It is ABC's turn to organise Wayzgoose this year and the competition will be held as part of that function. From the Archives Here is some information from our archives, reprinted in part from New Zealand CRAFTS the Craft Council Magazine 29 Spring 1989: The Association of Book Crafts was formed in March of this year having evolved out of an informal group of people interested in book binding, marbling, lithography, printing and related activities. Hobby classes in bookbinding at the Auckland Technical Institute were mainly for the retired as they were held during the working day. But it was apparent that there were people about with a more serious interest in book crafts, it was natural that they should get together to share ideas, knowledge and problems. In January 1988 the Waikato Polytechnic Summer School organizers were asked to include bookbinding in their programme. This was done and Peter Goodwin, the Head Binder at the Auckland Public Library, was asked to tutor the class. Fifteen eager people spent five days mastering the basics and putting in long hours binding lots of books. In May a meeting of twelve people in Auckland established that in future they would meet every two months at alternative members homes. Our tutor from the Summer School Peter Goodwin was approached to be Chairman of this group. A further book binding course was again set down for January 1989 at the Waikato Polytechnic. This time Allan Sayer from the A.I.T. was the tutor. Finally in March of this year it was decided to form the Association of Book Crafts. The Association assists members with equipment, either obtaining it or building it, runs a small materials purchasing scheme, and generally helps with problems and information as well as practical workshops. For those members who do book repairs, but do not want to set themselves up to use heat set tissue, there are two alternatives from Conservation Supplies that might be of interest: 1. Document Repair Tape - 25mmx30metre roll in a dispensing pack $ Transparent Mending Tissue - 12mm x 15 metre roll in a dispensing pack $ We will order as required. Repairs to a tight back We have in the library a series of helpful notes to aid in the tricky re attachment of boards on a tight back binding where getting off the old spine covering is almost impossible without damage to it. You can request copies of these notes from John Sansom, Librarian. Wheat starch paste "Messy but worth the effort" I have just cooked up some wheat starch paste according to the formulae supplied. I found I needed to add more water during the cooking process and to put the finish product through a sieve to get rid of the lumps. I can remember bookbinders years ago saying you had to sieve it. Think of the long process we used before microwaves!! BUT the final result is worth the effort. John Sansom And now for something completely different! This is actually a 152,864 sq. ft, 485 parking building adjacent to the recently renovated downtown Kansas City library. An exterior treatment creates the illusion of a row of books, paying homage to great literary contributors of our time while adding whimsy to the cityscape. The Community Bookshelf is a striking feature of Kansas City's downtown. The book spines, which measure approximately 25 feet by 9 feet, are made of signboard mylar. The shelf showcases 22 titles reflecting a wide variety of reading interests as suggested by Kansas City readers and then selected by the Kansas City Public Library Board of Trustees. 2 ABC Newsletter 3 May - June ABC Newsletter 3 May - June 2009

3 Pam & I edited and produced the newsletters for a number of years until we handed over to Jonathan Bennett at the end of July/August 2002 newsletter. Marthin Maré My newsletters are all in a magazine file, with the latest one nearest to the computer. But in about 1995 I bound some. It was a competition for ABC members to bind at least two years of ABC Newsletters in an appropriate style, and was the first time I had entered any binding in a competition. The newsletter sheets were fixed in a brown concertina spine. Brown covered boards had front ABC titling. Both front and back covers had photocopied extracts from a glossary of bookbinding terms. The whole book was strengthened with two wide dark brown tapes. Bill Downie was the judge. The winners were: 1st Elizabeth Steiner 2nd Wayne Smith 3rd Marthin Maré Highly commended Andrew Babe Elizabeth Steiner Note: Elizabeth suggested that I look at the July/August 1995 Newsletter for the judges comments so I requested two books from the library (see picture top right). Bill said when judging books consisting of single leaves I have taken into consideration the difficulties such books can present in contrast to the traditional sewn book. Generally I found the entries of a good standard. The varied styles of binding and materials used presented a refreshing challenge. The newsletters made for wonderful reading - I am almost tempted to start copying out old articles to recycle for my newsletters! Ed. Left: Newsletters bound by Peter Goodwin in sage green and black buckram with gold tooling and titles. Right: Newsletters bound by John Sansom in brown parchment and buckram with gold titles on the spine. I bound my first batch of newsletters up to the year 2000 and donated them to the ABC library for reference. My next batch ( when complete at the end of this year) will be reduced to all single sheets as there is a mixture of single and folio copies. These will be lumbecked and bound into hard cover and also donated to our library Members might not know that there is Act of Parliament that