1 April and May 2015 Classes, Events, and News Friends of the Library Spring Book Sales in April Library Community Courses The Christian County Friends of the Library will host their spring book sale in April in the Netzer Room at the Christian County Library. Most items are priced $0.50 to $1.00. Cash and checks are accepted. Items for sale include books of all kinds, videos and DVDs, puzzles, magazines, and more. Friends of the Library members are invited to a preview sale on Friday, April 10th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Get an annual membership at the door, or in the library anytime, for $6.00 per adult or $10 per family. The public sale is open during the following times: Saturday, April 11th, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday, April 13th-16th, 12:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Friday, April 17th, 12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. (Items Half Price) Saturday, April 18th, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (Items $2 Per Plastic Grocery Bag) The Clever Public Library Friends of the Library also host their sale in April. The Clever Book Sale takes place at the Clever Fire Station Community Room, located at 406 N. Elm St. in Clever. Sale dates and times are as follows: Friday, April 24th, 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Saturday, April 25th, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Every book sale purchase supports these Friends of the Library organizations, which in turn fund important projects at the libraries. You can also help by donating used books, movies, music and more to your library. Donations of materials for the sales are accepted anytime the libraries are open. The Christian County Library will accept donations up to April 4th, 2014, and again after May 9th due to meeting room and storage area renovations. 2 Library Community Courses Library Community Courses provide lifelong learning opportunities for the citizens of Christian County. Classes are free and taught by library instructors. Call (417) to register. Introduction to Computers Series Introduction to Computers Part IV: Shortcuts Saturday, April 4, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Finishing out the series begun in March, this session teaches students to use copy and paste to save information on the internet to their or other places on the hard drive. Learn how to keep files organized neatly so information is easily located on the computer. Learn to create new folders and rename old ones. Learn how to search and find files that you have saved on your computer. Learn what keyboard shortcuts are and how to use them. Registration required. Call (417) Microsoft Office Series Recommended for those with basic computer skills or who have completed the Introduction to Computers series. Microsoft Word Basics Monday, May 18, 5:30-6:30 p.m. Learn the basic word processing tasks in Microsoft Word 2007, 2010, and 2013, including creating, printing, and saving documents, formatting text, plus an overview of some of the more advanced features available in the program. Registration required. Call (417) Microsoft Excel Basics Saturday, May 30, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Does adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing long lists of numbers sound terrifying? Relax and let Excel do the work for you. Crunch those numbers, add charts and graphs, calculate your monthly budget, or keep a tidy address book. Learn the basics of using the Excel spreadsheet program. Registration required. Call (417) Genealogy Start Your Family Tree Saturday, May 23, 10:00-11:00 a.m. Begin at the beginning. This Library Community Course covers the basics of tracing your family history. It's for anyone who would like to start working on their genealogy, and those who would like to get the work that they have already done organized in order to continue their research. Registration required. Call (417) Need extra help? Want to learn about a technology topic not covered in our classes? Book a Trainer! Visit or call (417) to request a free, one-on-one session with a library technology trainer. 2

3 Library Events for Adults Crafty in Christian County: Easy Weave Afghans No knitting, crocheting, or looms. Learn to create an afghan with an easy weaving technique. Bring two skeins of yarn in two colors. Registration opens April 25. Saturday, May 16, 9:00 a.m.-12:00p.m. Crafty in Christian County: Book Wreaths Create a beautiful wreath from the pages of an old book. Books and supplies provided. Bring ornaments, silk flowers, or trinkets to decorate the center of your wreath. Registration opens May 9. Saturday, May 30, 2:00 p.m. Clever Public Library Events and News Legos at the Library Join us for a special hour of Lego Play the third Friday of each month at the Clever Public Library. Sponsored by the Clever Friends of the Library. Friday, April 17, 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2:00 p.m. Clever Public Library Storytime Come each Saturday for storytime at the Clever Public Library. No registration required. Saturdays, April 4-May 30, 10:00 a.m. Clever Friends of the Library will host their spring book sale in April. Check the front page of this newsletter for details! 3

4 Preschool Storytime Ages 3-6 Join us for stories, songs, and crafts to help develop pre-reading skills. Geared toward 3-6 year olds. No registration required. Children s Area: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, April 7 May 6, 10:30 a.m. Programs for Children Storytimes Lap Time at the Library Ages 0-2 This story time is just for babies and toddlers, birth to two years old. Bring your little one for stories, songs, rhymes, and playtime just right for the youngest children. No registration required. Children s Area: Thursdays, April 2 May 28, 11:00 a.m. Netzer Room: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, May 12 May 27, 10:30 a.m. Preschool Easter Party Ages 0-6 Hunt for eggs, and share stories, games and treats. Please bring 6 plastic candy filled eggs and something to hold your found eggs while we search. Registration opens March 3. Tuesday and Wednesday, March 31 and April 1, 10:30 a.m. Gardening Make and Take How does your garden grow? Cut, paste,and color your real or imaginary garden, and take it home to grace your wall, fridge, or bulletin board. No registration required. Saturday, April 11, All Day April and May Events Make a Mother s Day Card Show your love for mom (or grandma, or auntie) with something handmade. Stop by the library and make your own card. No registration required. Saturday, May 2, All Day Get Wimpy! Do you love to read about Greg and his friends? Here s your chance to hang out with other kids who love Diary of a Wimpy Kid too. Play games and answer trivia questions to earn mom bucks. Earn the most mom bucks and get a prize. Registration opens May 9. Saturday, May 30, 2:30 p.m. 4

5 Programs for Teens Teen Book Club Join our teen book club, meeting every first Friday. Find out what we re reading this month at No registration required. Friday, April 3, 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 1, 3:30 p.m. Geeks United Enjoy anime, graphic novels, fantasy, sci-fi and all things geeky? Join Geeks United! Meet fellow geeks and share your interests with a new theme each month. Registration opens three weeks in advance. Quidditch: Saturday, May 16, 2:00 p.m. Fanfiction Contest Get your computers or pens ready for the Teen Fanfiction Contest! Pick a fandom (or fandoms for crossovers) and start writing your own short fanfiction. Entries should be no more than six pages. Include a cover page with your name and the title of your fic. Make sure that your story is original, and turn in your entry to the Christian County Library by April 20th, Winners will be announced April 27th, and will receive a special quill. April Events Teen Cupcake Wars Bring your A game for Teen Cupcake Wars! Teams will create a cupcake based on their favorite book or series. The team with the most creative/tastiest cupcake will win! Registration opens March 12. Thursday, April 2, 4:00 Star Wars: Revenge of the Fifth Stop by Collectomaniacs (1459 West South Street, Ozark, MO 65721) on Revenge of the Fifth (May 5th) to celebrate Star Wars! We will have a table with a make and take Star Wars themed craft. Afterwards, take a look around at all the amazing things at Collectomaniacs!. No registration required.
