1 Career Research Paper Instructions Overview You will write a research paper about a career of interest. Papers must be written in MLA format. Papers must have at least 700 words. Students must follow all directions. Papers will be graded according to the rubric (see provided rubric). You will submit 5_ bibliography cards. These are due on Thursday, March 15. In your paragraphs, you will include (cite) from 5-7 of your sources. o You must use MLA citation style. Examples will be provided. Required Sections of the Paper A title page (see provided sample) An Outline (see provided sample) Your paragraphs (see provided sample) A Works Cited page (see provided sample) Formatting Instructions Papers must be typed in Calibri font, size 12. Papers must be double spaced. Follow directions concerning your page numbers. Make your pages look like the sample pages. NOTE: You must cite the information you find in the sources. If you do not cite the information (show where you got it), you have plagiarized. Plagiarized papers receive a zero for points. A discipline form will be sent to the office. Students will be provided instructions about citing sources in the correct MLA style.

3 How to Make a MLA Outline The outline of a paper includes the information in the paper, in the order it is written. Set it to double space first. Give the outline the title of Outline. Center it. You need a thesis statement first. This is ONE sentence that states the main idea of your entire paper. Your main headings in your paper are marked with Roman numerals. Subheadings are marked with numbers. A sample outline is on the next page.

Attractive Features D. Negative Aspects 1. Reason for Negativity 2. Assistance II. Training See how everything lines up? Make your outline look like this one. Make sure your outline goes in the same order as this one. Change your personal career choice in the thesis statement, though. Also, when you type your outline, don t include this box, of course. III. IV. A. Required Education 1. High School Diploma 2. Post-Secondary Education B. Placement Earnings A. Salary B. Benefits Career Outlook A. Growth B. Need Your outline must include these subjects in this order. So, this is what you are supposed to read about (here at school AND at home for homework). Make note cards about these things.

5 Information about Your 1 st page of Paragraphs You will need to number your pages in the top-right corner. The page number includes our last name and the page number. You will include your title again. You will indent your paragraphs. Your paragraphs must be in the same order as your outline. Your outline did not include the introduction paragraph or the conclusion paragraph. Don t forget to make them. They do not get listed on your outline, though. Here s a sample of what the first page should look like: 1 O Brien Title Again The introduction paragraph goes here. Again, the introduction does not get listed on the outline. We know you will have an introduction in the paper; there s no need to list it on the outline. Remember, good paragraphs have at least five sentences; try to get even more. How do you get more sentences? Spend some time actually thinking about your topic outside of the classroom. Also, try to end your introduction paragraph with the thesis statement from the outline. It will look really good here. After you are finished with your introduction paragraph, start typing according to Roman numeral I. Make sure you follow the order of the outline.

However, you will have sources from the monographs and books, too. They will need to be alphabetized by the first word unless it is A, AN, or THE. This is a list of all the sources you put into your paper. They are your bibliography cards. Make sure you type them correctly. Don t forget to indent all lines after the first one.
