2 WELCOME TO THE SAN LEANDRO PUBLIC LIBRARY The San Leandro Public Library is committed to providing a wide range of library services to the community at the Main Library and three neighborhood branches. Highlights of the Main Library include: Dedicated children s area with computers, an up-to-date collection of pictures books, easy readers, chapter books, nonfiction, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, and audio books. Dedicated teen area with study tables, teen computers, high interest fiction and non-fiction, classic novels, paperbacks, graphic novels, and magazines. 250,000+ books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, and other resources, with many new materials added each year. 75 computers Meeting rooms for rent Highlights of the Manor Branch Library include: Dedicated children s area with an up-to-date collection of pictures books, easy readers, chapter books, non-fiction, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, and audio books. Dedicated teen area with comfortable chairs, high interest fiction and non-fiction, paperbacks, graphic novels, and magazines. Hundreds of new books, CDs, videos, CD-ROMS, and other resource materials added each year. 27 computers 2 Study Rooms, each with seating for 6 and available for either quiet study or group study

3 Services for Teachers The Library offers many services for San Leandro teachers and students at the Library and online on our website at The San Leandro Public Library works in partnership with local schools to provide library services and materials to supplement the changing needs of teachers and students in the San Leandro Community. This brochure outlines our services for teachers. If you have an idea for another way we can serve you, please don t hesitate to contact us. School Outreach & Event Support If you have a literacy event, PTA meeting or similar event at your school, the Library would like to help! Phone us in advance at to discuss ways in which we can participate in your school or classroom event. Classroom Visits & Booktalks A teacher can schedule a time for a librarian to come to your classroom and bring several books on a specific topic your class Is studying. The librarian will give a brief talk about each book, helping children to become interested in books and aware of them as a resource. Research Presentations A librarian can visit your classroom to give a research presentation which includes an overview of library materials for research and how to access and use the library s catalog and online resources. (Best for grades 4 and 5).

4 Library Tours at Main and Manor We d love to meet your class! The library offers tours for TK through 5th grade, which can include getting library cards and checking out materials. Tours for grades TK-3rd include a readaloud. Tours for grades four and up can also include a story or a scavenger hunt. We will gladly tailor the tour to meet your class s needs, from an overview of the library to finding library materials to online search strategies, depending on what the students are currently learning. Tours take 30 minutes to one hour, depending on your class s grade level, needs and interests. To schedule a class visit to the San Leandro Public Library please call or us at least 3 weeks in advance: Main Library tours (510) Manor Branch Library tours (510) Each library can accommodate only one class tour at a time, and are subject to staff availability. Teachers can request library card applications for their students prior to the class visit (you can either come pick them up or check with the school office for a master copy to duplicate). Tips for a Successful Library Visit: If you plan to have students check out books at the end of their tour, please have each student fill out a library card application form, even if they already have a card. This allows us to update their card in advance of your visit (some cards expire after 1 year, others expire after 3 years). Turn in your card application forms 5 to 7 days before the tour so we can update and/or process the cards and check for overdue fines. If any of your students have substantial overdue fines, we will let you know in advance. Application forms that are turned in later than 5 to 7 days prior to tour, may not be processed in time. Ask students who already have a library card to bring it with