requires all bodies, societies, groups etc to preserve their records for future reference by historians and researchers. Peter Goodwin Note: Peter Goodwin's DVD on repairing the humble paper back is no. 1PG in our library. It details how to bind single sheets into either a limp or case binding. Emil Lumbeck invented the fan glue binding process in 1930, and his son Hans Ehlermann produced hand binding units and later semiautomatic perfect binders using the fan binding process with PVA glues in the 60s and 70s. Ed. Equipment & materials We are getting enquiries for the Japanese screw punch mentioned in the last newsletter. We only order when we have orders for ten. If you are interested let John Sansom know. The cost is expected to be between $55 and $60 with 5 bits from 1mm up to 5mm diameter. Plans for the future are not ambitious. However we would welcome any new members with a genuine interest in learning crafts associated with books, and we feel that binding competitions and exhibitions of work would serve to stimulate interest and provide an incentive to improve skills and standards. Ed Hutchins at the Secrets of Paper Animation workshop Ed Hutchins Secrets of Paper Animation 4 April NorthArt, Auckland The title of this workshop gives only a hint of the work to be accomplished. Ed gave a brief introduction before handing out sheets of light weight card with all the cutting lines ready marked, which meant that we made samples of six different animation techniques. All the pages when assembled are double sided, with the animation engineering hidden between. These are not POP-UPs, they require the viewer to be involved in activating the movement. The ones we made showed: an object that could be turned 90 degrees pivoting on a central point, and worked by moving a lever tab along a curved slit in the page. a circular disc inserted between the two sides of the page, and held in place with a clever use of weaving a small piece of card through slits in the centre of the page. One or two holes are cut in the page to expose the images on the disc as they are moved in a circular manner. a tab at the side of the page that could be pulled to show object moving behind the opening in the page, a window or a door perhaps. an object drawn on a card moving across the page by pulling a tab so that it obscures some of the underlying image and exposes other parts of the image. Perhaps a car that leaves a trail of exhaust, or an animal that leaves foot pints in the snow. a tab that could be pulled this time to cause a door like flap to open and shut. Hiding or exposing something, or perhaps a butterfly opening and shutting it s wings. a tab at the side of the page that combined two methods of movement, causing one object to pivot while the other moves horizontally across the page. The possibilities that these devices make available will surely start showing up in new work by members, either as special cards or combined in books. They may be associated with children's books, but are equally if not more intriguing to adults, especially if you are interested in the hidden or secret mechanism behind the page. We all concentrated on putting together each new page as Ed handed them out, leaving very little time for chatter. Some people managed to make complicated coloured pages and others concentrated on the mechanics. At the end of the workshop each of the books was assembled in a wrap around cover, and displayed. Ed then went through each one and added ideas and suggestions. It was a great day and we all have plenty of material to work with, now it s a case of matching the ideas and mechanisms to present a story. 4 Unfolding nature of books March NorthArt, Auckland On an evening late in March, some thirty book artist enthusiasts gathered at NorthArt gallery on the North Shore for a pre workshop presentation by Ed Hutchins. The presentation followed a line the unfolding nature of books. In part 1 An Unfolding Life Ed led us through the journals of his grandmother, a Froebel teacher (I know about Froebel, my mother was also a Froebel teacher), from all the all American Marine to Gay Rights Activist a life time of experiences to draw upon for ideas. We were then shown in film, a selection of his books, from funky to serious, marvels of paper engineering, architecture and solving the mathematical problems of making the whole structure work. And finally Ed led us through his small apartment in New York where everything had its place and bedding, tables and seating somehow managed to fold in on itself to provide living and working space. At the end of the presentation Ed brought out the books which had featured in the film and the biggest surprise was how small they were, little gems of thought which fitted into the palm of the hand. I did not go to the workshops but I am sure that they would have been inspirational and it is very exciting to be able to have overseas artists visit us and talk about their work and expand the book artists professional development. Julienne Francis Home Study Programme: EBRU Marbling We have purchased the latest programme from the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. This was produced by Shelagh Smith and Video Production by Ellen Spears This is described as the most comprehensive home study marbling course currently available. It consists of a 160 page manual (including 63 colour and 43 black & white illustrations) and three instructional DVDs. With three hours of viewing. While the emphasis is on water colour marbling there are in addition short sections on oil colour, acrylic and gouache marbling and marbling on fabric, clay