Wrappers very slightly rubbed; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. Afrikaans text. John Philip, omstrede aanvoerder in hierdie konflik met die Kaaps-koloniale regering: "It was here the question was to be tried, whether the Hottentots were fit for freedom; and here it was decided."' 20,00 / R Aucamp, Hennie (editor): Op die Stormberge. 'n Vertolking van 'n streek (Cape Town: Tafelberg, 1971) 8vo; original brown boards, lettered in white on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper map; pp. (xii) (vi); line drawings; plates. Ex-library copy: dustwrapper browned and a little foxed, with tape reinforcing to reverse of spine panel; label remnant and "Withdrawn" stamps to front endpaper; scattered foxing; gum residue to lower board. Fair condition. Afrikaans text. "Op die Stormberge vertel die verhaal van die band tussen geslagte van mense en 'n stuk berg- en vlakte-wêreld van Noordoos-Kaapland - 'n gebied wat gedeeltes van die landdrosdistrikte Wodehouse, Molteno, Albert en Aliwal-Noord insluit." 10,00 / R Ball, Marjory: Donkey Days in Old Walmer. 'Nearly really true stories' (Port Elizabeth: Cue Publishers, 1989) 206 x 146 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. (ii) + 88; line drawings; portrait photograph inside upper cover. A little very light foxing. Very good condition. "The charming 'nearly really true' story of a family in Walmer (now a suburb of Port Elizabeth) in the first decade of this century. It is based on the real-life experiences of five children and the donkeys who were their friends. Although this is her first novel, stories by Marjorie Ball have been heard on Radio South Africa, and have appeared in the magazine section of Weekend Post - where Donkey Days ran as a serial." 15,00 / R270

4. Bezuidenhout, Ben: The to Grahamstown. The Story of the Blaauwkrantz Bridge Railway Disaster 22 April 1911 (Grahamstown: the author, no date) 207 x 151 mm; saddle-stitched pictorial card wrappers; pp. ii + 54; contemporary photographs; line drawings. Near-fine condition. "There was talk that the spiritual world was alive and well and out in full force the morning of 22 April The decision to build a railway bridge across the Blaauwkrantz appeared to some as if modern man with all the engineering skills at his command was challenging the spiritual world of Africa, and superstitious folk trembled at the consequences of this attackon the powerful realm of spirits." 12,50 / R Birrell, Harry (author), and John Axe (editor): Evergreen. The History of the D.S.G. Grahamstown (Grahamstown: Diocesan School for Girls, 1999) Author's presentation inscription to verso of front free endpaper; owner's name signed on front free endpaper. 8vo; original dark green rexine, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; street plans to endpapers; pp. (viii) (vii); liberally illustrated. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed and edgeworn; occasional very minor fox spot. Very good condition. "This is the story of a school founded in 1874 on the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony, South Africa, the story of a girls' school founded at a time when education for young women had just begun to be taken seriously by a few women (and fewer men) who could see sufficiently ahead of their own times. It is the story of the principles on which that school was founded, of its early struggle to survive, and of its growth over 125 years of turbulent world and South African history." 12,50 / R Briggs, Johnny: Early Days in Addo. The start of the Sundays River Settlements Scheme in 1920 (Addo: the author, 2002) 210 x 147 mm; saddlestitched pictorial card wrappers; pp. 24; monochrome illustrations. Very good condition. "The First World War ended in 1918, returning many able young men to civilian life in England without much hope of jobs. Peacetime commerce and industry had virtually come to a standstill as a result of the War Effort, and jobs were scarce. My father Kit and his elder brother Arthur, fresh out of uniform, found themselves without prospects, as their father had died young and the family business had come to an end. They chanced upon a curious advertisement extolling the virtues of a new Settlement Scheme in faraway South Africa, promoted by an enterprise calling itself the Cape Sundays River Settlement Company. People were looking to the colonies for entrepreneurial opportunities, and the two brothers aged nineteen and twenty-one, announced their intention of taking part in this pioneering venture.... and so it was that in 1919 the two brothers and their mother had a meeting with Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, then in London on a promotional visit. He painted a glowing picture of the scheme, albeit still very much in its infancy, so their mother capitulated and advanced them the money to buy a 12ha farm in Addo, from the offices of the Company in London." 10,00 / R180

