3 Creating an APA Template in WORD 1. Open a blank Word document 2. Go to tab: REFERENCES 3. Go to: Add text: a. Select: Level 1 4. Go to tab: INSERT a. Page Number b. Top of Page c. Plain Number 3 5. While still in the Page Number mode: a. Type: Running head: (SHORT) TITLE OF OUR PAPER b. Use spaces to position the Header to the far left edge of the page (escape key) 6. THE COVER PAGE a. Title should be centered on the page b. Font: 2 point TIMES ROMAN c. NOT Bolded, Underlined or Italicized Save the template as: APA Template for future papers

4 Removing words Running head: from subsequent pages Microsoft Word 2007 and On the View tab: Select Print Layout 2. Double Click the header area of the document. A new tab will appear: DESIGN Check the box Different First Page 3. First Page Header should be: Running head: TITLE OF THE PAPER 4. Go to second page: Delete phrase Running head: o Press escape key to exit header area Save the template as: APA Template for future papers

5 Inserting Parenthetical Phrases 1. Position cursor at point to insert the reference. 2. Go to tab: REFERENCES 3. Click: Insert Citation and fill in all the information for the reference. 4. Click box: Show All Bibliography Fields Example: Type of Source: Journal Article Author: Flegel, O.J. Journal Name: Journal of the American Medical Association Year: Pages: 4

6 Creating an APA Paper using a MAC (Microsoft Office for MAC 2008) 1. Open a blank document 2. Go to tab: INSERT 3. Go to: PAGE NUMBERS (a box will open) a. SET POSITION: TOP OF PAGE HEADER b. SET ALIGNMENT: RIGHT c. CLICK: OK 4. See Page Number 1 at top right of page. a. Double Click at Top of Page (Header space will open) b. Click: Different First Page (Notice: the number 1 will disappear) c. Type: Running head: TITLE OF OUR PAPER (short) d. Tab over and retype the number 1 and position it at the 1 inch margin on right. e. Click: Close (see close just below the blue line) 5. To get to second page: a. Go to: INSERT > Break > Page Break o The second page will appear with the number 2 in the right corner. 6. Creating different header for subsequent pages: a. Double Click at top of page. (Header space will open) b. Do not type Running head. ONLY TYPE: TITLE OF PAPER c. Click: Close (see close just below the blue line) Reference: Video: APA Style Paper for Mac

8 Glossary What is a Bibliography? Also called a Reference List, a bibliography is a list of the sources you used when writing a scholarly article or paper or a list of books or articles an author has published on a specific subject. What is an Empirical study? Empirical studies are reports of original research that include analysis of data not presented on the original research. Sections may include and introduction; a method; results and a discussion/conclusion that is distinct of the original work. What is a Literature Review? A literature review surveys scholarly articles, books and other sources (e.g. dissertations, conference proceedings) relevant to a particular issue, area of research, or theory, providing a description, summary, and critical evaluation of each work. What a Literature Review is NOT A subjective idea or thesis that contains no factual evidence or research (e.g. blog posts or encyclopedias.

9 What is a Peer Reviewed Journal? Also called "refereed journals" or "scholarly journals". Peer reviewed (refereed or scholarly) journals - Articles are written by experts and are reviewed by several other experts in the field before the article is published in the journal in order to insure the article's quality. In the Find Online Articles database, students may limit their search to only peer reviewed articles. Clicking on the blue link of the article, look further down on the page to see Peer Reviewed in bold and next to that it should say yes or no. Some examples information included in a peer reviewed article, that may not be peer reviewed are editorials and comments.
