3 Introduction The WRITE! Foundations and Models for Profi ciency 4-point rubrics cover all the requirements for good writing. Working with the WRITE! rubrics provides students with the framework for understanding and utilizing other rubrics that may have different formats and/or point scales. After students have gained experience and confi dence working with the WRITE! 4-point rubrics, they may wish to transfer that experience to the 6-point rubrics that follow in this booklet. These rubrics may be used to evaluate and guide a variety of forms of writing. Charts are included to depict the correlations of the original score (based on the 4-point rubric) to the adapted score (based on the 6-point rubric). 1
4 6-Point Rubric: Books C H The following rubric may be applied to WRITE!, Books C H. This rubric may be used with each writing genre presented in the series. 4 Score of 6: the writer responds clearly and effectively to the prompt. almost always uses the correct forms of words. almost always uses capitalization, punctuation, and indentation correctly. almost always uses clear and complete sentences. uses a wide and appropriate variety of sentence types and lengths. introduces the subject or topic clearly at the beginning of the passage. creates a clear and evident beginning, middle, and ending. almost always begins a new paragraph for each new idea or person speaking. includes specific or colorful words that enhance the effect of the passage. if a title is needed, creates an interesting title that relates directly to the passage. uses many interesting or specific details that are presented in a clear and meaningful order. Score of 5: the writer responds clearly to the prompt. usually uses the correct forms of words. usually uses capitalization, punctuation, and indentation correctly. usually uses clear and complete sentences. uses an appropriate variety of sentence types and lengths. introduces the subject or topic at the beginning of the passage. creates a clear beginning, middle, and ending. usually begins a new paragraph for each new idea or person speaking. includes specific or colorful words that improve the effect of the passage. if a title is needed, creates an interesting title that relates to the passage. uses interesting or specific details that are presented in a clear and meaningful order. Score of 4: the writer responds to the prompt. often uses the correct forms of words. often uses capitalization, punctuation, and indentation correctly. often uses clear and complete sentences. uses some variety in sentence types and lengths. includes the subject or topic in the passage. creates a beginning, middle, and ending. often, but not always, begins a new paragraph for each new idea or person speaking. includes specific or colorful words that are appropriate for the passage. if a title is needed, creates a title that relates to the passage.
5 6-Point Rubric: Books C H Score of 3: the writer responds to the prompt in a general way. uses the incorrect forms of some words. has some errors in capitalization, punctuation, or indentation. uses some run-on sentences or sentence fragments. uses two sentence types at the most. introduces a subject or topic somewhere in the passage. creates a weak beginning, middle, or ending. sometimes fails to begin a new paragraph for each new idea or person speaking. uses some specific or colorful words to improve the effect of the passage. if a title is needed, creates a title that relates somewhat to the passage. uses details, but they are presented in an unclear way. Score of 2: the writer responds to the prompt, but only loosely. uses the incorrect forms of several words. has several errors in capitalization, punctuation, or indentation. uses several run-on sentences or sentence fragments. uses one or two sentence types only. attempts to present a subject or topic, but it is too broad or limited for the passage. creates an unclear beginning, middle, or ending. often fails to begin a new paragraph for each new idea or person speaking. uses few specific or colorful words that improve the effect of the passage. if a title is needed, creates a title that relates only generally to the passage. uses weak or unrelated details. Score of 1: the writer fails to respond to the prompt. uses the incorrect forms of many words. has many errors in capitalization, punctuation, or indentation. uses many run-on sentences or sentence fragments. uses one type of sentence only. fails to successfully introduce a subject or topic. has no clear beginning, middle, or ending. usually fails to begin a new paragraph for each new idea or person speaking. uses mostly words that do not enhance or improve the effect of the passage. if a title is needed, creates a title that doesn t relate to the passage, or may have no title at all. uses few details or details that are confusing or unrelated. 5