7. Brownlee, Charles: Reminiscences of Kafir Life & History and other papers (Lovedale: Lovedale Mission Press, 1916, Second Edition) 8vo; original purple cloth blocked in black to upper cover; re-backed with gilt-lettered red leatherette; new endpapers; pp. x + (ii) + 384; plates. Original cloth partially discoloured and edges of boards a bit worn; occasional fox spot. Good to very good condition, with a serviceable restoration to the spine. (Schapera E574 [1st ed.]; Mendelssohn I, p. 205 [1st ed.]) 'Mr. Brownlee wrote a number of papers on native history and affairs, many of which found their way into the Blue Books of the period, but most of the narratives included in this volume were dictated by the author at a time when he was too feeble to write, and were afterwards prepared for the press by Mr. Andrew Smith. Many of these include interesting and valuable records of Kaffraria, and amongst these may be mentioned the articles on "Sandilli," and on the "Pondos, Xesibes, and the Colonial Government." There are also papers on the Basuto War of 1880, and on "Natal and Zululand, fifty years ago," whilst Mrs. Brownlee contributed the chapters on the "Cattle Killing Delusion," and the memoir of Mr. Brownlee.' - Mendelssohn. "Mainly historical and biographical sketches, with some remarks on witchcraft, superstitions, and betrothal." - Schapera 50,00 / R Brownlee, W. T.: Reminiscences of a Transkeian (Pietermaritzburg: Shuter and Shooter, 1975) 8vo; original green boards; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. (xii) + 156, incl. index; frontis. portrait, photographs, map. Dustwrapper a bit rubbed and edgeworn, with earlier owner's tape repairs to reverse; light foxing to edges, endpapers and outermost leaves. Good condition. 'William Thomson Brownlee served in the Native Affairs Department in the Transkeian Territories from 1876 until 1916 when he retired as Chief Magistrate in charge of the administration of those Territories. Of him it was said, "he had a wonderful knowledge of native character and mentality. He spoke the language perfectly. In his knowledge of native custom, history and tradition he was without equal. He had the pen of a ready writer and the Dispatch had from time to time the privilege of publishing articles by him in its columns." (Daily Dispatch, May 1933).... W. T. Brownlee was the grandson of the Rev. John Brownlee of the London Missionary Society who came to this country in 1817 and worked first among the Hottentots and then among the Xhosa until his retirement in The mission station which he established on the Buffalo River in 1825 led to the founding of King William's Town. He collaborated in a Xhosa translation of the New Testament. The author's father, the Hon. Charles Brownlee, C.M.G., became the first Minister for Native Affairs in the Cape Colony in The record of his lifetime of service among the Xhosas was published in his "Reminiscences" in 1896.' 20,00 / R Burton, A. W.: The Highlands of Kaffraria (Cape Town: Struik, 1969) Author's signed presentation inscription to half-title. Subititle reads: A review of outstanding incidents in Kaffirland and British Kaffraria leading up to the rise of King William's Town, Keiskama Hoek and East London, with special reference to the history and situation of Fort Stokes. Squarish 8vo; original red cloth-backed grey papered boards,

lettered in gilt on spine, with publisher's gilt emblem to upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper maps; pp. (viii) + 67, incl. index; frontis.; plates. Dustwrapper a little rubbed, sunned and foxed; trace of foxing to edges and endpapers. Good to very good condition. "This... handbook... contains information on the factual history of King William's Town, Keiskama Hoek, and the Port of East London, combined with urgent military affairs and notable conflicts in the early [Frontier] Wars, insurrections and tribal rebellions, quelled by gallant pioneers - Highlanders and Colonial Burgher Forces - well supported by many local non-european levies of Africans, Fingos and coloured troops who fought under European leaders in almost impregnable, forested and precipitous mountain ranges devoid of serviceable artillery and commissariat roads." 12,50 / R Burton, A.W.: Sparks from the Border Anvil (King William's Town: Provincial Publishing Company, 1950) Signed by the author on half-title. 8vo; original red cloth; pictorial dustwrapper; xxii (3); maps, plates. Dustwrapper slightly edgeworn, and a little rubbed to lower panel; spine tanned; a little foxing. Very good condition. "Stories of the overcoming of the evils of witchcraft prevalent throughout the Transkeian and Border areas provide fascinating reading. A unique and interesting record of the strivings and achievements of those who laid the foundations of peace and prosperity in the Border districts of the Cape eastern frontier." 20,00 / R Coleman, Francis L., and Tony Farnell: St Aidan's College, Grahamstown (Grahamstown: Institute of Social & Economic Research, Rhodes University, 1980) 8vo; original brown boards, lettered in gilt on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. xiv + 138, incl. index; several plates; floor plans. Merest trace of foxing to endpapers and outermost leaves. Near-fine condition. 'St Aidan's College, once the premier Catholic College in South Africa, was the victim both of the times and of tragic misfortune. Here, from a professional historian, we have the stirring tale from its humble beginnings, based on hope for the future, as a seminary for Catholic priests, and much more importantly in the long run, as a pioneer model in Southern Africa of the famous Jesuit Colleges, Beaumont, Stonyhurst and the rest, which gave the Society of Jesus its well-earned reputation as the "schoolmasters of Europe". The decline and final closure of St Aidan's is analysed in depth. Professor Coleman served throughout its existence on the Interim College Council, latterly as Chairman of the Finance Committee, and was party to all the decisions of that body. The combination of historical scholarship with personal inside information makes for fascinating reading.' 25,00 / R Currey, R. F.: St. Andrew's College Grahamstown (Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1955) 8vo; original dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt crest to upper cover; dustwrapper (housed in removable protector); pp. 188, incl. index;

