1 friends of the REDWOOD LIBRARIES FROM THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR: Nick Wilczek HAPPY NEW YEAR from the Humboldt County Library! With the holiday season behind us, Humboldt County Library is heading towards spring with a lot of exciting things afoot. Our biggest news is that the Library has recently started a county-wide fine forgiveness program aimed at welcoming children and their families back to the library. This program, made possible through an ACE s (Adverse Childhood Experiences) grant, makes it possible for the library to waive fines and offer free replacement library cards for children eight and under, as well as other children in their households. It makes us very happy to remove financial barriers to the library access that some of our community members might be experiencing. There are also plenty of new programs in the works. One such program is Eureka s new film series Dumb Movies with Smart People. The series involves screening a bad movie (think Twister, Anaconda, and San Andreas), followed by a talk and Q & A session with an expert on the topic. A herpetologist, for example, will be here to discuss everything wrong with Anaconda (starring J. Lo, Jon Voight, and Ice Cube). Also be on the lookout for our new adult book group. The group, Books on Tap, will meet every month at the Board Room, located at Redwood Acres. Come out and join us for books, friends, charcuterie, cider, and wine. Be sure to check out the meeting room and the garage on Friday, February1st, or Saturday, February 2nd. If you come on Friday, remember that you need to be a member. You can become an FRL member or renew your membership for a very nominal fee. Children s Art Calendars are still available in the Eureka Main Library. They re at the circulation desk and also upstairs in the Serendipity Book Store. You ll find photos of many of the young artists on pages 2 and 5 of this issue. The Calendar Committee is already planning for the 2020 calendar, so watch for announcements this spring.. Do you still have a VCR? Technology is changing so rapidly that many of us no longer have tape players and these movies are being discontinued by the library. If you come to the garage during the sale, you will find a table overflowing with VHS tapes and we are offering them to you free as many as you want!! What a deal! We ll look forward to seeing you on Friday or Saturday, February 1st or 2nd.

NEWS FROM THE McKINLEYVILLE LIBRARY Teri Huber-Bundros Sadly, the Friends of the McKinleyville Library has retired our monthly book sales. A big thank you to all of our loyal customers and generous book donors. We appreciate your continued and faithful support of our library. We are also grateful for the Pierson Company, who provided us a wonderful sale site for more than a decade. Thank you, everyone! We will miss you all. The remaining $5,949 paid for the annual subscription to the McNaughton Plan, which enables the Library to provide extra copies of best sellers without purchasing them during the period when they are popular and to return them when they are no longer needed. Gifts to the Library for the first half of the fiscal year totaled $15,616. Funds for these gifts came from sales from all sources; memberships beyond the basic level; and donations, including memorial donations. We are very grateful to everyone who supports the Friends and those activities that make our gifts possible. Karen Anderson, Treasurer TUESDAY NIGHT MOVIES Written and Directed by Preston Sturges Well, we re a little late, but we hope you were able to make it to some of the January films. Movies are shown quarterly on Tuesday nights. They are shown in the large meeting room of the Eureka Main Library, with discussion beginning at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome, and admission is FREE. Licensing for the films is paid by the Friends of the Redwood Libraries. Thanks to Michael Logan for taking responsibility for programming and showing these classic films and scheduling great speakers! January films: Jan. 8, The Miracle of Morgan s Creek; Jan. 15, The Palm Beach Story; and Jan. 23, The Great McGinty. You still have time to catch Hail the Conquering Hero, which will be hosted by Gabrielle Gopinath on January 29. Next film series will be in April. SALE February 2 and 3 Page 3

4 FRL VOLUNTEER LUNCHEON Marilyn Tucker The annual Volunteer Luncheon was held in December at the Red Lion Inn in Eureka. It gave us an opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal and to thank our members who give unselfishly of their time and energy to help keep the Friends activities that support the Humboldt County Library running smoothly. We also welcomed several members of the Library Staff. It was a pleasure to present Ronda Wittenberg with flowers to congratulate her for being awarded the 2018 Helen Everett Award by the Humboldt Library Foundation. Ronda is an amazing staff person who works tirelessly for the Library and our community. A special treat Charles Young with Limited Edition Marilyn and Ronda was the appearance of Charles Young and the wonderful singing group, Limited Edition, from Eureka High. NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS OF THE FORTUNA LIBRARY Amy Conley Fortuna prepares for their annual Library Day AND MORE! Members and volunteers of the Friends of the Fortuna Library are hard at work preparing for this year s Library Day, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Fortuna Veterans Hall. This annual used book sale fills the hall with books from many different genres, but all hardbacks are only one dollar and paperbacks are fifty cents. During the sale, young artists from the town s schools will display their art, with each artist receiving a coupon for a free book. The fundraiser chicken cacciatore and polenta dinner will again be created by Milton Conley. Cost is $25 per adult, $10 for children, with takeout and drive-thru meals available. The Library Day book sale and dinner are the main fundraisers for the Friends of the Fortuna Library for the year. Proceeds from the sale fund story time, family literacy nights, improved computer access, and the popular Lego afterschool program on Wednesdays. Members and library supporters will gather January 23 at the Fortuna River Lodge at 11 a.m. for the annual brunch to thank volunteers and celebrate the community partnerships that help the library flourish.
