1 Guidelines for Contributors to Critical Horizons Please follow these guidelines when you first submit your article for consideration by the journal Editors. If accepted, we will send you more detailed instructions for preparation of your final manuscript Neither the editor nor the editorial board accept responsibility for the views or statements expressed by the authors. Peer Review All articles are peer-reviewed. Our review process takes approximately 12 weeks. Incoming papers are normally reviewed by at least two referees (in addition to the editor), unless they are clearly not appropriate for the aims and scope of the journal. Refereeing is anonymous unless a referee chooses otherwise. Papers are reviewed blind and it is the author s responsibility to disguise authorship by appropriate means. The online system provides assistance in this regard. When preparing your article for submission please take the following steps: 1. Remove your name entirely from the text. If you cite your own publications be sure to substitute the word author for your own personal details and for the actual title of the work cited. 2. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file (see under File in Word), by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Microsoft application: File>Save As>Tools (or Options with a Mac)>Security>Remove personal information from the file properties on save>save. 3. On any PDF uploaded, remove the author names from Document Properties found under File on Adobe. Please note that the online system collects your personal data at stage one of the submission process and holds it separately from your actual article. Copies of referees reports will normally be sent to contributors to enable them to see reasons for acceptance or rejection, or suggestions for improvement. Correspondence regarding decisions reached by the editorial committee is not encouraged. Language of Publication The language of publication is English. The language of submission should be English unless alternatives are agreed with the Editor. Permissions The journal normally accepts only original, previously unpublished articles. You will need to clear copyright for any copyrighted material that you use or

2 quote, including artwork. Please refer to separate PDF (Permission Guidelines for Authors). If you have any questions about this, please contact the Editor. Contributor Agreement/Contributor Copies Once your article has been accepted, please return to the website to print out, sign and post to Equinox a copy of the Contributor Agreement for copyright assignment. Your acceptance of our terms for publication is implied by your submission of the final version of your paper for publication. These terms may be viewed on the journal s website in detail. Contributors (full articles or review essays) will be sent a final (published version) PDF of their article and a copy of the issue in which it appeared. Contributors may buy additional hard copies at a discount. Online vs. Paper Submissions We normally accept only online submissions. If you are unable to submit through the online system, contact the Editor for assistance. Online submission is a five-stage process and you may submit articles or book reviews but in the case of book reviews, please check in advance with the Book Review Editor to ensure that the book you want to review has not already been assigned. Once you have begun the five-stage process, you will be prompted to supply various types of information (metadata) along with your actual article including a 150 word abstract and three five keywords, a short biographical statement, contact details and appropriate library of congress subject classification codes, among other things. This metadata is important because it facilitates the indexing of your article once it is published, leading to more citations and greater readership. PDFs are not acceptable for submission of articles; you can upload a PDF through the system as a Supplementary File following submission of the Word File if you wish to bring to the attention of the Editor any particular features which will be required at the layout stage or to clarify font usage. There is a separate step in the process for this, or to upload any other supplementary material such as (a) research instruments (b) data sets (c) sources that would otherwise be unavailable to readers or (d) figures or tables (e) audio/video material. If you intend these to become an official part of the online journal, please indicate in a note to the Editor. Your submission should be in Microsoft Word and double-spaced throughout with page numbers. All accepted contributions will be copy-edited to the journal style and queries will be supplied to the author with first proofs.

3 Articles The Editor will not consider manuscripts that are under consideration by other publishers. It is assumed that once submitted to Critical Horizons, articles will not be sent to other publishers until a decision about inclusion has been reached. Articles should be 7,000 to 8,000 words in length. Book Reviews Book reviews do not require abstracts but do require keywords and other metadata. Book reviews are normally 1000 to 1,500 words in length. Book reviews should be headed with the following information in this order: name of author, year of publication, title and subtitle of the book, town, where relevant state, and name of publisher, number of pages, whether hardback or paperback, ISBN, and price. Each review should conclude with the reviewer s name, institutional affiliation, and country. Always check with the Book Review Editor before submitting a review in case your chosen book has already been assigned. Review Articles will also be considered. Proofs Authors of accepted articles will be sent a PDF of the first proof and will normally be expected to a list of corrections within two weeks of receipt. Corrections should be confined to typographical errors or to specific questions raised by the editors. 1. Spelling 1.1 Spelling should conform to UK English. Please ensure that notes are in UK English too. 1.2 Use z not s in words where this is optional (and note UK spelling analyse ). 1.3 Note: judgement (not judgment); programme (program only for computer programs); Marxist/ism (not marxist/ism); labour (not labor), colour (not color), vis-á-vis (not viz-á-viz). 1.4 Spell out centuries: twentieth century (not 20th century). 1.5 For possessives with names ending in s, use s (e.g. Descartes s) unless the name ends with the sound eez (e.g. Socrates ). 1.6 Spell out numbers in full (e.g. ninety-nine years) and use numerals for numbers 101 and above.

4 1.7 Spell out the names of countries or states in full. Use UK spellings (Florence, not Firenze). 1.8 In text spell out the abbreviations i.e. (that is), e.g. (for example) and etc. (and so on); use the abbreviations in parenthetical remarks. 2. Quotations 2.1 Use double quotation marks, single quotation marks only within doubles. 2.2 Display as a new indented paragraph all quotes of more than 40 words. Do not use quotation marks around indented quotes. 2.3 The closing quote should precede all punctuation except for question marks or exclamation marks that are part of the quote 3. Referencing 3.1 No in-text referencing should be used. Use footnotes (not endnotes). 3.2 Place endnote numbers after punctuation. Do not insert a space between the punctuation and the note number. Where possible place endnotes at the end of a sentence, not in the middle. 3.3 Give references in full at the first mention in the notes, using the following as a guide to style: A. J. Reiss (ed.), Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. 3.6 Book titles and journal names should be in italics, with significant words capitalized. Spell out journal names in full. 3.7 Enclose the titles of journal articles and chapter titles in double quotation marks. 3.8 Include the names of translators and editors, indicated (trans.) and (ed.) or (eds) (see 4.3).

5 3.9 Elide page number ranges following this example: 90 91, 97 8, 102, , , Style 4.1 Italicize all non-english words (except for proper nouns). 4.2 Ensure gender neutrality. 4.3 Use italics rather than underline for emphasis. 4.4 Spell out in full it s, don t, can t and so on. 4.5 Do not punctuate abbreviations and acronyms that are collections of capital letters: ACT, RSPCA, AIDS, NATO. 4.6 Punctuate abbreviations but not contractions: Dr, St, Dept, but Prof., vol., ch. 7. Presentation 7.1 Double space all manuscripts. 7.2 Use a single space between the full stop at the end of a sentence and the beginning of a new sentence. 7.3 Separate paragraphs with a double line. 7.4 Number the pages, and place page numbers at the bottom right-hand corner. 7.5 Indicate headings by making them bold, up a point size and left justified. 8. Miscellaneous 8.1 Space ellipses, that is, insert a space before and after an ellipsis ( ). There is no need to put square brackets around an ellipsis. 8.2 Use a spaced en dash ( ) to indicate a break or interruption that disrupts the sentence.