plates. Rather foxed to endpapers, outermost leaves and edges, scattered foxing elsewhere. Good condition. "This is the tale of a South African school founded a hundred years ago in the full tide of those Arnold reforms which were to bring so many famous schools to birth in nineteenth century England. But St. Andrew's College was set up on the Eastern Frontier of South Africa as it then was; in what was a Military Headquarters through the long series of frontier wars. For Grahamstown lies at what was the point of impact, as Mr. H. V. Morton points out in his Foreword, between the European Settlers coming in from the west and from overseas and the African tribes pressing down from the north and east. So the school had a stormy infancy; and there were further storms ahead in the 'colonial' period that was to follow. Emerging from these cramping conditions St. Andrews stands to-day, on the threshold of its second century, as a completely South African school which is yet not unmindful of the rock whence it is hewn." 10,00 / R Dennison, Clive: A History of the Wild Coast (Ashburton: Brevitas, 2010) Large 8vo; laminated pictorial boards; pp. xxii + 340, incl index; map, artwork, photographs, incl. some colour. Fine condition. Greatly expanded version of Clive Dennison's regional history. From the preface to the earlier edition: "Many people, including myself, have very fond memories of childhood holidays on the Wild Coast. The smell of road dust, thatch and coastal bush transports me back to those happy times.... This book presents some of what I have found out as an amateur explorer wandering about, asking questions." 25,00 / R Derbyshire, Deric: Old Pier Street (Port Elizabeth: the author, ca 2003) Author's presentation inscription to first blank. 203 x 144 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. (ii) (ii); photographs. Discreet archival tape reinforcing at tail of spine. Very good condition. A history of the ninety years of Port Elizabeth's Pier Street Methodist church, demolished in February ,00 / R Dixon, Dorothy (compiler): Martindale Then and Now. A Sketch of Two Centuries ([Grahamstown]: the author, 2008) 207 x 148 mm; saddlestitched pictorial card wrappers; pp. 100; photographs; facsimiles; map. Near-fine condition. "By contacting other folk who have called Martindale home, or who have knowledge of the area, a wealth of information has been gleaned. It is hoped that the following record will be of interest to all interested in local history.... First, an attempt must be made to define what constitutes the Martindale area. Its northern boundary is easily defined by the Kap River hills and valley from the source of that river to approximately opposite Round Hill (Mount Donkin). In the other directions it is more difficult to define with precision, there being no defining geographical features. Therefore, depending on the interests of its occupants, a borderline farm could have been included from time to

time in the adjoining Blaauwkrantz, Langholm, Clumber, Trappes Valley or Shaw Park areas." 15,00 / R Gore, James (compiler): A Short History of the Albany Museum (Grahamstown: Trustees of the Albany Museum, 2005) Cover title reads: Albany Museum Celebrating 150 Years of Heritage. 208 x 148 mm; pictorial card wrappers; pp. (ii) + 58; several photographs. Near-fine condition. "On 3 July 1855, a group of four doctors, Hutton, Edmunds, Armstrong and Atherstone, and Mr A L McDonald, an officer of the garrison Ordnance Department, met for the purpose of forming a medical society. At this meeting, with Dr W G Atherstone in the chair, the 'Graham's Town Medico-Chirurgical Society' was formed... Proposed by Assistant Surgeon George Hutton, the Society had two objectives: 'to facilitate intercourse on professional subjects', and to 'collect specimens in the various departments of Medical Science in all its branches, with the view of forming the nucleus of a Museum'." 12,50 / R Gray, Fergus, and Alice Mertens: Pride of South Africa 10. The Xhosa (Cape Town: Purnell, 1973) Small 4to (232 x 173 mm); pictorial boards; pp. (ii) + 24; map; photographs in colour and monochrome. Boards a bit scuffed; occasional fox spot. Good. "Since it is not possible to describe all of the many variations in the beliefs and customs of the numerous tribal groups of the Xhosaspeaking people, the text of this volume is generally confined to those of the pure Xhosa tribal complex only. The photographs, however, are more general, illustrating people and landscapes typical of a number of tribal groups of the Transkei and Ciskei regions." 