1 Note to Authors and Readers Every author who submits an article or note to the Journal of Glass Studies must sign an agreement assigning copyright for this content to The Corning Museum of Glass. This agreement, which will take effect only when the submission is accepted for publication, protects the interests of the Museum and the author by specifying, for both parties, the rights related to the publication and reuse of the material. The agreement guarantees that the Museum has all necessary rights to reproduce and distribute the content throughout the world in any print or electronic medium. By signing the agreement, an author (or the author s employer) certifies the following: 1. The work is original and has not been previously published. 2. The work does not infringe on anyone s copyright or other rights. 3. All necessary permissions, licenses, or clearances have been obtained for any material copyrighted /owned by another party, including illustrations, and these materials are clearly identified and acknowledged in the text. 4. The author owns the copyright of the article or note and is authorized to transfer it. The author (or the author s employer) retains the following rights: 1. All proprietary rights other than copyright. 2. The right to make and distribute copies of the content for internal purposes. 3. The right to use the material for lecture or classroom purposes. 4. The right to make other publications based on the content, including books or book chapters, journal papers, and magazine articles, provided the new work appears after the publication of the volume of the Journal of Glass Studies in which the contribution appears. 5. The right to post an author-prepared or official version of the published work on a server controlled exclusively by the author / employer, under three stipulations: (1) The posting is noncommercial and is made available without charge. (2) A copyright notice and full citation appear with the post. (3) A link to the Corning Museum s official online version of the abstract is provided. Manuscripts accepted by the Journal of Glass Studies, and all illustrations accompanying those manuscripts that are not already copyrighted by a third party, are copyrighted by The Corning Museum of Glass, and the Museum reserves the right to reproduce such materials in their entirety or in part in any future publication (printed, photographic, or electronic) issued by the Museum. This includes the entire Journal in full-text online databases. 2 The Journal of Glass Studies was created in 1959 to serve as a vehicle for scholarship in the history, art, and early technology of glass. The editors of the Journal seek previously unpublished articles of orig inal re search on topics relat ed to the history of glass, from its beginnings to the mid-20th century, that would be of interest to an international audience of glass scholars. Articles should be sent to the Editor, who will submit them to Journal Advisers or Corning Museum of Glass staff readers for decision on acceptance for pub lication. The Journal does not accept articles con cerned with living artists or glassmakers. Manuscripts are reviewed and considered for publication in the order in which they are received. All articles must be received no later than September 15 of the year preceding publication. The Journal publishes articles in English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian. All articles must be accompanied by a 100- to 150-word ab stract in English. An honorarium of $500 will be paid for each article published in the Journal, and each author will receive one complimentary copy of the volume in which the ar ti cle appears and a CD-ROM containing a PDF file of the article. Authors are re sponsible for printing and distributing the article to their pho to sources. Manuscripts may be submitted by or on CD- ROM. An article that is approved by a read er may still be re jected if any of the illustrations are determined to be of unacceptable quality. The author will then be asked to supply images of ac ceptable quality or to eliminate any illustrations that do not meet the Journal s standard. High-resolution digital images must be no smaller than 4 x 5 inches, no less than 300 dpi, and saved in either TIF or JPEG format. Line drawings must be scanned at no less than 600 dpi. Digital images can be sent electronically by using one of the various file transfer services (for example, Dropbox or the Web site wetransfer.com) or mailed on a CD-ROM to the address listed above. Questions regarding images should be directed to Jaci Saunders at saundersjs@ cmog.org. The Journal does not reimburse authors for any costs associated with the production or ac quisition of images. Authors are also responsible for supplying and for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted materials. Information of less than article length that may be of interest to the scholarly world of glass will be considered for publication in the Notes section. Contrib utors of scholarly notes will re ceive a com pli mentary copy of the Journal in which the note appears and a CD-ROM containing a PDF file of the Notes section. A copy of the style rules for manuscripts sub mitted to the Journal will be sent to prospective contributors on request; manuscripts that do not follow this pattern will be returned to authors for correction before acceptance. The Journal staff normally restricts its editing to matters of clarity and correct usage once the article has been approved by the Readers or Ad visers. An edited typescript and a layout are sent to authors for approval.

