1 February 2018 enewsletter Volume 5, Issue 2 Voices: Black History Month Communities are comprised of a diversity of experiences and perspectives and the voices that emerge from those experiences and perspectives. We believe that these voices make for a richer, more meaningful experience for all. Join Phoenix Public Library in enjoying and learning from the many voices of our community through monthly themes meant to educate, entertain and inspire. In February, we will celebrate Black voices in celebration of Black History Month. Visit the library website in early February for Black History Month programs as well as books, films, and books celebrating Black voices throughout history and up through the present day. Find materials for kids and adults alike. Know a young artist? Now through February 16, kids in grades K-12 can enter a contest in celebration of Black voices for Black History Month and beyond. 2 Just Read: L O V E We at Phoenix Public Library want you to maintain your goal to read for leisure and/or reading for self-education. Just Read is a come-as-you-are, read-what-you-like online book club and so much more! Each month, we will announce a book club genre or theme on our website. Read what you like within this genre or theme. Participate throughout the month by posting on social media, tagging Phoenix Public Library and #justreadppl to share, discuss and recommend your book choice. 3 Don t Be a Victim!: FREE Self-Defense Classes Don t put it off any longer. Learn how to defend yourself with this FREE 2-hour selfdefense class. Learn the art of Kubotan with instructor Jui Chiu. This class is offered to everyone ages 8 and up and is facilitated in partnership with the City of Phoenix Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Registration is required. 4 Attend an Apprenticeship Showcase Unsure what career options are available to you? Would you like a career training option where you get paid from day one and graduate debtfree? High school seniors and their parents are invited to learn about apprenticeship programs at this Apprenticeship Showcase. This info session will have representatives from a variety of industries offering apprenticeship options that provide high wage, high-demand employment opportunities in a short period of time without the need to take out student loans. Pizza will be provided! Apprenticeship programs are growing beyond the traditional manufacturing and construction industries and can now be pursued in healthcare, energy, information technology, and transportation industries. With an apprenticeship, students can gain hands-on training with the potential of earning college credits. In some cases, these classes may be paid for by employers. College Depot at Phoenix Public Library is proud to offer personalized advice and guidance to those interested in pursuing learning, education, and employment possibilities through an apprenticeship. 5 Calling young artists: Black Voices Art Contest Palo Verde Library is hosting an art contest to celebrate Black History Month. Selected entries will be featured on Phoenix Public Library's website and social media. The details: Young artists are invited to draw an important person or event celebrating Black voices. Artists in grades K-12 may enter. Each artist may enter one drawing. Illustrations can be in any medium: crayon, marker, colored pencil, watercolor, etc. Pencil-only illustrations are not recommended. The more colorful, the better! Artworks should be horizontal orientation, no larger than 11"x17" on white paper. No lined or colored paper. Entries may be submitted to: Palo Verde Library 4402 N. 51st. 6 eresource Feature: Kanopy If you're interested in independent, international, classic, or documentary films, you're in luck. Have you already tried out Kanopy? Great news Beginning in February, Phoenix Public Library customers will now be able to check out 10 films (increasing from 5) each month. You can stream over 30,000 films from hundreds of popular producers such as films from the Criterion Collection, The Great Courses, and PBS, as well as thousands of independent filmmakers - on every topic imaginable. Grab your Phoenix Public Library card and learn how to get started with Kanopy. Collection Development: Love Your Library! Most people who work in or for a library are also customers of the library. After the closure of Burton Barr Central Library last July, many of the staff who call Burton Barr Central Library their home discovered just how much they depend on the library as customers. No longer can we run up to the 5 th floor to grab a cookbook during our lunch break, or drop off a DVD on our way into the lobby, or pick up our holds as we leave for the day. This month the Collection Development staff share what we miss about working IN a library, and what library services we love most. Special thanks to the Adult Services staff for their contributions this month.

