Biographical note Cleora Clark Wheeler was born in Austin, Minnesota in She studied design and drafting at the University of Minnesota, and, following graduation, took classes at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (now, Parsons The New School for Design). Wheeler returned to Minnesota and established her own studio in the family residence in St. Paul. Referring to herself as a "designer-illuminator," Wheeler designed custom bookplates, greeting cards, and wedding invitations. Source: McEachern, Margaret A work of art for the front of each book. Christian Science Monitor, July 17. Scope and Contents note The collection consists of notebooks Cleora Clark Wheeler kept for recording lectures and of bookplates and greeting cards she designed. Wheeler began recording lectures by Frank Alvah Parsons on art history and interior decoration in October According to documentation provided with the donation, New York School of Fine and Applied Art students and the general public attended the lectures. Because of Parsons' popularity as a speaker, the lectures were held in an assembly hall provided by a "trust company" to accomodate the large audience. The bookplates are annotated by Wheeler with date and subject matter depicted. The collection also includes two greeting cards and a small pamphlet advertising her studio.
