1 Romeo and Juliet Research Project REVISED TASK: This assignment asks you to write a research paper and present your findings to the class. (Details on the presentation TBA) Sources: For your paper, you must use at least THREE sources. You must use two print sources (this means at some point your resource was in print) and one web source. Additional Requirements: 1. Source Sheets/Notes 2. Cover Page 3. Outline 4. Works Cited OVERVIEW: In preparation for reading Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, you will be researching medieval dating culture and considering the circumstances surrounding Romeo and Juliet s relationship. You will develop a thesis statement and write an essay surrounding the following research question: What circumstances of the 14th century (or the Middle Ages) made Romeo and Juliet's relationship difficult?

Transitional topic sentence introducing first circumstance for consideration B. Description of how lovers courted each other in the Middle Ages/evidence with citations provided Body Paragraph #2: Marriage Key words/ideas to use as you research: Arranged marriage, Parental involvement, Age, Gender roles, Ceremony, Rituals A. Transitional topic sentence introducing second circumstance for consideration B. Description of how lovers married each other in the Middle Ages/evidence with citations provided Body Paragraph #3: Role of Women Key words/ideas to use as you research: (roles of) women in the Middle Ages, medieval women A. Transitional topic sentence introducing third circumstance for consideration B. Description of a woman s role in the Middle Ages/evidence with citations provided Conclusion Paragraph A. Restated thesis B. Brief summary of main points proven within the essay C. Offer some insightful conclusions related to the argument of your paper D. 4 Research Project Grading Rubric REVISED ESSAY **If material is copied word for word without a citation and quotation marks, student will receive a 0 for that paragraph. Similarly, if a student paraphrases borrowed material and does not include a citation, student will receive a 0 for that paragraph** Introduction /20 points Strong hook or attention grabber related to the topic of the essay Brief plot summary of Romeo and Juliet is given including title, author, and genre Thesis statement previews and matches ideas presented in the essay Varied transitions are used throughout to create fluency Body Paragraph 1 /30 points Begins with a transitional topic sentence introducing first topic supports thesis statement Describes in detail how lovers courted each other in the Middle Ages Body Paragraph 2 /30 points Begins with a transitional topic sentence introducing second topic supports thesis statement Describes in detail how lovers married in the Middle Ages Body Paragraph 3 /30 points Begins with a transitional topic sentence introducing third topic supports thesis statement Describes in detail the role of women in the Middle Ages Conclusion /20 points Effectively restates thesis first Briefly reviews main points proven with the essay Relates main points of the essay back to thesis statement No new information is given Ends with an effective clincher leaving the reader with something to think about (So what?!)