5,00 / R Holt, Basil: Greatheart of the Border. A Life of John Brownlee, Pioneer Missionary in South Africa (King William's Town: The South African Missionary Museum, 1976) 208 x 148 mm; pictorial wrappers; endpaper map; pp (xvi), incl. index; plates. Trace of foxing. Small scar to upper cover from earlier price sticker; occasional fox spot. Very good condition. "From a humble background in Scotland, John Brownlee emigrated and became an outstanding missionary pioneer and a maker of modern South Africa. In this the first biography devoted to his memory, his story is traced from the banks of the Clyde to the banks of the Tyhume and the Buffalo Rivers and through the Frontier Wars in which he saw his mission station burnt to the ground - now the old Residency in King William's Town. The book is the result of much research in Scotland, England and South Africa and is told largely from Brownlee's own letters and reports home to the London Missionary Society." 12,50 / R Keppel-Jones, Arthur (editor): Philipps, 1820 Settler. His letters, edited by Arthur Keppel-Jones in consultation with Philipps' great-granddaughter E. K. Heathcote (Pietermaritzburg: Shuter and Shooter, 1960) 8vo; original dark blue cloth, titled in gilt on spine and upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper

maps; frontis.; pp Dustwrapper edgeworn and a little rubbed, with archival tape repair to head of spine panel; trace of foxing to endpapers and top edge. Very good condition, in a good dustwrapper. "The adventures of an 1820 settler and his family with lively comments about the settlement as a whole and about many of the settlers. Written entirely by the 1820 settler Thomas Philipps." 15,00 / R Lister, J. S.: Echoes from the Past. A Brief History of the Hogsback ([Cathcart]: privately published, no date) Title from upper cover. 210 x 147 mm; saddle-stitched printed stiff card wrappers; pp. 27; map. Wrappers rather soiled, with trace of silver fish attention to upper cover, and a felt pen scribble to lower cover; scattered foxing. Fair condition. Uncommon local history of this charming forested retreat in the Eastern Cape. 7,50 / R McAllister, P. A.: Umsindleko: a Gcaleka ritual of incorporation (Grahamstown: Rhodes University, 1981) Occasional Paper Number Twenty-Six, Institute of Social and Economic Research. 226 x 158 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. iv Slightly rubbed; occasional fox spot. Good to very good condition. "The Gcaleka people of the Transkei speak of going out to work in the urban-industrial centres of South Africa as going to 'war' and celebrate the return of a migrant worker with joy and thanksgiving. One of the rituals which marks return is a beer drink called umsindleko. In this study umsindleko is examined within the context of a series of ritual events associated with labour migration, and against a background of economic dependence on the earnings of migrant workers. Drawing extensively on the skilful oratory performed at umsindleko the relationship between Gcaleka society and the world of wage employment is explored, in an attempt to illustrate the 'meaning' of labour migration to the people involved in it." 20,00 / R Meiring, Jane, and others: The Kenton Story (Kenton-on-Sea: privately published, 2008) Cover title reads: 'The Kenton Story by Jane Meiring (Marquard) & the People of Kenton-on-Sea. Edited by Susan Richards'. 207 x 147 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp. 133, incl. index; monochrome illustrations. Lower cover very slightly rubbed and creased. Very good condition. "Written in 1989, Jane Meiring's original manuscript provided an entertaining and interesting history of a small village in the Eastern Cape. Kenton-on-Sea and its neighbour, Bushmans River Mouth have a special place in the memories of many people and Christmas holidays at the sea have become a tradition for many families. After Jane's death, a group of dedicated people decided to republish her story. As so much has changed in the area since 1986, a decision was made to provide updates where necessary in order to add to her tale about this small, vibrant town." - From the editor's note. 15,00 / R270

23. Metrowich, F. C.: Frontier Flames (Cape Town: Books of Africa, 1968) Illustrations by Penny Miller. 8vo; pictorial papered boards; pictorial dustwrapper; endpaper map; pp. (vi) + 286, incl. index; line drawings, and a double-page colour plate. Clear tape reinforcing to reverse of spine panel at head; earlier owner's name on title page; scattered light foxing. Very good condition. "Frontier Flames is the story of the frontiersmen and settlers of Southern Africa, and especially of the Eastern Cape. Set down on a desolate coast with their wives and children, a few sheep and oxen, wagons and tents, and told never to go out ploughing without their guns, these settlers of the Eastern Cape faced a difficult and precarious existence. Trouble with the Xhosa tribes soon started. Continual cattle raids were a constant irritation, and, despite the various frontier policies pursued by governors of the Cape, battle after battle took place. Yet life on the frontier was gay and exciting too. There was the gallant lion- and lady-killer, Roualeyn Gordon Cumming, who set hearts aflame wherever he went. Coenraad de Buys - rebel, outlaw, tough freebooter, Xhosa chieftain and the founder of a people; Helen, the woman gun-runner and revengeful Lady Godiva; the