2 Do you keep hearing about 3D printing but don t know what it is? Have you seen the videos about printed prosthetics, toys, and other fantastic creations? Are you hoping to use this technology in your business or pursue it as a hobby? Are you already a 3D printing enthusiast? Are you just interested in learning about something amazing and new? The Penticton Public Library is currently developing a new series of programs and services surrounding this very topic. The Library acquired its first 3D printer this January, the Lulzbot TAZ 6 Desktop 3D Printer, under the direction of our Systems Librarian, Dan Lerch. Since then we ve been printing (and learning about) all sorts of fun and useful things. The first informational program we will offer for this technology is on Friday, March 16th as part of our Learning at Lunch series for adults. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements as we introduce this technology into future library services and programs. If you re interested in learning more, we re expanding our collection of materials on 3D printing. You can search for them on our online catalogue, or ask at the information desk. A special note: This initiative has been made possible in part by a generous grant from the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan Similkameen (CFSOS).

3 From the desk of. Being a Chief Librarian in a public library is a bit like being a wizard in the world of Harry Potter. Arithmancy helps get the most out of our budget, and Flying Lessons are absolutely necessary when we have to be in five places at once. We use Divination and Muggle Studies to figure out the best way to serve our communities for the future. On less magical days, we sometimes want to Transfigure the misbehaving computers into toads, but even on those days, we always try to Charm our patrons with free services and programs as often as we can. Heather Buzzell, MLIS Chief Librarian On the topic of the best way to serve our patrons, I d also like to share one of the future upgrades to look out for at the library: During late March and into the beginning of April, we will be implementing a new online catalogue for the public called Enterprise. What does this mean for you, a patron? The appearance of the catalogue will change (colours, button locations) All of the search functions will remain (title, author, etc) & more will be added in order to help you search and get back better results You will be able to create and save reading lists for yourself And if you have any questions, don t worry Library Staff will be more than happy to help you navigate this change! Dirty Book Sales Looking for more ways to support your local library? We have book sales several times a year! We sell: books, audiobooks, magazines, DVDs, & CDs! Already have too many books? We accept used book donations. Most of the books that do not make it onto our shelves are sold during the book sales. These funds are used to buy new books to keep our collection current. We also have books for sale all year in the library!

Participation encouraged. 3-5 years Wednesdays, Mar 7 - Apr 25 10:00-10:30 am Children s Library Open to ages 5-12 PREHISTORIC Do your best cave person stomp on the way to the library for our first Spring Break Afterschool program! 5 FABULOUS FAMILY MOVIES Drop-in at the library and join us for our Fabulous Family Movies! While these movies are chosen to be family friendly, please be advised that there may be some scenes in them that could frighten young children. All ages 2:00 pm start Thursday, March 22 Captain Underpants (90 mins) LEGO CLUB PLUS! We re excited to announce that, with funding from the Kootenay Library Federation, we were able to purchase Qubits for our Lego Club! Qubits are construction blocks that snap together to create structures. They teach design and engineering basics, and also allow a younger crowd to practice colour sorting and shape recognition. Ages 5 plus** Wednesdays, 3:30-4:30 pm March 7, 21, 28 April 4, 18 May 2, 16 Children s Library **Children 7 and under must have an adult accompanying them. **Children 8 and over must know a parent/guardian phone number. Friday, March 2 3:30-5:00 pm CODING GAMES IN SCRATCH We ll be coding one of two games with the Scratch programming languages as well as creating your very own custom controller! Saturday, April 14 6:00-8:00 pm YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEE (YAC) The YAC is a group of awesome teen volunteers who meet once a month to plan teen events, give feedback about teen services, and help the library order new things for our collection! Teens can receive credit for volunteer hours at their schools. If you re interested in volunteering, talk to Lara at the library or drop in at our meetings! Drop by the information desk and let us know what book, audiobook, or DVD you re looking for. We can try to borrow it from another library in BC. 12 AUTHOR VISIT: BRUCE FRASER TEEN TECH WEEK: POP-UP MAKER LAB Author Bruce Fraser, who just turned eighty in August, won silver in the 2010 elit Book Awards and has won awards for his short stories. The Founding President of Access Pro Bono, Fraser practiced as a trial lawyer in the Interior of British Columbia and Vancouver through his 45-year career, representing First Nations peoples in Aboriginal Rights cases, as well as civil and criminal proceedings. He currently maintains a residence at Lac La Hache. Noah s Raven is Fraser s third novel exploring the mysteries of the vast canvas of the rugged Chilcotin region. The recent damage to the region from wildfires spurred the donation of 10% of profits and author royalties from the book to wildlife recovery and preparedness programs. Monday, March 5 2:00-3:00 pm You ve heard about the new technology we ve been lucky enough to get funding for and the programs that have been offered to our tweens now it s time to give our teens a chance to explore and experiment! Drop in, munch on free pizza and snacks and then go wild testing out our Makey Makeys, chromebooks and coding, Sphero SPRK+, and other gadgets! We ll also have a quick demonstration on 3D printing from our Systems Librarian! Friday, March 9 (in place of monthly YAC meeting) 3:15-5:00 Teens ages TO THE RACES: SPHERO SPRK+ CHARIOTS! You ve heard of the Sphero SPRK+ educational and programmable robots, sure, but did you know that you can turn them into a chariot?! Working in teams of three, tweens will create a chariot for their Sphero to pull and test their designs with weight and speed challenges! Registration will be required for this program, maximum of 18 tweens. Parents are welcome to observe! Registration opens Wednesday, March 14 at 10:00 am.
