2 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY According to Merriam-Webster s Online Dictionary (2011), Annotate: to make critical or explanatory notes or comment Bibliography: the history, identification, or description of writings or publications The PURPOSE of an annotated bibliography is: To learn about a particular topic and read sources critically To demonstrate the value of a particular source To inform fellow or future researchers about a topic or a source To select credible sources for essay or presentation To organize information
3 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 4 STEPS for each source: 1) MLA-Formatted Citation 2) Summary 3) Critique 4) Application FOLLOW THIS ORDER!
4 ANNOTATED BIB. STEP 1: MLA CITATION Follow the provided formulas and examples! EVERYTHING COUNTS! Titles of articles in quotation marks, titles of websites in italics Period and comma placement Date order = 25 Jan Capitalize and spell titles, names, etc. correctly Order of information Use hanging indent Do NOT use easy bib, MS Word, or other citation machine See Purdue OWL website for help See the top of the front of your source sheet!
5 ANNOTATED BIB. STEP 2: SUMMARY Answer the following questions: What is the topic of the source? (Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?) What is the author s claim? What are the main ideas? What did you learn? If the source is a study, experiment, or interview: What actions did the author perform and why? What theory was the study etc. based on? What were the conclusions of the study etc.? See the middle of the front of your source sheet!
6 ANNOTATED BIB. STEP 3: CRITIQUE Answer the following questions: Is the article credible? Consider: author, date, bias, rhetorical devices (ethos/logos/pathos), mechanics, etc. You may also consider: What are the strengths and weaknesses of the article? How does this source compare to another source What, if any, information is missing? See the bottom of the front of your source sheet!
7 ANNOTATED BIB. STEP 4: APPLICATION Answer the following questions: How are you going to use this information in your essay? Does it provide basic facts that help your audience understand your topic? Will it help your provide background info in your introduction? Does it provide causes of your problem? Does it provide effects of your problem? Does it provide solutions of your problem? Does it address the counterclaim? Does this article provide new/different info on your topic? What type of support/evidence does it provide? See the right side of the back of your source sheet!
8 ANNOTATED BIB. OVERALL Include a heading (upper left) Include a title (Topic: An Annotated Bibliography, centered, capitalize and spell correctly, one title for entire annotated bib not per source, NO: bold/underline/ quotation marks/large font/italics) The Issue of Music Censorship: An Annotated Bibliography Alphabetize sources by first word of entry (not including a, an, or the, ; ALL sources listed on same document) Use Times New Roman, 12 point, black font throughout Double space MLA citation (step 1) Use a hanging indent for the MLA citation (step 1; no bullet points or numbering) Use paragraph format for the annotation (steps 2-4) Single space annotation (steps 2-4) Each annotation paragraph should be 7-11 sentences in length. (steps 2-4) Utilize correct grammar/style/conventions throughout NO citations crediting the source or outside sources The presence of the reference entry make citation redundant NO direct quotes Your reader will want to hear your interpretation of the material NO referrals to the first or second person Use 3 rd person; be objective and removed in your description of the source (NO I or you etc.) USE THIS AS AN EDITING CHECKLIST BEFORE SUBMITTING!

11 EXAMPLE FOR 1 SOURCE: CITATION SUMMARY CRITIQUE APPLICATION Parmesan, Camill, and Hector Galbraith. Executive Summary. Observed Impacts of Global Climate Change in the U.S. Pew Center on Global Climate Change, Nov Accessed 17 Jan This report summarizes recent scientific findings that document the impact changes in the climate have had on the distribution of plants and animals in the United States and on how they interact with their communities. For example, it explains how a shift has taken place in the blooming period for plants and the breeding period for animals caused by global warming. Because of changes in their geographic range, species may interact differently, possibly resulting in population declines. The report stresses that such shifts can harm the world s biodiversity. Plants and animals that are rare now face extinction. The annual cycle of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere has also changed, largely due to the lengthening of the growing season, affecting basic ecosystems. Written in 2007, this formal report was slightly more helpful than the other sources because its information is based on observations made specifically in the United States. The information appears reliable as it is based on scientific evidence as opposed to general assertions that may not be backed up by research. This source focuses on how plants and animals are currently affected, such as their shifting communities and how they are clashing. This source can be used to explain human changes by providing evidence of what is happening to other species. This source will not be as helpful in explaining the climate s effects on human biological function in particular, but it will provide some framework. For example, the source explains how the plants that help convert carbon dioxide into oxygen are being harmed and relate that to how the humans will suffer the consequences.