militant chaplains of the City of Saints; the first anaesthetic in Southern Africa; the raving Rajah; the quest for the Evans-type ostrich feather and Emperor Norton I are some of the colourful personalities and amazing incidents in the story of the flaming frontier of the Eastern Cape." 10,00 / R Morange, Marianne: La question du logement à Mandela-City (ex-port Elizabeth) (Paris: KARTHALA / Johannesburg: IFAS, 2006) 240 x 160 mm; pictorial wrappers; pp (iv); graphs; maps; illustrations. Very good condition. French text. Analysis of post-apartheid housing in Port Elizabeth. "Dix ans plus tard, la question du logement demeure d'actualité tandis que le recul rend possible les premiers bilans. C'est ce que se propose de faire cet ouvrage: à travers le cas de Mandela-City (ex. Port Elizabeth), il revient sur les choix qui ont été faits dans les années 1990 par des pouvoirs publics embarrasses pour trancher entre retrait et interventionnisme." 15,00 / R Palmer, Eve: The Plains of Camdeboo (London: Collins, 1966) 8vo; original biscuit-coloured boards; pictorial dustwrapper (housed in removable protector); endpaper maps; pp. 320, incl. index; plates. Dustwrapper very slightly rubbed to extremities of sunned spine panel; a little foxing to endpapers, edges and outermost leaves. Good to very good condition. "Great as is Eve Palmer's scientific knowledge, the dominant impression which she communicates is of enthusiasm, of passionate selfidentification with her subject. Here is a book which is not autobiography, not history, not a botanical treatise, but all of them and more blended into a uniquely vivid and personal account of one of the world's strangest and most unfamiliar regions." 7,50 / R135

26. Pauw, H. C.: Die Xhosa ([Grahamstown]: [Rhodes University], 1981) 207 x 147 mm; cloth-backed card wrappers; pp.166; maps; diagrams. Wrappers foxed, scuffed; earlier owner's name and hand-stamp on front cover verso; some pencilled underlining and marginalia. Fair to good condition. Afrikaans text. An English translation of this work, which is exceedingly uncommon in whatever form, not being found by OCLC, was issued as Occasional Paper No. 42 of the University of Port Elizabeth's Institute for Planning Research. A thorough study of the anthropology of the Xhosa, one of South Africa's most prominent tribal groupings, by a leading authority, renowned for his work on the urbanisation of Xhosa people. 15,00 / R Pedersen, Connie (compiler): Down Memory Lane at Riet River (no place: the author, 1988) 210 x 160 mm; ring-bound card wrappers; printed rectos; pp. (v) + 142; photographs and facsimiles. Lower cover a bit creased; some fox spots to wrappers. Very good condition. 'A group of folk were sitting on the verandah of Happidaze one holiday "swopping yarns" of the "good old days" of Riet River. One of the younger members of the group said, "You should really write these stories down, because soon the older generation will all be dead, and no one will be able to remember the early days." So this record has been collected and written down with the help of many people!' 30,00 / R Peires, J. B.: The House of Phalo. A History of the Xhosa People in the Days of their Independence (Johannesburg: Ravan Press, 1981) Signed by the author on the title page. 217 x 148 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. x + 281, incl. index; maps; plates. Crease to lower cover; light browning throughout; scattered foxing. Good condition. "The House of Phalo is the first history of the Xhosa to appear in over fifty years, and the only one to draw fully on both oral and written sources." 15,00 / R Pringle, Thomas (author), and John Robert Wahl (editor): Thomas Pringle in South Africa (Cape Town: Longman Southern Africa, 1970) 212 x 135 mm; pictorial card wrappers; pp. xi + (i) + 208; map; line drawings in text. Very good condition. "Thomas Pringle, South Africa's first poet and the most gifted writer among the 1820 Settlers, was born on a farm in Roxburghshire on the Scottish border on January 5th, 1789, and arrived in South Africa on the brig Brilliant on the last day of April, His account of his life in South Africa, A Narrative of a Residence in South Africa, is one of the classics of frontier literature of the Nineteenth Century... The aim of the present edition is to make Pringle's Narrative more accessible to the general reader by eliminating all extensive borrowings from other authors and other secondary material, and by concentrating throughout on what Pringle calls his 'personal' narrative. It will be of great interest for the general reader

