8 Acknowledgements I began reading Frances Burney in the early 1980s, and this literary life is the culmination of nearly twenty years acquaintance with her many-sided work. It is also in countless ways a collaboration with other eighteenth-century scholars who generously shared their energy and their knowledge. I can list only a few of them here; some others I have mentioned in the notes, and still others will find their influence throughout these pages. Thank you, all of you, my colleagues and students at Barnard College and Harvard University, and especially the Board of Tutors at History and Literature, who have led me over the years to books I would never otherwise have read and ideas I would never otherwise have discovered. With Mary Nash, Beth Kowaleski-Wallace, Ruth Perry, and Susan Staves, I read Camilla and The Woman-Hater, profiting enormously from our warm discussions. When I started working on this literary life, various editions of Burney s work were just about to appear, and their editors freely shared photocopies of their unpublished transcriptions and editorial commentary. Peter Sabor sent Burney s plays on disk; Lars Troide, general editor of the magnificent edition-in-progress of Burney s early diaries, allowed me to see Betty Rizzo s typescript of Volume Four; and Lorna Clark sent me a huge package containing her edition of Sarah Harriet Burney s letters. Sabor s and Clark s editions are now published, so that I have been able to go back and reread their work in its final form, but my book would have progressed much more slowly if they had not been willing to share it sooner. Other colleagues read the entire manuscript in various stages: Patricia Brückmann goaded me on, Betty Rizzo convinced me I was finished, and Peter Sabor read the final draft with superbly intelligent meticulousness. Their gusto kept me going, and their extensive knowledge saved me from many swamps. For help at critical moments along the way, I also wish to thank Doris Alexander, Barbara Darby, Melinda Gray, Anne Fernald, Antonia Forster, Robert Maccubbin, Mitzi Myers, and R.J. Stangherlin. Florian Stuber, even when ill, always inspired me onwards. In the early stages, Naoka Carey was alltoo-briefly my research assistant, and Sarah Pershouse was an heroic proofreader. With Joyce Antler and Kathleen Weiler I taught a course in life-writing at the Radcliffe Graduate Consortium in Women s Studies, and their work and our students work in multiple ways became viii
9 Acknowledgements ix enmeshed with my own. Balliol College awarded me a sabbatical visitorship, which gave me the opportunity to discuss this literary life with Roger Lonsdale, who was inveterately amused that the person I called Burney was not the person he called Burney. Mary Nash at innumerable lunches discussed Burney s relationship with Hester Lynch Thrale Piozzi, sharing all her research and reveling in our disagreements. I must thank the staffs of the libraries where I have worked for their speed in retrieving boxes of manuscripts and books, and their cheerful patience: the Berg Collection of English and American Literature, the New York Public Library, the Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations; the Bibliothèque Nationale; the Bodleian; the British Library Manuscript Room, the Houghton Library at Harvard University, the Huntington Library, the Morgan Library, and the Beinecke Library Osborn Collection at Yale University. Richard Dutton, General Editor for Literary Lives, tactfully overlooked my many broken deadlines, kept me from including a multitude of extra facts, and when at last I sent the manuscript read it with speed and precision. Charmian Hearne, the publisher, has always cheerfully helped with the multitudinous details. I owe much to my family: Eva Thaddeus for reading pieces of the manuscript and bringing to my attention certain important passages in The Wanderer; Michael Thaddeus for buying me copies of books about Burney whenever he saw them, and for his constant detailed questioning; and Patrick Thaddeus who like M. d Arblay is passionately fond of literature, for living through it all with me and dragging me often to the tennis court. Most of all I must thank Jan Fergus, to whom I have dedicated this book. She set me to it, kept me at it, and read more versions than I can count. She has been, as Burney said of her sister Susanna, soul of my soul.