and wood. Thank you to all those members who expressed an interest in this programme which convinced us we should buy it.if you want to join the queue to see this let the Librarian know as soon as possible. Library Review I have just parceled up the Marbling Home Study Course ready to post tomorrow. I have enjoyed every minute of it and am inspired to get more things together to have a go. The first DVD is crammed with information and at times I thought I wish she would show us that instead of just saying it. There seemed to be an awful lot to take in at once. However the second and third DVDs were absolutely delightful and everything fell into place. A very worthwhile, informative and enjoyable addition to ABC's Library Hilary Gorringe-Crole For interesting marbled papers check out Australian Liz Zylinski of Liz Zed Creations at: And support the people of Bangladesh. have historically dictated many of the sizes and proportions of the book. Traditional bindings are extremely varied however and include both ancient and modern methods. The use of valuable materials such as leather and hand made paper in the construction will improve the value of the book. The bookbinder is considered to be a craftsman. Art Turning the traditional craft of bookbinding in to an expressive art form that challenges the traditional definition of what constitutes a book. Contemporary artists see books as tools for recording and transmitting ideas, information, images and stories. While there is a continuing tradition of emphasis on structure and technique, all other components are up for re-interpretation. Art books generally still function like a book ie open up and present a sequence of images, words or ideas. Art books invariably tend to be handmade although machines such as inkjet printers are deployed in their manufacture. Art books also tend to expand the collection of book forms to incorporate boxes, slipcovers and portfolios. The art bookbinder is considered to be a book artist. Regardless of the form, a book binder needs to be trained in the various traditional techniques and tool use, and have significant experience in making books to be successful in either form. Reader replies Last newsletter a reader wrote in asking for suggestions on how to bind back copies of this newsletter. Here are the many creative and wonderful ideas readers sent in. Editor Stored in box on shelf in office. One day I will get around to binding them!!!!! Con Anderson I was a founding member of ABC and have received the newsletters ever since they were printed. I have always kept about 2 years of them in a spring folder that I made at A.T.I. (as it was earlier) and then store them in plastic bags. I can always refer back to them if necessary. I attended classes at A.T.I. starting in 1983 under the tutorship of Bill Downie for quite some years until he left. I am too busy to find time to bind them as I do voluntary work sometimes several day a week, also belong to several organisations where I attend meetings and outings plus running a home. I do still bind whenever I can get some time but it is usually mending books these days. I hope you get some interesting answers. Jocelyn Windsor My newsletters are stored in my filing cabinet. Rather boring. Rob Hunt I just use ring binders, 2 years per binder and dated on the spine. They are easily removed if one is needed for a project or whatever. Marie Thomas I have bound all newsletters from day 1 onwards in the format shown below. The first newsletter I hold is dated April/May The single pages were bound along the spine using saw cuts and threads glued and then binding the text block as a flat back book using crash canvas on the boards with purple buckram on the spine, corners and ABC inlaid into the crash canvas. 4 ABC Newsletter 3 May - June ABC Newsletter 3 May - June 2009

5 Preservation and Conservation for Libraries and Archives, a review Colyn Wohlmut Grant Supports Research on Letterpress Art & Craft Betty Bright 2009 Bind-O-Rama: An open virtual exhibition Profile This month: Shuna Giles of New Plymouth Shuna with her beloved dog Suede Shuna has lived in New Zealand since 1996 but is originally from England and has travelled extensively during her life. She has lived and worked in the USA, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and The Sultanate of Oman. How long have you been an ABC member? Three months. What do you most enjoy about being an ABC member? I think the newsletter is excellent. I have already been in contact by with some members and am looking forward to meeting them. It is also wonderful to be able to purchase bookbinding items which are impossible to source locally. How would you describe your skills and experience as a book binder? I came to learn bookbinding by a circuitous route. I was studying fashion at Wanganui UCOL in 2003 when Yoka Van Dyk came to give us a one day workshop in simple bookbinding and presentation techniques. I was fascinated! I signed up for the Wanganui Summer School seven day intensive courses with Yoka in 2007 and 2009 and was hooked. I have a great deal to learn but as I keep practising I am improving. I wish to combine my interests in drawing and textile arts with bookbinding. Where could readers see examples of your work? I am working on a mixed media exhibition for the Real Tart Gallery in New Plymouth. I will let you know when it opens. Can you tell us about your worst book/ binding experience? I am sure it is probably the same as most people when they are learning and that is measurements for the block somehow not fitting the case. What other interests and hobbies do you have? I