as well as those who have their roots in the settlement of the 1820's, and also for those who have an interest in this most exciting period of South African history." 7,50 / R Raath, Mike, with Dorothy Pitman and Jenny Bennie (compilers and editors): Museums of the Eastern Cape (Port Elizabeth: South African Museums Association, Eastern Cape, 1996) 210 x 148 mm; saddle-stitched pictorial wrappers; pp. (ii) + 118; charming line drawings of the museum buildings; folding colour map; a few adverts. Bottom edge of lower cover and final leaves a bit rippled. Good condition. Invaluable publication for anyone seeking information on highlights of museums throughout the Eastern Cape province, with notes on facilities and outstanding exhibits. 10,00 / R Schnell, E. L. G.: For Men Must Work. An account of German immigration to the Cape with special reference to the German Military Settlers of 1857 and the German Immigrants of 1858 (Port Elizabeth: Des Kopke, 1999) Text facsimile of the Maskew Miller edition of 1954, with the addition of the new publisher's foreword; pictorial wrappers; pp (ii), incl. index; illustrations; map. Lightly sunned on spine and adjacent portion of lower cover. Very good condition. Despite the author's modesty as to this work's completeness, it remains the definitive publication on the subject. "The important years have been dealt with only in the general histories of Dr. Theal and Sir George Cory and in the minor works of Pastor J. Spanuth. In each case the treatment is inadequate.... The immigration movements of are barely mentioned in any work. This book seeks to fill at least a few of the lacunae, but much remains to be done before a full and complete history can be written. Then, too, the role of the German Legionaries and Immigrants has never been integrated into the wider field of frontier policy. Though they were not aware of it, the settlement of the Germans in among the Xhosas was a new expedient and a further experiment to solve frontier problems. The success of the Immigrants as colonizers contributed in no small measure towards perpetuating this system and shaping Cape Native policy." 45,00 / R Schoonees, L. J.: Steytlerville en sy mense. Dustwrapper rubbed and edgeworn; scattered, light foxing. Good condition. Afrikaans text. "Die Eeufeesviering as sodanig is maar kort van duur. Die geskiedenis van die dorp en sy mense is blywend. 13 33. Shuttleworth, Stanley G: Kenton Kaleidoscope. An Illustrated Story of Bushmans and Kenton (Kenton on Sea: the author, 1995) Author's signed presentation inscription to title page. 210 x 148 mm; saddle-stitched pictorial wrappers; pp. (viii) + 75; photographs and artwork, in colour and monochrome. Wrappers a little rubbed. Good condition. "Reflecting on the sixty two years during which my family has enjoyed the amenities of Kenton on Sea, I find that my verbal memory which guides my pen relies largely on the kaleidoscope of my visual memory. Therefore I have included fifty seven pictures as an essential part of this book, which is meant to entertain. There is also a serious side to the development of Kenton on Sea. I have given an account of some of the highlights of my sixteen years as Chairman of the Bushmans Kariega Trust, during which we have fought to prevent our village from becoming one of those overdeveloped seaside resorts which have faced serious environmental problems." 7,50 / R Smith, Kenneth Wyndham: From Frontier to Midlands. A History of the Graaff-Reinet District, (Grahamstown: Institute of Social and Economic Research, Rhodes University, 1976) Occasional Paper Number Twenty. 233 x 162 mm; card wrappers; pp. xix + (i) + 406, incl. index; maps; monochrome illustrations, incl. folding. The Graaff-Reinet district of 1798 (the first occasion on which its northern border was defined) embraced an area which in 1966 comprised well over twenty magisterial districts. The comments of Gavin Stewart, former editor of The Daily Dispatch, remain true: "Nobody could be better equipped than Mike Thompson to lead the reader on a tour of the Transkei trading stations south of the Mzimvubu River. He spent almost his whole working life driving these hills and valleys, calling on the traders, making friends and hearing their stories and histories. He came to know, along the way, the most beautiful stopoffs, the finest fishing spots, the best hostelries to overnight and a great many one-of-a-kind characters. His travels probably spanned the prime years of the trading stations, after the privations brought by the Second World War and before apartheid was enforced. To his years of personal experiences Mike has added hundreds of hours of painstaking archival research, fitting the past to the present to build up mini-biographies of several hundred trading stations. Over almost a century and in spite of the distances between them, the traders formed a community of interests and friendships; they met around wholesalers and schools; tennis, golf and above all fishing; their sons and daughters married one another. Anybody with connections to the Transkei - by family ties, friendship or affection - will find many familiar names and places in these pages. Mike Thompson has put together a huge human map of the Transkei trading stations." 35,00 / R Watts, H. L., and J. A. I. Agar-Hamilton: Border Port. 15 "... it will be seen that while there are studies of the Border region, which give a picture of the economic, industrial, and physical features of the dominant centre of East London and of its Bantu population, no detailed study of the White population of the city had, prior to 1964, been published. So it was that in 1964 the present study was commenced as primarily a sociological analysis of the White population of East London. It was designed to deal with this gap in our knowledge of the region. The study includes a description of the historical development of the city, and some reference to its regional setting. The White population of the city is analysed in some detail. Taken together with an attitude survey of White adult males in East London published in 1967 and the author's study of King William's Town, it provides a picture of the White population of the two main urban areas of the Border region." 