5 them on the day of the visit. When they return their completed library card application, we will update their library record, but will not issue them a new card if they have received one before For those students who had a card in the past but have lost it, please ask them to bring $3.00 for a replacement card if they want to check out books. After the tour, you may want to send a letter to the parents reminding them that their child visited the library and may have checked out materials which should be returned on time. Research Visits A teacher can schedule a library visit for the purpose of students selecting, using and checking out library materials. Please call ahead to schedule a class visit so a librarian can be available to assist you and your students with relevant materials. San Leandro History Room Tour Main Library The San Leandro History Room is a separate room at the Main Library with a special collection of non-circulating California and San Leandro history items The History Room tour will give students a chance to learn about the collection and view the displays. We can include a visit to the History Room during 3rd and 4th grade tours upon request. San Leandro History Museum Tours (3rd-4th grades) Explore San Leandro history at our Art & History Museum. The Museum is scheduling tours for 3rd and 4th grade classes. Space is limited. 6 Services for Teachers at the Library Free Library Cards Teachers Any teacher who teaches at a kindergarten-12 th grade public or private school in the incorporated limits of San Leandro or a designated school serving San Leandro residents may receive a free library card. Teachers with a Teacher Library card can check out children s books for six weeks. Please bring appropriate identification showing your employment at the school. Students Any student enrolled in a kindergarten-12 th grade public or private school in the incorporated limits of San Leandro or a designated school serving San Leandro residents may receive a free library card. Library card applications must be signed by a parent or guardian for anyone under the age of 14. Forms are available at the Circulation Desk. Classroom Book Requests Librarians can help you by selecting books on a specific topic, appropriate for your grade level, to be used in your classroom. You will need to fill out a Teacher Request Form for this service. Indicate the grade, level, topics, fiction or nonfiction, etc. Please phone the Main Library at at least 2 days in advance for this service. You can find a copy of the Teacher Request Form on the last page of this booklet, or on our website at > Children s page > Parents and Teachers page. Curriculum Support We offer materials of special interest to teachers: Special teacher shelf resource books, which contain activities, crafts, story stretchers, math games, and other specialized

7 books with ideas for classroom activities, as well as titles on classroom management, special needs learners, and more. Magazines such as Book Links, MultiCultural Review and Ed Digest. Online booklists for common core materials: Books, DVDs, magazines and CDs on topics that support your curriculum. Homework Assignment Support To work in collaboration with the public library, we suggest: Ask our librarians to set up a special reserve section of books on your specific topic, to be used in the library only, so that materials may be shared with all students working on the project. You may want to check the library catalog or call us to see what materials are available before making a research assignment. The number of books available on any particular topic may be limited, or there may not be appropriate books available for all grade levels. Consider allowing students to use resources from our online databases. Often excellent print-based resources are available through these online databases. Check with our librarians to see if other schools or classes have assigned the same topic at the same time. When possible, give written instructions to our librarians so we may better serve your students. Assignments can be phoned to the Main Library at or the Manor Branch at so we can prepare for your class. Displays of Class Work The library is happy to display student work on a bulletin board in the children s room at the Main or Manor branch libraries. Call the Main Library at two months in advance to set this up.

8 Online Books & Homework Materials for Students & Teachers Animated Books to Read Online TumbleBooks are animated, talking picture books, early readers and non-fiction books that you watch on your personal computer or ipad. Watch and listen, or practice your reading skills by reading along. These are great for English-language leaners too. To use TumbleBooks: Go to navigate to the Children s Page, then choose Books and Reading. Look for the Tumblebooks logo on the page, then click to enter their site. Download ebooks & Audiobooks The Library offers ebooks and audiobooks that can be checked out with your library card, then downloaded to a computer, ebook reader, or mobile device. Available 24/7 from the library s website No late fees All you need is an internet connection and a library card Enjoy titles on your computer, mobile device, Kindle, ipod and other devices! The children s ebook and audiobook collection includes new and popular fiction and nonfiction materials. It s all available anytime using an internet connection or your mobile device. 9 Online Resources Our online resources can be accessed from any computer with internet and your San Leandro Library card. This is a great option for homework assignments. Helpful homework databases & resources include: American History Online: covers 500 years of the history of America and its people. Find your famous person here!!! Ancient & Medieval History Online: for your Ancient Egypt, and Greek Mythology and Ancient Civilizations reports! InfoTrac: thousands of magazine and newspaper articles. Literature Resource Center: great resource for author reports; it contains thousands of author biographies and literary criticism. Marshall Cavendish State ebooks: offer a great source of quick and reliable information about individual states across America. NoveList: looking for great fiction? This fabulous resource lists book suggestions by age group, genre and offers read-alikes. World Book Online: includes thousands of encyclopedia articles and interactive content about animals, famous people, geography and more. World Book Kids offers great content for grades K-3, while World Book Student is best for grades 4-8. Enciclopedia Estudiantil offers Spanish language content. Live Homework Help: kids in grades K to 12 can log on for online homework help from a real, live tutor from 1pm to 10pm daily.