7 Let s start with the bread and butter of the library: books, DVDs, music. The Collection. Whether physical items or digital, making sure that customers can find what they are looking for is very important to the Collection Development staff. The online catalog is a great place to start when looking for a title. Each time you search you are viewing the collection for all 17 branches. If you want to narrow down to your own branch, you can do that, too. But, don t stop there. While most ebooks and streaming movies appear in the library s general catalog, the full collection can be found in each platform. This means, a search in the Greater Phoenix Digital Library will show all ebook titles available for your Kindle and a search in Hoopla or Kanopy, will display all the movies, documentaries or TV shows available for streaming. And, if you just gotta have that extremely popular Best Pick title? Try Axis 360. To make the most of this Best epicks collection, visit often and check the "Recently Returned" tab to see what is available now. Beyond the reading/viewing collection, one of the services or collections most missed by library staff who now have offices away from a library is the Culture Pass collection. Staff who find themselves with an afternoon off, or having to entertain unexpected guests would browse the Culture Pass kiosk after work in hopes of FREE admission for two people at participating arts and cultural institutions. Did you know you can call the library with a question, or send a query online? Customers can request books to add to the collection or find more information about computer classes, how ebooks work, how they can make donations to the library, or which branch is closest to them by using the Ask Us service. The wonderful people in Adult Services at Burton Barr Central Library share some of the most frequent or recent conversations they ve had in the Call Center Here's what s happening in the Call Center: Lots of people received new devices for the holidays (again) and are calling to find out about our ebook services. Phoenix Public Library has a whole host of ebook and eresource services. Check out the elibrary page or attend a lab or class on devices at your local branch to learn more.

8 Recently, Call Center staff talked to a young man with a new business, who was very excited to hear about the ways that Reference USA can be used to research potential customers. The library gets a lot of entrepreneurs at the beginning of the year as they are thinking about pushing their business ideas forward. Don t forget about central whose mission it is to offer every entrepreneur and small business owner the tools they need to start and grow their dream! Call Center staff also talked with a woman about the Foundation Directory Online, which is currently only available at Harmon Library. Like many of the resources provided by the library, there is great interest in this database because it may be cost prohibitive for nonprofit customers to subscribe or purchase on their own. A lot of people don t know about 24 hour holds, and are thrilled to find out that someone can make sure a title is on the shelf and hold it for them, before they drive all the way across town. This isn t something you can do online. Instead, if you see an item in the catalog showing that it is currently available/on the shelf at one branch, you can call the Call Center. They will double check with the branch. If the item is on the shelf, the staff at that branch will set it aside for you until you can get it (within 24 hours, of course). Tax season is upon us, and how to get tax forms is a popular question at this time of year. The Phoenix Public Library has Arizona forms to reproduce in binders at each branch. Library staff can also provide information about the websites, phone numbers, and physical locations for IRS and AZ Department of Revenue. The Call Center is a busy reference point with customers asking if the library has computers to use and how much it costs, if the library has faxing or has meeting rooms for public use. Customers have been asking about the Arizona Mobile Home Parks Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, if the library has classic or recent movies (yes and yes), what programming is offered at the branches, and what types of material can be checked out. So, whether you work for the library or not, there are many reasons to love your library.

9 Of course, we wouldn t be Collection Development if we didn t have some reading recommendations: I want to praise circulating magazines. Sometimes I am not in the mood to commit to a book or film. Most of our branches have circulating copies of People Magazine and many carry Oprah. Although not renewable, I still like to leaf through the physical magazines but when traveling I enjoy downloading magazines from RB Digital and Flipster. Kathleen through it! Danielle I just picked up the new cookbook, Dining In: Highly Cookable Recipes by Alison Roman is here and I need to step up my home cooking game. The recipes in the book are interesting while also being approachable. The book itself is very well designed and has gorgeous food photography. The author introduces each recipe in a warm, funny voice and gives several variations for ingredients. Alison has a way of taking familiar ingredients and making them into something new and fresh. I m looking forward to cooking my way Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. A historical fiction debut novel which reminds us about a time in US history which many would rather forget, and provides encouragement that we don t make the same mistakes in our own time and place.