15,00 / R270 MILITARY HISTORY 39. Near-fine condition. "John Bazley came to Natal in 1850 as a Byrne Settler. He was the first man to pitch his tent at Richmond and soon moved to the Ifafa area where he established the sugar estate Nil Desperandum. The family encountered wild animals, cannibals and shipwrecks in their quest to tame this land. John's son William went on to open up the Umzimkulu River at Port Shepstone to shipping. Years of underwater blasting, toil and hardship saw the channel deep enough for small steamers to enter the river alongside Bazley's famous wall. This is their story." 15,00 / R Beinart, William: Twentieth-Century South Africa (Cape Town: Oxford University Press, 1994) Paperback, laminated pictorial wraps, pp. xvi Text very slightly browned. Near fine condition. 'Africa in the twentieth century. It draws on the rich and lively tradition of radical history writing on that country and, to a greater extent than previous accounts, weaves economic and cultural history into the political narrative. Apartheid and industrialization, especially mining, are central themes, as is the rise of nationalism in the Afrikaner and African communities. But the author also emphasizes the neglected significance of rural experiences and local identities in shaping political consciousness. The roles played by such key figures as Smuts, Verwoerd, de Klerk, Plaatje, and Mandela are explored, while recent historiographical trends are reflected

in analyses of rural protest, white cultural politics, the vitality of black urban life, and environmental decay. The book concludes with an analysis of black reactions to apartheid, the rise of the ANC, and an assessment of the chances of a stable political future for a post-apartheid South Africa.' 5,00 / R Bergh, J. S. and A. P.: Tribes & Kingdoms (Cape Town: Don Nelson, 1987) 279 x 215 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 80, incl. index; profusely illustrated with maps and contemporary illustrations, several of which in full colour. Wrappers very slightly rubbed; bump to bottom fore-corner; occasional faint fox spot. Very good condition. "In Southern Africa the 19th century saw the rise and fall of the mighty Zulu empire, and the breaking away of Shaka's warrior, Mzilikazi, to forge his own powerful Ndebele (Matabele) nation in the interior. During the Difaqane, marauding tribes like the 'Mantatees' led by the Tlokwa warrior queen Mmanthatisi scattered more peaceful peoples and cut a swathe of destruction and suffering across the sub-continent. A wise chief named Moshweshwe built a new Basotho nation with diplomacy and courage, while in the south the Xhosa-speaking tribes - who had been the first to come face to face with the Dutch and the British - struggled to keep their independence. A complex century of colonisation has been admirably analysed and condensed to provide a highly readable and informative overview of a crucial area in South African history. A series of freshly drawn maps further clarifies a history concerned with the shaping and breaking of many different nations and empires. Numerous illustrations, many in full colour, bring to life the vanished faces and costumes of a remarkable century." 7,50 / R Beukes, Piet: The Romantic Smuts. Women and love in his life (Cape Town: Human & Rousseau, 1992) 8vo; laminated pictorial boards; pp. 176; plates. Sunned on spine. Very good condition. "He accorded the indigenous populations and their customs a respect they had not enjoyed before in the colonies, and he was the first to record the Maori folklore, anthropology and language. He founded hospitals and schools for all races in New Zealand and South Africa. Often against popular opinion and sometimes at his own expense, he paved the way for the education of all. Abhorrent as he found so much African superstition, the Cattle-Killing delusion especially, he equally loathed the racial attitudes of so many of his fellow British. When he died he was given a state funeral attended by royalty and the elite of the day, and he was buried in St Paul's Cathedral in a place of honour amongst his country's greatest men. Truly a hero to an age." 20,00 / R Bradlow, Frank R.: The Contributions of Thomas Baines to South Africa (Grahamstown: The 1820 Settlers National Monument Foundation, 1975) 214 x 140 mm; saddle-stitched card wrappers; pp. (ii) + 32; portrait. Wrappers a bit foxed. Good to very good condition. Published in the centenary year of Baines' birth, this is a review of the life of the artist and explorer, including his participation "in the... struggles and achievements of the [1820] Settlers and their descendents", "his background and subsequent adventurous career." 7,50 / R Buckle, Catherine: African Tears. The Zimbabwe Land Invasions (Johannesburg: Covos Day, 2001) 218 x 150 mm; pictorial wraps; pp. xiv A little brown spotting to textblock edges. Very good condition. "African Tears is the story of a white farmer in Zimbabwe, living side by side with war veterans for 7 months. The veterans claimed the small 1,000-acres farm belonged to their ancestors. For 7 months they watched and intimidated, claiming the farm field by field, 'liberating' the small stock dams and then the timber plantation. The farm was claimed as a war veterans headquarters and every weekend political meetings were held in the field below the house - with hundreds in attendance." 