play tennis competitively. I go tramping. I believe keeping fit is very important. I use my creativity both professionally and for pleasure. I enjoy making items to commission and for exhibitions but I also undertake embroidery, dressmaking, drawing and painting for pleasure. I particularly like threedimensional work. What is your favourite book? I do not have a favourite but I am fascinated by books on historical clothing and botanical art. What is your favourite quote? I do not have one - there are too many from which to choose. What is your occupation? I work part-time as a nurse in a private hospital and part-time as an artist. Discussion forum I was recently asked to explain the difference between an art bind and a traditional bind. Below is my answer but it got me thinking what would other ABC members have said????? Let me know by and I ll print the replies in the next newsletter. Terrie Reddish, Editor Traditional Book binding is an ancient craft that uses age old technical procedures to ideally create a technically faultless construction to prescribed, or traditional, standards. The resulting book might also be considered a work of art in its own right. Traditional can describe both hand made and machine bound books. It is intrinsically linked to the craft of printing which may, or may not, Around the country Auckland Chapter These are the books our late patron gave to us. It illustrates his beautiful onlay work using different coloured leathers, all fitted into the box shown. We bought these out to show Pam Johnson who was making her last visit to NZ. She has photographed a lot of his work but didn't have a picture of these. This lot are available for Chapters to borrow if they want to display them at an exhibition etc. We have them insured. John Sansom Morning tea The recent visit from Pamela Johnson (Arthur's widow) was indeed a pleasure. Pamela and Arthur have made many visits to New Zealand over the years and made many wonderful friends here through his amazing life time devoted to books. This was to be her last trip to NZ now that he is no longer with us, so I went along with a friend to the morning tea held for her at John Sansom's home. We were warmly welcomed with a delicious home made morning tea and coffee. Had a very relaxed chat with Pamela, who is a delightful, positive and interesting lady. She spoke of her love of New Zealand, especially Southland and Catlins area. She reminded me very much of my mother s cousin in UK. It is a pity that more people could not attend the morning to welcome her, but we had fun. Thank you to John and his wife Gwen for hosting her, I am sure she appreciated it. I bought one of the last copies of Arthurs book to bind, so now I have to get busy and bind it!! Gill Carlsson Christchurch Chapter Our monthly meetings continue to be well supported. We have been delighted to welcome some new members. In March we had a pleasantly messy morning making paste papers, with some stunning results - and a few not so stunning. It was great to see some of them at the April meeting made up as covering for books and boxes. At the April meeting we met the 'Saturday morning challenge' by making dos-a-dos books. These 'back to front' books are fun to make and many variations were suggested. Liz Davison In early March some of the Christchurch members decided to have a stall at the Swannanoa School Fair. This is an event that features large on the social calendars of Mid Canterbury, with about 200 stalls and 8000 people in attendance. We sallied forth and with great enthusiasm and expectations we set up our stall. In order to give a bit of colour to attract attention we included hand dyed silk and stained glass which was also made by our members. 8 ABC Newsletter 3 May - June ABC Newsletter 3 May - June 2009

6 It was a beautiful Canterbury day, calm and sunny with temperatures reaching 30. The 8,000 people promenaded through, licking ice creams and eating pies and carefully avoiding eye contact in case they were expected to stop and buy something. Our stall sold 3 pieces of stained glass and NO BOOKS! We decided not to be insulted as there was a general dearth of sales through out. Maybe this is a sign of the present financial climate bur possibly a stall at a fair is not the place for fine, hand made books where we faced the competition from cheap gimmicky imports. A frustrating day but we did gain some pleasure in sitting and chatting together. Our beautiful books, like homing pigeons, are now back home in our cupboards again. Terry Park Dunedin Chapter My favourite new book can be found at: There is a more formal bindery part to this website but the blog has amazing entries. Perhaps you could add to it? How about this book that seems to be reading you! Gojowczyk is a an artist who often uses books as his main material. Or Finland artist Janna Syvanoja. I remember her earlier art was paper twisted to look like sea shells, now she uses book leaves to create pendants and other wearable art. Janna says, The process of making my recycled paper jewellery pieces, involves a slow, natural technique. By curving each slice of paper around the steel wire, one by one, one after another, it is as if the piece grows into its shape by itself. I am delighted by the jewellery and objects from artist Betty Pepper, who says, Originally inspired by a poem this collection looks at what we choose to hide about ourselves and what we reveal to others, a secretive library where things are not always what they seem. Didn't we all want a book with a hidden compartment as a child? Scroll through the extensive index to find what appeals to you!
