the s five year plan for supporting UK Film, Film Forever. The title of the plan speaks to both the desire to secure the longevity of our industry and the ambition to achieve this commercially and creatively. It describes an industry that already delivers as the British films in all sections of this year s line-up attest and an industry that is aspirational, strong and confident. We provide training and skills development through the intensive talent lab Think-Shoot- Distribute and support the transition of films into the UK marketplace through the Buyers and Sellers screenings and meetings. Panellists including producers, sales and marketing executives, financiers, publicists and distributors will be confronted by moderator Angus Finney with a set of unfolding events in the life of a feature project. They will have to act fast and think on their toes to take the project from inception to exhibition, as they are presented with challenges, dilemmas and opportunities familiar from the real world along the way. Market Place Live goes beyond the regular panel format, all the elements of the project are fictional made-up cast, director and producer, financing partners and distributors so panellists can speak freely about their reactions and thought processes. In addition as the story of the film unfolds, the panel will have no warning of the scenarios they are presented with. The panel will include Paul Brett (Prescience The King s Speech), Julia Short (The Works Wild Bill) and Samantha Horley (The Salt Company Killing Bono). Tackling UK Film Piracy: A Content Protection Workshop The Film Distributors Association and the Industry Trust, the consumer education body for the UK film, TV and video industry, will hold a special event for industry stakeholders on tackling UK film piracy. Addressing those working in the industry, the FDA will give a practical presentation on how to prepare an effective content protection plan, which will be followed by a presentation from the Industry Trust on how the industry is engaging with and educating consumers to raise awareness of the wealth of official services that are available and inspiring them to choose to watch film, TV and video content via official services. The discussion will include a Q&A session with senior industry figures. For more details please visit: bfi.org.uk/extranet Fri 12 Oct 10:00 16:00 Studio, Southbank Meet the Experts Filmmakers are invited to discuss their projects with a panel of industry veterans consisting of: Chair: David Wilkinson, CEO, Guerilla Films Maggie Ellis, Head of Production and Talent Development, Michael Ryan, Partner, GFM Films Richard Kurti & Bev Doyle, Kurti & Doyle The experts will answer questions and give advice to filmmakers who are embarking on feature production. Each filmmaker will have 30 minutes to seek help and advice as to how best to move their film project onto the next stage. These meetings are in confidence. The panel has had over 150 years experience between them developing, producing, financing, distributing, selling internationally and the marketing of feature films. Collectively, they have been involved in several hundred feature films (successes and flops alike) with a combined budget of almost $2 billion. This invaluable free advice would normally cost several thousand pounds in the commercial arena. The panel will give an honest view of each project. Too many filmmakers spend a great deal of time and money working on film ideas which will not succeed in the marketplace. As spaces are limited, the more details you can fill in on your application form, the better the chance of being chosen. Participants will examine their feature film project with course leaders and industry guests during the training week and over the following months. An evidence based report on the British public s views on film, prepared for the by Northern Alliance and Ipsos Media CT. The report provides in depth data on the films that really matter to them, why they watch them and the effect they have. It demonstrates how film moves and inspires the nation, how it excites the emotions and the intellect and how it influences the shape of our lives. LBFF focuses on developing 12 low budget first feature films with participants working in mixed nationality groups via a combination of peer-to-peer group work, tutorials from industry professionals and case studies. Participants are from the London Film School; La fémis, Paris; The Budapest Academy of Film and Theatre; Danish Film School. In 2013, UNATC, Bucharest and the dffb, Berlin will join the consortium. LBFF sets out to define the practical/aesthetic advantages each of the projects will gain from a specific low budget strategy getting clarity and value by developing scripts as blueprints for distinctive films. The forum also helps build industry networks as filmmakers navigate the worlds of European film development and financing. This session will expand on some ideas that animate the forum s work: the great generic breadth of positive low budget filmmaking, models of collaborative development and priorities all low budget filmmakers can share. Entry to the Market is strictly by application and subsequent invitation only. The successful Production Finance Market (PFM), held in association with the London Film, returns for a sixth year. The two-day event focuses on facilitating faceto-face meetings between producers and financiers from the international marketplace and the UK to encourage and foster new financing relationships. The 2011 market attracted almost 245m of production value and leading equity, hedge fund, tax, banking, and public and broadcaster financiers. With over 800 focused meetings over two days, delegates have paid overwhelming testimony to the strategic role the Market now plays in the annual film calendar. Over the last five years, the PFM has been directly responsible for getting a number of new features into production or on the way to being green-lit. The session will provide market data on recent day and date releases as well as contributions from producers, sales agents and distributors. It will tackle the following questions: Is day and date release a risk or an opportunity for independent European film and independent European professionals? As P&A costs continue to rise and independent films have shorter and shorter theatrical runs, will a theatrical release as the prime window of a film s exploitation hold in the future? What effect do window shifts have on the prefinancing of European works and revenue sharing between producers, distributors and exhibitors? Speakers include Jakub Duszynski (Gutek Film, Poland, Co-President of Europa Distribution), Sarah Calderon (The Film Agency, Spain) and Teun Hilte (Yellow Knife, Under the Milky Way, UK). The panel will be moderated by Wendy Mitchell (Screen, UK). Europa Distribution was founded in 2006 and has rapidly grown its membership to include 125 independent distributors in 26 countries. It has become a key voice championing Europe s independent film industry, and acts as a lobby and a think tank. To attend the panel please RSVP to indevents12@bfi.org.uk with Facing Windows in the subject line Wed 17 Oct 19:30 20:30 Reuben Library, Southbank The National Film and Television School in partnership with the 56th London Film presents A Boyz Own Story : A Case Study of the new British Film My Brother the Devil Welsh-Egyptian writerdirector Sally El-Hosaini s debut feature begins in familiar territory exploring the limited options of young British Arabs on the streets of Hackney, against the inevitable backdrop of gang violence and crime, but it swiftly develops into a boldly fresh and sensitive look at identity, masculinity and sexuality. It introduces a cast of new, young actors including James Floyd and Fady Elsayed, with strong support by French actor Said Taghmaoui (La Haine, Three Kings). Also of note are the moody score by Stuart Earl (graduate of the NFTS) and the arresting and visually poetic cinematography, which won a prize for DoP David Raedeker at Sundance. This event will provide an enlightening and in-depth overview of the production story of My Brother the Devil in the form of a panel discussion: director Sally El Hosaini will be joined by other members of the crew. But what are the best ways of managing this process? What are the tensions between creativity and big business? How do we protect and support creativity and risktaking? How do we develop new talent? And how do we avoid development hell? This event brings together the latest research and a panel of experts (including key UK development funders, commissioners, and development executives) to show how producers and writers nurture their stories through the long development process; and discuss what really happens when a script is written. The event will be chaired by Peter Bloore, senior lecturer in creativity at UEA, screenwriter, and author of the new book The Screenplay Business: Managing Creativity and Script Development in the Film Industry. The fourth edition of the annual Film s Forum explores the changing landscape in the wake of the announcement of the s five year plan, Film Forever.