10,00 / R Couper, Scott: Albert Luthuli. Bound by Faith (Pietermaritzburg: University of KwaZulu-Natal Press, 2010) 230 x 148 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xi + (i) + 291, incl. index; plates. Very good condition. "Many myths assert that Chief Albert Luthuli, former President of the African National Congress (ANC), launched the armed struggle on his return to South Africa after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. This misinterpretation sparks what is arguably one of the most relevant and controversial historical debates in South Africa. In what is the

first substantive biography of Luthuli, Scott Couper challenges a nationalist-inspired perspective and argues that the iconic leader did not countenance the initiation of violence in December Luthuli's ecclesiastical tradition, Congregationalism, imbedded within him the primacy of democracy, education, sacrificial service, multiracialism and egalitarianism, propelling him to the heights of political leadership. These same attributes rendered Luthuli obsolete as a political leader within an increasingly radicalised, desperate and violent environment. By not supporting the ANC's armed movement, his political career proved to be 'bound by faith'." 15,00 / R Feinstein, Andrew: After the Party. A Personal and Political Journey Inside the ANC (Johannesburg: Jonathan Ball Publishers, 2008) Author's signed presentation inscription to title page. 232 x 152 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xiv + 287, incl. index. Near fine condition. "Andrew Feinstein became an active supporter of the African National Congress in the 1980s, and campaigned energetically for the party in the first democratic elections. He was elected to parliament where he rose swiftly through the ranks, earning the label 'Mr Clean' for his unstinting work against corruption. But his feelings of euphoria at being part of the new South Africa slowly soured. Disappointed by the constant jockeying for power and the views held by President Thabo Mbeki on HIV/AIDS, Feinstein's disillusionment grew as he sought unsuccessfully to investigate the corruption surrounding the infamous arms deal. Isolated from his former comrades, some of them senior members of government, Feinstein was ultimately forced to choose between his principles and the party he had so admired. After the Party reveals the explosive details of what really happened in the arms deal: the personalities, the cover-up and the corruption. It also provides insight into current South African politics and battles within the ANC." 15,00 / R Hagen, J., and others (editorial committee): Gedenkboek uitgegeven door de Vereniging van Onderwijzers en Onderwijzeressen in Zuid- Afrika bij Gelegenheid van het Vijfentwintig-jarig bestaan, April, 1918 (Pretoria: J. Dustwrapper a little foxed and browned; some minor foxing to edges, endpapers and outermost leaves. Good to very good condition. 'Sir Harry Smith, with his military bearing and romantic marriage to the Spanish Juana, so captured the imagination of his contemporaries in South Africa, that the country has named three towns after him as well as a fourth, after Aliwal in India,

where he led the British army to victory over the Sikhs. Today Harry Smith is not regarded as great, but in his own time he was extremely important. Harry Smith spent some fifteen years in South Africa ( ; ) first at the centre of complex and controversial affairs on the eastern frontier ( ) and later as an active, confident but eventually harrassed and embattled governor and high commissioner ( ). Dr Harington, in this penetrating study of early Victorian society and the British military system, has been entirely concerned with an attempt to see Smith as he was, in the context of his time, and not to laud his dash and vigour, to destroy his credibility or to make fun of his eccentric behaviour.' 20,00 / R Hoste, 'Skipper': Gold Fever (Salisbury: Pioneer Head, 1977) Edited by N. Ownership inscription inside upper cover; pertinent newspaper clipping tipped in on final blank. Very good condition. "When Jake White took over as Springbok coach in 2004, few supporters - and even fewer Springbok rugby players - could ever have believed that the squad he would build over four years would bring home the Webb Ellis Trophy. In Black and White is the gripping autobiography of only the second man to coach the Springboks to World Cup glory. White's story is characterised by intense determination to succeed against all odds, from a troubled childhood to his eventual elevation to arguably the toughest job in world sport. White takes readers into rugby's inner sanctum, where politicking and hidden agendas sometimes supersede the best interests of the sport, and relates the incredible highs and desperate lows of being part of the Springbok set-up. Administrative and political interference, press and public criticism, player injuries and personal sacrifices are all part and parcel of a Springbok coach's life, and White covers all these subjects in his riveting, controversial, sometimes amusing and often unbelievable story." 7,50 / R135
