Main Street Welcomes Secretariat Festival Coinciding with the Artwalk, the seventh annual Secretariat Festival will be holding festivities around Bourbon County for two days, making it bigger than ever. The festival is brought to Paris to honor the 1973 Triple Crown Winner, Secretariat. After his astounding achievements, Secretariat lived on Claiborne Farm. Pre-festival activities start on Thursday, September 18 at the Hopewell Museum. At 5:30 pm the museum will be hosting Showcasing the Barrel Mane-ia Preview, a display of hand-painted mini-barrels that reflect the Bluegrass heritage and equine culture. The festival kicks-off in Downtown Paris on Friday, September 19 with the Artwalk at 5 PM. At 6PM join author and journalist Bill Nack as he shares his favorite stories about Big Red. His biography Secretariat, a Making of a Champion inspired the Disney major motion picture, Secretariat. This event will be held at 205 Main Street, which is the future location of the Thoroughbred Breeders Museum. The museum will also be featuring one-of-a-kind wardrobe from the movie, as well as Secretariat-themed artwork. At 9 PM that same night the Barrel-Mane-ia party will be held at the Oasis Events. Bluegrass musical group Arthur and Arthur, the father/son duo of Stone Farm, will be the entertainment for the night. The Downtown area is also hosting a Downtown Paris Smartphone Scavenger Hunt on September 19. Follow the clues, take selfies and videos with your smartphone and post them to the Paris Main Street Program Facebook Page. The Scavenger Hunt will start at 9 AM and last until 7 PM that night. 2 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE: 701 High Street The construction of the Library renovation/addition has now transitioned from the demolishing phase to the building phase. For the last few months our construction crews have torn down two houses as well as the 1988 addition on the back of the original Carnegie Library. They have also leveled the ground to prepare for the 9,000 square foot addition. Most recently the crews have poured the footings for the addition showing the general dimensions and layout of the building. They have also drilled wells for geothermal heating and cooling which will help save in energy costs over time. In the next 30 days expect to see windows in the lower level of the original 1904 library. Those windows were covered by cement in a previous renovation and are being reopened to let in natural light. Crews will also be working to fix any fire damage left in the roof area. We believe that at least half of the internal roof s structure may need to be replaced along with the existing roof shingles, says ParisBourbon County Library Director Mark Adler. Soda washing and blasting has been done in order to remove soot and odor. Adler says that the Library is still waiting for final confirmation from engineers and the insurance companies for a full determination of the scope of work needed. There may need to be some time adjustment on when the project is expected to be completed. However, for now, construction and renovation are expected to be finished sometime in mid-september of next year. 3 Library to Introduce Critically Acclaimed Author Silas House to Local Schools New York Times bestselling Kentucky author Silas House will be visiting area schools on Wednesday, October 22, to By: Teen Librarian, Beth Dunston Eli the Good author, Silas House discuss his young adult novel Eli the Good. Earlier this year, the Paris-Bourbon County Library distributed over 1,000 copies of Eli the Good to area students to read before House s visit. Students who read the novel will have the opportunity to ask House questions about his work and his development as a writer. In addition to the school visits, patrons of PBCL are invited to join us for a reception at the library on 716 Main Street at 4:00 PM to celebrate Silas s visit to our community. Don t miss this chance to meet the author and buy a signed copy of one of his books! The funds for Silas House s visit and the distribution of his novel are provided by a donation from the AT&T Corporation awarded to the library last year. The donated funds are being used to encourage literacy and an interest in family history in our community s students. Students will be asked to write a story from their family s history, which will be shared on PBCL s Bourbon County Digital Library, located at This project, dubbed My Kentucky Story, is inspired by Eli the Good, in which ten-year-old Eli Book learns family secrets that turn his world upside down and bring his family closer together. While Eli uses more surreptitious methods, such as eavesdropping, to learn information about his family, we will be encouraging the use of genealogical tools such as Ancestry and Heritage Quest, available at the public library, and formal interviews with family members. Our hope is to inspire interest in the Paris community s history in students who have grown up with forward-looking technology. Silas House is the author of several bestselling novels about the Southern Appalachian region, including Clay s Quilt, A Parchment of Leaves, and The Coal Tattoo. He serves as the National Endowment for Humanities Chair of Appalachian Studies at Berea College and also serves as a faculty member at Spalding University s Creative Writing Masters of Fine Arts program. His work has attracted renewed attention to Kentucky s literary and cultural scene and we want to thank AT&T for sponsoring his visit to our community. National Banned Books Week is Last Week of September During the last week of September each year, libraries recognize Banned Books Week. This year that week falls between September The Paris-Bourbon County Library will have displays of popular banned books throughout the week. We will also be hosting a Banned Books Week Read-out Saturday, September 27, 1-3 PM at the Library. Celebrate your freedom to read by reading a selection from a book that has been banned or challenged in the past. Be sure to register your selection at the front desk so we can be sure to have a wide variety of books represented. This will be an all-ages event, so no one is too young or too old to support their favorite challenged book! The Banned Books Week is a national event sponsored by the American Library Association to raise awareness on the banning and challenging of books in classrooms, schools, and libraries across the country and the world. Be ready to show why your favorite banned book is well worth a read!
