THE EUROPEAN TOP 100 (SINGLES/ALBUMS): In many European countries one chart is recognised by the music industry as the" OFFICIAL' hitparade and is therefore used for the compilation of the EUROPEAN TOP100. However there are other COuntneS where various charts are in existence and often equally important. For these countess we have compiled a number of these charts into one representing the sales in that market. Each chart position for every country then receives, relevant to that position. an equal points rating which is in turn multiplied by a factor determined through the latest known sales percentage of total singes (or album) sales which that country holds in relation to the rest of Europe. Them are different percentages for singles and albums. HIP HOPPING THROUGH EUROPE What disco was for the seventies, Breakdancing surely is for the eighties. Grown out of the N.Y. ghetto's of the South Bronx and popularized during the last two years, Europe has now also had its breakdance hits with the Sugar Hill Gang's Rappers Delight, Herbie Hancock's Rock It (together with Grandmixer D.ST.), The Message from Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Hey You by Rock Steady Crew, Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals, Freeeze withl.o.u. and recently Break Machine's Streetdance. Almost simultaneously, two movies about this phenomenon, have been released, Beat Street and Breakin' (or Breakdance or even Breakstreet, depending on the particular country). Breakdancing first gained national attention when it was featured in the hit motion picture Flashclanoe. But now both movies give it a spotlight of its own. Although in both movies the storyline is quite simple, it shows us a culture that has really contributed to both disco and pop music. The technic f scratching has become a normal producijcr' immick in popsongs of which a r xample is the remix done by Nile Rogers in Duran Duran's The Reflex. Dj's from Manhattan like John "Jellybean" Benitez have mixed records of popgroups such as New Order, Cabaret Voltaire, Kajagoogoo and even Elvis Costello and have in this way enlarged the scope of popmusic. Rap has infiltrated pop (Blondie's Backfired/Raptured, Tom Tom Club's Wordy Rappinghood etc.) and in fact the launch of the 12" with all its remixes and extended versions owes a major part of its existence to the black dj's and rappers who were looking for ways to extend the beat on the dance floor (the very, way for the industry to make up for a B-side in a rather cheap way). And although the hip hop culture was already existing and flourishing for a few years in N.Y., it always needs a catalyser to make it acceptable for wider audiences. What The Rolling Stones did for rhythm & blues, The Police for reggae music. Malcolm McLaren has done for the scratch/breakdance culture outside The US. What was known for already a few years in the discotheques in N.Y. became intemationnaly wide spread after the release of his first solo single Buffalo Gals. Says Malcolm McLaren in one of the interviews he did after the world succes of the single: "It is one of the most rootsy folk music of the moment with a direct line to the kids on the streets with their ghetto blasters". Another example is Jeffrey Daniel, ex Shalamar (now performing a major part in the Starlight Express) who, already back in '82, amazed the audiences on Top Of The Pops with his body poppin'. SUICIDE It would take one several years to plow through the ever changing terminology and various styles of the street dancer. With each individual performance comes a different nuance which can be copied and formalized into a whole new dance. Dancers spin on their heads, elbows, backs and toes, twist their bodies into nuts, make other assorted outrageous manouvres, that sometimes appear to defy the laws of physicality and gravity. The moves are identified by such street based terms as Electric Boogie, Smurf, Spider Walk, Suicide, Bottom Rocking, Floating, Uprocking, Sweep Swipe, Backspin, Track Freeze, Downrocking, Turtle and Headspins. Each B -Boy (male breakdancer) has a unique move. As one of the guys of Rock Steady Crew puts it: "We're always coming up with new ideas. Sometimes I do crazy unexpected things. I put together combinations not even my guys have seen. I know how to get the audience to respond. You have to take risks": Where in the past competitions between different gangs could end up in fights, breaking has become a way of handling aggression. Instead of fighting you would say: "Let's break against each other and you'd make the opponent look stupid and that would shut him up", as in the words of one breakdancer. According to one of the producers of the Breakdance movie, David Zito, street dancing roots have developed from the most prevalent and accessable cultural source, namely television and its saturday mornings cartoons. "Cartoons were one of the most original sources for some of the moves", he states. Bugs Bunny was the first one to do what they call "The King Tut Move" (one of those angular formations done with the hands). Lots of the inspiration for street dance comes from the simplest sources. And although its movements looks as though they are throw -sways they are more controlled than most people think. The non -dancer doesn't realize how much control and concentration it takes until you start breaking it down and learning it. SEE PAGE 5 3