3 Additional Notes for Contributors Spelling and Abbreviations Authorities for spelling are the following: Random House Webster s College Dictionary, New York: Random House Inc., Webster s New Geographical Dictionary. 3rd ed., Springfield, Mass.: Merriam-Webster Inc., Merriam-Webster s Biographical Dictionary. Springfield, Mass.: Merriam-Webster Inc., Foreign words use diacritical marks as an essential part of their spelling. Abbreviations should be avoided except in footnotes, lists, statistics, and tables. Numbers below 10 should be spelled out. A.D. precedes the date (e.g., A.D. 32); B.C. follows the date. Italics Italics are indicated by a single underlining of the following: Titles of books and periodicals. Foreign words not yet Anglicized, except quotations, titles of articles, and proper nouns. Quotations Quotations of fewer than 100 words should be run-on, within quotation marks. Quotations of 100 words or more should be separated from context to be set as a block quotation (i.e., in reduced type, slightly indented at left). If a block quotation is a single paragraph, do not indent the first line; if it is two or more paragraphs, indent the first line of each. Periods and commas are placed inside quotation marks. 1

4 Footnotes Make first reference to each source detailed; abbreviate later references as noted below. Footnotes should be numbered consecutively throughout each article. They should appear on a separate page, inserted at the end of the manuscript. Double-space within each note; triple-space between notes. Footnotes in the printed copy will appear at the bottom of each page. They shoud be used as sparingly as possible and only for brief information that cannot conveniently be fitted into the text. Footnote numbers should follow periods except in sentences for which there are several footnotes. For example:... the Rhineland, 1 Syria, 2 and Egypt. 3 The following forms of reference should be used: Books Author s name, with first name (not initial, unless the book was published that way) first, followed by a comma. Title of work or part of work cited, underlined to represent italics, followed by a comma. Series where necessary, followed by a comma. Edition where necessary, followed by a comma. Place of publication, followed by a colon. Name of publisher, followed by a comma. Date of publication, followed by a comma. Reference to volume in Arabic numerals, preceded by v., followed by a comma. Page number(s), preceded by p. (pp.), followed by a period. For example: Periodicals M. H. Swinnerton, Ancient Excavations, New York: McGraw-Hill, 1929, p. 72. Author s name, first name first, followed by a comma. Title of article, followed by a comma and enclosed in quotation marks. Full name of periodical, underlined to indicate italics, followed by a comma. Series where necessary, followed by a comma. Volume number in Arabic numerals, preceded by v., followed by a comma. Issue number in Arabic numerals, preceded by no., followed by a comma. Year, preceded by month or season (e.g., November 1971 or Spring 1968 ), followed by a comma. Page number(s), preceded by p. The word note and the number of the note containing the first reference, both in brackets. The page, plate, and/or figure reference for the current citation. Bergman [note 1], p When the first reference is part of a note containing more than one work by the same author, the subsequent reference must include the name of the work (in full or in part, depending on length), followed by the word note and the number of the previous note in brackets. Foreign Languages Footnotes, including the apparatus of scholarship (volume, page, etc.), in a foreign-language paper are to be written in that language. If an English-language reference is cited in the footnote of a German-language article, for example, the volume and page numbers of that citation would be preceded by Bd, and S., respectively. The place of publication should appear in the language of the source, however. Captions for Illustrations Captions should be as brief as possible. Please include accession numbers for all glass objects illustrated. Each caption should be typed flush left, preceded by FIG. and the caption number (in Arabic numerals). The caption text should be underlined. For example: 3

Numerals Use Arabic numerals for tables, text illustrations, chapters, plates, charts, and inserted maps or graphs. 4
