1 Spring 2008 Newsletter FRIENDS of the LANE MEMORIAL LIBRARY.. President s Note HELLO FRIENDS! HAPPY Spring! It s finally here. As we begin this new season, the Friends of the Library are also enjoying new life. We have doubled our membership as a result of our bulk mailing. Welcome to all of you and I hope to greet you at an event or at our next general meeting. Thanks so much for joining. Your membership helps in many ways: Through your special library friendship you are helping to promote this wonderful resource to the rest of the community to enjoy and help support. Also, donations, large or small, go a long way, such as toward the Friends recent donation to replace the broken LCD projector in the Lane Conference and Meeting Room. The new, more efficient and higher-quality projector can be used for both presentations from a laptop computer as well as for large-screen movies. 21 and Thurs., May 22. As part of this book sale, we ll hold raffle a gift basket from Hollywood Video, which will include two movies, popcorn, candy and juice. Raffle tickets will be 1 for $1 or 6 for $5. This has been an exciting year for me as President. Working with and meeting people has been very rewarding. I truly hope you have the same experience. 2 RUTH S TIMSON Hampton Artist, Renaissance Woman Ruth Stimson is fondly remembered by many in Hampton as a true Renaissance Woman. Ruth was a talented artist, passionate environmentalist, educator, community leader, library supporter and expert gardener. SPRING TRIMMING Ruth As a Hampton resident, she served in several capacities for the Stimson prunes a Japanese Quince Lane Memorial Library. She was a member of several on the grounds of the Lane Memorial organizations including the Hampton Library. The leaves need removing Garden Club and Historical Society. and the bushes need pruning, said the longtime member of the club. It is very fitting that several fine reproductions of her art serve as a fundraiser for the Friends of Lane Memorial Library. They can be purchased at the library and at the Tuck Museum in Hampton for $10 per set of 5 note cards. There are two beautiful sets of cards with different themes. (Below is one set.) Great Mother s Day gifts to show appreciation for the moms you know. Available at the circulatio n desk and Tuck Museum. -2-

3 Children s Book Sale May Drop on in! Lane s semiannual Children s Book Sale is May p.m. and May 22 9a.m. - 5p.m. We also need volunteers to staff the book sale and to help organize the books before and after the sale times. In conjunction with Paulina and Joanne in the Children s Room, the Friends of Lane will sponsor a field trip for the Centre School first graders on the morning of May 21. Each student receives a quarter by the school to buy one book. The students also get story time with Paulina, and a Children s Room tour from Joanne, along with a library card application. Our hope is to get more children to come to the library and enjoy the many benefits our fabulous library has to offer. If you have any questions or can volunteer your time, please contact me. Sue Hughes suemarkh@comcast.net, Thanks for Your Support on Article 21 I would like to thank the Friends for their tremendous efforts in support of Article 21, for the library s HVAC system. The vote seems to be more indicative of the current climate in the town, than a lack of support for the library. The Trustees will be discussing how to proceed without the funds to fix the HVAC system. It is very encouraging that we have continued support from the Friends, for this and other projects. I cannot thank you enough for all that you have done and continue to do, on behalf of the library. Bridgit Valgenti -3-

4 Lane Library Gardens Clean Up The Hampton Garden Club will be having a Spruce Up and Clean Up meeting for the Lane Library on May 14 (rain date: May 15) at 6 p.m. Refreshments afterward at the First Congregational Church, Winnacunnet Road, Hampton. We welcome and need ANY men and women who can please come and help, and would also welcome them into the Garden Club if they would like to become members. Thanks so much in advance. Please congratulate Kris Sawyer, former President of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library, who was recently sworn in as an Alternate Trustee of the Lane Memorial Library. We look forward to her tenure on the board and appreciate her involvement with and dedication to the library. -4-

5 Explore the Currier Museum! The Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, N.H., is open again after almost two years of being closed for expansion and renovations. It now features an expanded gallery space, visitor lockers, a Winter Garden café, and a 180-seat auditorium. Through the Friends of Lane, the library offers a pass that allows four adults in free, while children 18 and under are always admitted free. Obtain the pass up to one week in advance of visit either by phone or in person at the Main Desk. Thanks to purchases by the Friends of Lane, the library can offer this as well as other free and discount admission passes available to area museums, including the New England Aquarium, Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Science in Boston, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass., the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, and the New Hampshire Historical Society. For more information, or to schedule a pass, call Twilight Book Club Consider yourself invited! The Twilight Book Club meets the first Tuesday of each month from 6:30 8 p.m. in the Dorothy Little Room at Lane Library. All are welcome. Bring a drink for yourself and a snack to share if you like. For May 6 we will discuss The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, which has Death himself as the narrator of this amazing tale. Our June 3 selection is The Mercy of Thin Air, by Ronlyn Domingue. Fun stuff: Bring a book recommendation for our July 1 selection, which we ll vote on. Also, we'll have a quickie book swap at the end of each meeting, so bring one book that you can swap for another.
