1 Justin Bye SLIB 510 PW Cohort Fall Semester Collection Analysis Report Dear Mr. Principal, Based on the SOL data collected from the U.S. History 1865 to the Present test seventh grade students at Beville Middle School show a weakness in objective USII.9c (identifying representative citizens who have influenced America scientifically, culturally, academically, and economically). Overall, the seventh grade reported a 69.3% pass rate in this category on the SOL Test. It is an area that seventh grade social studies teachers tell me their students struggle with. They have asked for materials that they can use in their classrooms to enhance the lessons they teach about these famous Americans: Henry Louis Gates Jr., Martha Graham, Bill Gates, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Drew, and Maya Angelou. To help the seventh grade social studies department with this need I analyzed the age of our collection, its quality, accuracy, condition, diversity, and appropriateness for our students. My findings were as follows: Henry Louis Gates Jr. We have one source, he is mentioned in the Grolier library of North American biographies published in Martha Graham We have one source, she is mentioned in the Grolier library of North American biographies published in Bill Gates 2 books, one published in 1999 (9 th grade reading level) interest level 5-8, condition is good, the cover lacks appeal and the book is written like a textbook. The other book is from 2000 (6 th grade reading level) interest level 5-8, the condition is good, but as with our other book the information is textbook like and outdated. Computers and Microsoft have come a long way since the turn of the 21 st century! Frank Lloyd Wright 2 books, one published in 1992 (8 th grade reading level) interest level 5-8, the condition is good, however, the reading level is too high for most of our students, and the text and pictures are not appealing. The other Wright book is from 1994 (7 th grade reading level) interest level 5-8, and is in good condition. This book has an attractive cover, is well written with kid friendly text, and full of great pictures. Charles Drew 2 books, one published in 1990 (7 th grade reading level) interest level 5-8, the condition is poor, and the cover contains many scuffs and tears. The information contained in this book is old and the pictures are not appealing. The other book on Drew is from 2002 (5 th grade reading level) interest level 3-6. The condition of this book is good, however it has a very bland appearance. The cover is generic and so is the text.
2 Maya Angelou VHS from 1996, sound recording of her poems from 1996, and her novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings from 2002, in poor condition with yellowing pages. Based on the test data and collection analysis performed it is clear that our library needs to get updated resources for students interested in these people, and materials that seventh grade teachers can use in their lessons for objective USII.9c. Because the library has very limited materials available for Martha Graham I have selected two resources. The first resource is a DVD video, Martha Graham: Dance on Film. This video includes clips that the social studies teachers can supplement into their lesson when teaching about Martha. I have also chosen Acts of Light: Martha Graham in the Twentyfirst century. A book of images that detail the many choreographed dances of Martha Graham. For Henry Louis Gates Jr. I also chose two resources because of the limited materials on hand in our library. The first resource I have chosen is a DVD video titled Finding Your Roots. This 10-part series sends Henry Louis Gates Jr. diving into the genealogy and genetics of famous Americans combining history and science in an exploration of race, family, and identity in America today. Professor Gates reveals the family trees of notable celebrities including Kevin Bacon, Robert Downey Jr., John Legend, Martha Stewart, Barbara Walters and many others. The second resource I chose for Henry Louis Gates was more difficult. I could only find one biography about Henry Louis Gates from 2008, and it did not look appealing. However, he has written the forward to many books, including a new and exciting graphic novel titled Strange Fruit, Volume I: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History by Joel Christian Gill. I think this book would be a big hit with the demographic at Beville, and would also be useful for teaching Segregation and Civil Rights, both of which are taught in the seventh grade social studies curriculum. For Bill Gates I have selected a newer e-book from a popular series titled Who is Bill Gates published in This resource is much more current, and will provide students with more pertinent information than the materials currently available in the library. For Frank Lloyd Wright I chose another e-book titled Frank Lloyd Wright for Kids: His Life and Ideas. The reading level seems more appropriate for our students than the resources we currently have. The second resource for Frank Lloyd that I chose is DVD video, done by the famous historian Ken Burns. This is another excellent resource that seventh grade teachers can use to show clips from while instructing their students about the famous architect. For Charles Drew I selected a picture book that can be read in the classroom titled Charles Drew: Doctor Who Got the World Pumped Up to Donate Blood. This is not only a great book that can be checked out by students, but also an excellent read aloud picture book for the classroom. Keeping with that idea, for Maya Angelou I selected the picture book Poetry for Young People: Maya Angelou. This book contains rich illustrations and 25 poems by Maya Angelou that will be a great resource for teachers in the classroom, or students who want to explore her work on their own. I also have selected another excellent picture book titled Life Doesn t Frighten Me by Maya Angelou. Another picture book containing a famous poem by Maya Angelou that can read aloud by the teacher and enjoyed by the students.
