1 Submitting your Economics Senior Research to Special Collections INTRODUCTION The manuscript copy that you donate to Special Collections and University Archives becomes a permanent part of your academic record and is a reflection of the scholarship and the research encouraged by the Economics Department. This record will be shared with students and faculty at UNC Asheville and with scholars and the public worldwide. Dr. Chris Bell, Economics Department (KAR157, bell@unca.edu), coordinates the submission process for the Economics Department. Contact him with any questions about the process or manuscript preparation. SENIOR PAPER SUBMISSION Two unbound paper copies of your manuscript are required for submission to Special Collections. This will be your final paper complete with signatures of your Econ 480 instructor, your departmental mentor, your second reader and the Chair of the Economics Department. One copy will be bound in a volume with other economics senior papers for the calendar year of your graduation. It will become a permanent part of the University collection. Detailed guidelines for paper format follow. ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION The Economics Department requires that a copy also be submitted in electronic form. Electronic copies MUST be in ADDITION to the paper copy of the Senior Paper. All electronic copies must be submitted to Dr. Bell in Microsoft Word. The digital copy must be an EXACT duplicate of the paper manuscript. We ask that students provide an electronic abstract of their work for publication on the Special Collections website. PUBLISHING YOUR WORK ELSEWHERE You may wish to withhold your manuscript from submission in order to honor publication in another source. If you plan to publish your work somewhere else, we will arrange for Special Collections and University Archives to withhold your manuscript for a period of up to six months from the date of submission of your request. This means that your manuscript will be neither cataloged for the D.H. Ramsey Library collections, nor will it be made available to users until after that time. This arrangement MUST be clearly spelled out in the required Release Form. See Dr. Bell for more details and help with this process.
2 RESPONSIBILITIES OF SPECIAL COLLECTIONS AND UNIVERSITY ARCHIVES Your Department will deliver your approved manuscripts to Special Collections and University Archives. When the manuscripts arrive, the Archive staff will review your manuscripts to determine if: all forms are present and signed (approval form, release form, departmental signatures). the paper meets minimum requirements for quality. the formatting of margins, pagination, and other requirements have been followed. all required pages are present. If there are changes to be made as a result of the University Archives review, you will be notified by Dr. Bell, and you must take responsibility for correction before the Archives will accept your manuscript. When all checklists are complete, the University Archives will send your manuscript for binding with the other departmental papers. Your work, when returned to University Archives from the bindery, will be available for access and possible circulation (inter-library loan). Your electronic abstract will be published for a broad audience on the Web. Requests for copies made by the author will be honored should that need arise.
3 DETAILED GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF YOUR MANUSCRIPT Introduction The manuscript must be neat, clean, legible and error-free. Use of a spell-checker is recommended, but the human eye is the best proofreader. The print should be dark, black characters that are consistently clear and dense and be considered of "letter quality." Pages with dirt, smudges, and stains will require replacement. There should be no visible corrections, strike-overs, crossed-out words or letters, interlineations, or additions inside or outside of the margins. Use of "Liquid Paper," other correction fluids, and type-over correction tape is not allowed. Any errors you may discover after the Special Collections and University Archives accepts the manuscript cannot be corrected. Citation Style: MLA, Chicago or APA may be used by Economics Students. Be sure you are using your style consistently. Consult a style sheet. Do not rely on a word processing program. Manuscript paper quality, thickness, size, etc.: 100% rag paper (acid-free) is preferred, but not mandatory. Use 20- to 24-pound, white, bond finish, 100% cotton paper for original and the copy. (No perforations or staples, please.) Typeface [fonts]: Use Times New Roman, 12 pt for body of the text. Spacing: Double space. Indent paragraphs. Do not add a space between paragraphs. Margins : Should be 1.5" from left edge of the page and 1" from the top, right, and bottom edges of the page. Check your margins with a ruler to be sure they are correct as printers can shift margins. Adjust your tables, figures, graphs, photographs and your appendices to fit the manuscript margins. Reduce or enlarge as necessary. Avoid the following if possible: hyphenating at the end of a line first line of a paragraph as the end line on a page last line of a paragraph as the first line at the top of a page fragmenting formulas, fragmenting items in a list, fragmenting grouped works Be sure to include page numbers.