After a well deserved holiday, the gills will start a tour in Germany for the Dutch Army Boys. THE DOTS will appear at Parkpop Festival in Den Haag, 1st of July * JAMIE RAE, 16 years old Glaswegian singing sensation, signed to Stiff recently and released his first single She's The One, the song was specially written for him by JIMMY O'NEILL, and produced by PETER COLUNS, (known from his work for NIK KERSHAW, THE BELLE STARS and TRACY ULLMAN) * STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN had his 2nd album released, entitled Couldn't Stand The Weather * JASON & THE SCORCHERS have confirmed to play Milton Keynes on 21st July. More dates to be announced soon * Formerly known as POGUE MAHONE, the band are now calling themselves THE POGUES, after the B.B.C. discovered that POGUE MAHONE was Gaelic for Kiss My Arse and banned them from airplay. Dark Streets Of London, the bands first lndie single was released a few weeks ago and has now been picked up by Stiff Records * THE BELLIES are finally ready to bounce back with a brand new single 80's Romance, in the shops on June 18th. The single has been produced by PETER COLLINS (top 5 hit Sign Of Times). The band have spent the last few months finishing off their 2nd album with producer ANNE DUDLEY and this will be released later this summer * The end of this month brings a new single from TRACY (ULLMAN), entitled Sunglasses and another re-recording of an old song originally recorded by SANDY POSEY! In July she'll be returning to the studio to record her 2nd album for autumn release * KING KURT have a new single ready for July release, called Banana Banana - simple love song about Tarzan and Jane (and gorillas which should provide us with another fun video) * BRONSKI BEAT, a London based electric funk trio, (signed to London Records), released their single entitled Smalltown Boy, something which really demands listening tool! * The MIGHTY WAN! released their 1st single on Beggars Banquet on June 15th, entitled Come Back totherwise known as PETE WYLIE). He's spent the last 18 months working and recording his forthcoming album A Word To The Wise Guy - due for release July 13th. Come Back is the first track to be taken for release as single * A THOUSAND MILES OF SUNSHINE (a 6 piece band from London together since February of this year) are the latest signing to Go! Discs. Their debut single Jimmy Highlife has been released June 15th, both as a 7 and 12" form (Smiles work wonders!!) Pretending to be something you're not GO DOWN: An action of a breaker doing a battle with the possibility of getting 'burned' HANDGLIDE: Balancing on one's hand while spinning the body. The move is usually performed with a glove on HEADSPIN: Spinning on one's head upsidedown, hands not touching the ground SHALACKERS. Very large shoes, or big feet THROW THE BASE: Rapping or talking to someone TROLL: An ugly girl TURTLE In breakdancing, all the body weight is supported on both hands, elbows pressed against the body, maintaining a horizontal position, without feet touching the floor. The move is performed by remaining in this position shifting the body weight from hand to hand, and moving about the floor very quickly, walking, spinning on the hands UP ROCKING: A war -like dance, object: to take out your opponent without physical contact The physical strength required in the upper torso to perform the dives and spins necessary for breakdancing, makes men more able to do the i LA* break dance routines. Women are generally excluded from these specific atlethic acrobatics (it was in fact one of the Rock Steady Crew members in disguise who performed Jennifer Beal's spins in the movie 4- "Flashdance"). One exception is Ana "Lolly -Pop" Sanchez who is one uct of the featured dancers in the movie Breakdance. She portrays the only female breakdancing gangmember and she has been a professional dancer since the age of sixteen. The style of street dancing varies from one geographic locoation to another, so they say. 'Locking' and 'popping' is believed to have originated in California while breakin' comes from New York's South Bronx. Whatever the source, there's no doubt that the "hip hop" originated from the street. Young people who r want to add their own sounds to a record, their own colours to a wall. to itcis People who get their identity through exercising their body.
